Landscape Dynamics and Cultural Contacts in the Territory of Himera in the Archaic Period

2022

In central-northern Sicily, the watershed area between the northern and southern Imera and Platani rivers has already been recognized for years as a pivotal area in relations between the different areas of the island, both in reference to the political and economic projections of the colonial poleis , especially between Himera, Akragas, both in reference to economic relations and cultural contacts with indigenous communities. This area is very crucial context of encounter and confrontation between communities, in which complex systems of territorial articulation can be grasped. The position of the settlements along the basins of the two Himera highlights a close connection in terms of inter…

Selecting a small run-of-river hydropower plan by the analytic hierarchy process (AHP): A case study of Miño-Sil river basin, Spain

2015

Hydroelectric power is obtained by harnessing the potential energy of a mass of water flowing along a river bed to convert it first into mechanical and then into electrical energy. The system is therefore both clean and autonomous and has a high potential for development. A small hydropower plant has an installed power capacity of below 10 MW and is considered run-of-river when it diverts part of a river flow to generate its electricity. The use of multicriteria techniques in environmental decision making, including selecting between various alternatives, is important when it involves complex decisions in a number of disciplinary fields. The most widely used of these techniques is the analy…

‘Landscape of exception’: Power inequalities and ethical planning challenges in the landscape transformation of south-eastern Sicily

2021

In some marginal contexts of Southern Italy, in light of specific economic, political and social conditions, certain relationships between ‘strong powers’ and ‘weak powers’ produce a suspension of norms/rights that is, paradoxically, ‘normalised’. This creates a particular spatial variation of Agamben’s (2005) state of exception concept: the ‘landscape of exception’. With respect to the possible conditions of ‘exception’, this article describes the ‘landscape of exception’ of the greenhouse system in South-Eastern Sicily. This ‘landscape of exception’ is generated by the greenhouses, in particular those dedicated to vegetable production, through an effective mechanism of spatial manipulati…

Conflictividad social en torno a los azudes del Júcar a finales del siglo XVI. Un problema recurrente por la gestión del agua

2015

[EN] The uses of water resources of the river Júcar have been a recurring element of conflict throughout the history that, at some times, deepened. This is what happened between the late sixteenth century and early seventeenth centuries, coinciding with climatic variations derived from the Little Ice Age. The building of dams, specks and other structures to slow the free flow of the river produced a clash of interests in different aspects such as economic, political or jurisdictional between the different towns of the area of the Ribera del Júcar (Carcaixent versus Alzira, Alzira versus Sueca…) channelled largely through the courts of the kingdom. This paper seeks to analyse these disputes …

Instituciones y conflicto en el franquismo La reticencia de los regantes a la integración en los sindicatos (1944-1957)

2015

[EN] Franco's policy of integrating all existing labour organisations in the Spanish Trade Union Organisation found many obstacles in its path. Some agricultural institutions such as irrigation ones, dangerously resisted to the incorporation into guilds of the field. Defending its own independence changed from isolated reaction to a common strategy that in the fifties led to the creation of a National Federation of Irrigators Communities. Playing with the ambiguity of the regime and loyalty to Franco, the attempt of incorporation faced political and economic national syndicalism’s interests with those from traditional irrigation institutions. The institutional struggle for control of territ…

Il muro di Padova: un muro di solida paura

2009

Il muro di Padova: un muro di solida paura - The Padua Wall: a Wall of Solid Fear, If there is a lucky relevance in the concept of liquid fear, it is the physical image of what, not having a solid content, slides over, trickles through chinks and floods any surface that comes across. If applied to a specific case, the concept materialises in its solid ambivalence. In the Padua case under examination, the municipality makes the choice, explosive from a communication perspective, to par8 tially isolate - with an iron fence, the so-called wall - an inhabited area, considered out of control because of the growing flow of regular and irregular immigrants, of crime episodes, of drug dealing, of a…

BIOCHARS IN SOILS: TOWARDS THE REQUIRED LEVEL OF SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING

2017

The special issue on Biochar as an Option for Sustainable Resource Management Key priorities in biochar research for future guidance of sustainable policy development have been identified by expert assessment within the COST Action TD1107. The current level of scientific understanding (LOSU) regarding the consequences of biochar application to soil were explored. Five broad thematic areas of biochar research were addressed: soil biodiversity and ecotoxicology, soil organic matter and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, soil physical properties, nutrient cycles and crop production, and soil remediation. The highest future research priorities regarding biochar’s effects in soils were: functional …
