Abstract Introduction The expression of diverse resistance mechanisms in cancer cells is one of the major barriers to successful cancer chemotherapy. Methods In the present study, we assessed the cytotoxicity of two naturally occurring flavonoids dorsmanin F ( 1 , a flavanone) and poinsettifolin B ( 2 , a chalcone) against 9 drug-sensitive and multidrug-resistant (MDR) cancer cell lines. The resazurin reduction assay was used to evaluate the cytotoxicity of these compounds, whilst caspase-Glo assay was used to detect caspase activation. Abstract Most infections with respiratory viruses induce Th1 responses characterized by the generation of Th1 and CD8+ T cells secreting IFN-γ, which in turn have been shown to inhibit the development of Th2 cells. Therefore, it could be expected that respiratory viral infections mediate protection against asthma. However, the opposite seems to be true, because viral infections are often associated with the exacerbation of asthma. Abstract Spike lavender (Lavandula latifolia) is an aromatic shrub cultivated worldwide for the production of essential oils. The major constituents of these oils are monoterpenes, which are obtained from isopentenyl diphosphate and dimethylallyl diphosphate precursors through the plastidial methylerythritol phosphate (MEP) pathway and/or the cytosolic mevalonate pathway. 1-Deoxy-d-xylulose-5-P synthase (DXS) catalyzes the first step of the MEP pathway. Modulation of the growth and metabolic response of cyanobacteria by the multifaceted activity of naringenin

The interactions between the plant-derived bioflavonoid, naringenin, and prokaryotic microalgae representatives (cyanobacteria), were investigated with respect to its influence on the growth and metabolic response of these microorganisms. To achieve reliable results, the growth of cyanobacteria was determined based on measurements of chlorophyll content, morphological changes were assessed through microscopic observations, and the chemical response of cells was determined using liquid and gas chromatography (HPLC; GC-FID). Spike lavender (Lavandula latifolia) essential oil is widely used in the perfume, cosmetic, flavouring and pharmaceutical industries. Thus, modifications of yield and composition of this essential oil by genetic engineering should have important scientific and commercial applications. We generated transgenic spike lavender plants expressing the Arabidopsis thaliana HMG1 cDNA, encoding the catalytic domain of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl CoA reductase (HMGR1S), a key enzyme of the mevalonic acid (MVA) pathway. The Quaternary alkali-basaltic volcanic field of the West Eifel is the classic maar region of the world. Related to the formation of the continental rift zone which extends through Central Europe, ultrabasic magmas rose from the upper mantle through the continental crust and fed 240 small volcanoes. Next to scoria cones with their lava flows, maars are most frequent and represent 25% of the volcanoes. Geochemistry and origin of ultramafic enclaves and their basanitic host rock from Kula Volcano, Turkey

Abstract The Quaternary Kula Volcanic Province is located in western Anatolia, Turkey. This Na-alkaline anorogenic volcanism includes exposures of around 80 cinder cones, lava flows, and tuffs, representing one of the youngest volcanic activities in this region (1.9–0.026 Ma). The magmatism is related to an extensional regime and is interpreted as being derived predominantly from the asthenospheric mantle. The lava flows are mostly of a basanitic composition and host rare comagmatic enclaves. The enclaves are composed of two dominant lithologies: amphibolites and clinopyroxenites with and without olivine. Amphibole is usually resorbed and replaced by a rhoenite-rich breakdown corona. ANTIPROLIFERATIVE ACTIVITY OF CITRUS JUICES AND HPLC EVALUATION OF THEIR FLAVONOID COMPOSITION

The antiproliferative activity of fresh fruit juices extracted from Citrus sinensis (cv. Washington Navel and cv. Sanguinello), C. deliciosa cv. Avana, C. clementina cv. Nules, C. aurantium subsp. myrtifolia , was evaluated against K562 (human chronic myelogenous leukemia), HL-60 (human leukemia) and MCF-7 (human breast adenocarcinoma) cell lines. All the juices tested showed antiproliferative activity. Moreover, the pattern of the main flavanone compounds in the juices has been determined by HPLC analysis.
