Indoor air pollutants may cause inflammatory changes of the airways and adjacent pulmonary tissue. After phagocytosis of inhaled particles alveolar macrophages (AM) release chemotactic mediators capable of attracting inflammatory cells into the lung tissue. Current concepts of the immunopathogenesis of sarcoidosis favor a central role of activated, interleukin-2 (IL-2) producing helper T-cells at sites of inflammation. Normally, activated T-cells release IL-2 and express IL-2 receptors (IL-2R). IL-2R+ cells, however, are not uniformly found in patients with clinically active disease. Pleuropulmonary changes induced by ergoline drugs.

Classic ergolines, such as bromocriptine, methysergide and ergotamine, can induce chronic pleuropneumonitis. We present the cases of eight patients who developed similar changes whilst on other ergolines. In this retrospective case study spanning 1985-1995, clinical data, radiological material, pulmonary function, bronchoalveolar lavage and histopathology were reviewed. Earlier literature on ergoline-induced pleuropulmonary changes was reviewed. Oral N-acetylcysteine attenuates the rat pulmonary inflammatory response to antigen.

Oxidative stress is involved in the pathophysiology of inflammatory airway diseases including asthma; therefore, antioxidants might be of clinical benefit in asthma treatment. In the present study, the effects of N-acetylcysteine on sensitised brown Norway rats were examined. N-Acetylcysteine (3 mmol kg body weight(-1) administered orally) was given daily for 1 week before challenge and various antigen-induced pulmonary responses were studied. Diagnosis of a Case of Lipoid Pneumonia by Bronchoalveolar Lavage

Exogenous lipoid pneumonia (ELP) was diagnosed by bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) in a 57-year-old woman with a long history of using oily nose drops. Since clinical and roentgenological presentations are nonspecific, BAL, along with specific staining of recovered alveolar macrophages, represents a safe alternative to more invasive diagnostic procedures whenever a diagnosis of ELP is suspected.

Amiodarone pulmonary toxicity

The amount of literature on amiodarone pulmonary toxicity (APT) peaked in 1983-1984 with several hundred cases reported cumulatively, and declined thereafter. Since the mid-1990s, publications have increased, which suggests that APT remains a current problem in clinical practice. Amiodarone remains difficult to diagnose noninvasively, and although the outcome is good in the majority of patients, not all cases of APT can be controlled satisfactorily.

Objectives: To determine the contribution of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) in the diagnostic workup of patients suspected of having Am pneumonitis. Divergent effects of biolistic gene transfer in a mouse model of allergic airway inflammation.

Particle-mediated epidermal delivery (PMED) of allergen genes efficiently prevents systemic sensitization and suppresses specific immunoglobulin E synthesis.
