A preliminary study of hardness and modulus of elasticity in sheep mandibles submitted to distraction osteogenesis and low-level laser therapy

Objectives: To investigate the quality of newly formed bone in sheep mandibles submitted to distraction osteogenesis and low-level laser therapy (LLLT), based on hardness and modulus of elasticity values. The ideal moment for laser application (during the latency/activation period vs. during the bone consolidation period) was also evaluated. Computed tomography imaging was used to assess relapse as a result of early device removal. Low-level laser therapy in patients with Burning Mouth Syndrome : a double-blind, randomized, controlled clinical trial

Background Evaluate the effect of LLLT in the treatment of burning mouth syndrome (BMS). Material and methods Twenty-one BMS patients were randomly assigned to two groups: 12 in the laser group (LG) and 9 in the control group (CG). Patients in the LG underwent 2-week sessions of LLLT for 4 weeks. The spot tip area of this tool is 0.088cm2, semi-conductor GaAlAs, with a wavelength of 808nm ±5nm (infrared), 200 mW output power, 1.97W/cm2 of power density, 3 J energy per point and application time 15 seconds per point. Transoral laser microsurgery for glottic cancer in the elderly: Efficacy and safety

Background Data about the results of transoral laser microsurgery (TLM) in elderly patients are limited. Methods A retrospective study of 72 consecutive cases of glottic carcinoma (63 pT1 and 9 pT2 cases) in elderly patients (≥70 years old, mean 76 years) treated with TLM was made. A systematic review of the literature was performed. Results Six patients (8%) had postoperative complications, but no treatment-related deaths were observed. Local recurrences occurred in 12 patients (16.5%): nine with pT1 (14%) and three with pT2 (33%) tumors. Transoral laryngeal microsurgery for early-stage laryngeal basaloid squamous cell carcinoma

A 71-year-old man presented to our otolaryngology clinic with dysphagia and dyspnoea. He had a history of smoking for 40 years. Laryngoscopy showed an exophytic, round mass on the left aryepiglottic fold that was entirely excised by transoral laser CO2 microsurgery. Histological assessment revealed a pT1 basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC) with free-margin resection. He underwent close follow-up and after 3-year follow-up, the patient was free from disease. Laryngeal BSCC is a rare cancer with poor prognosis due to its late diagnosis and early neck node metastases. A comparative study was undertaken to investigate the application of a specially adapted microsurgical Neodymium Yag Laser system with a wavelength of 1,319 microns and a CO2 laser system for laser assisted microvascular end-to-end anastomosis (LAMA) of the rat femoral artery. Conventionally sutured anastomoses served as controls. Postoperative investigations included patency tests, light microscopy and tensile strength measurements. Background To compare the analgesic effect of anesthetic infiltration of lidocaine 2% and low-level laser therapy (LLLT) by GaAlAs into tender points of patients with orofacial pain and fibromyalgia (FM).
