BACKGROUND AND PURPOSEExposure to an ototoxic level of an aminoglycoside can result in hearing loss. In this we study investigated the otoprotective efficacy of dexamethasone (DXM), melatonin (MLT) and tacrolimus (TCR) in gentamicin (GM)-treated animals and cultures.EXPERIMENTAL APPROACHWistar rats were divided into controls (treated with saline); exposed to GM only (GM); and three GM-exposed groups treated with either DXM, MLT or TCR. The use of composites based on fibre-reinforced polymers (FRPs) to strengthen masonry columns has become a common practice in the last decades. FRPs, however, exhibit some shortcomings when applied to masonry substrates, due to the organic nature of their matrix. For this reason, increasing attention is paid today to composites based on fibre-reinforced cementitious matrices (FRCMs), in which the polymeric matrix is replaced with an inorganic matrix (such as cementitious mortars). A 55-year-old chemical laboratory technician developed mydriasis and ocular hypertension, which lasted for 6 weeks, after synthesizing several kilograms of a scopolamine-related test agent with anticholinergic action and then decanting a powdery intermediary substance, the dust of which he may have inhaled. Six weeks later he suddenly had symptoms of an acute intoxication while synthesizing a scopolamine-related substance. The anticholinergic delirium regressed completely within one day requiring no treatment. But subsequently he developed symptoms of a toxic encephalopathy. The advent of internationally standardized serological diagnosis for recent infection has allowed comparison of age-specific pertussis infection among European countries and was applied in Australia at the time of a major national epidemic.
