Sonography versus peritoneal lavage in blunt abdominal trauma.

1989

The reliability of sonography and peritoneal lavage in assessing the need for immediate surgical intervention in blunt abdominal trauma was examined in a prospective study (n = 71). Statistical analysis revealed a sensitivity of 100% for peritoneal lavage compared to 84% for sonography; the accuracy was 99% versus 86%, the predictive value 97% vs. 89%. The statistical difference was significant (p less than 0.05). The results demonstrate that sonography cannot replace peritoneal lavage in the diagnosis of blunt abdominal trauma. The discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of both methods shows that sonography and peritoneal lavage are not competing, but rather, are complementary exam…

A Chain of Voices: A "Masters and Slaves" Narrative

2022

Because no less than thirty different narrators take turns to tell us the story of a slave revolt, A Chain of Voices can be read as Brink's attempt at revisiting the classical "slave narrative", turning it into a polyphonic "masters and slaves" narrative in which everyone is given a say. This article examines how this polyphonic, and even multifocal, mode of narration enables Brink to write back to both classical slave narratives and to their twentieth-century counterparts, the neo-slave narratives. What it suggests is that although A Chain of Voices bears many resemblances to neo-slave narratives in terms of form, especially because of its recourse to polyphony, it is also extremely close …

Fonti, suggestioni e intersezioni classiche, tardoantiche e medievali nell’«Alda» di Guglielmo di Blois

2019

This essay is founded on the classical, late and medieval s…

Regulation of IgE production and airway reactivity by CD4(-)CD8(-) regulatory T cells

2015

The mechanisms of tolerance induction occurring in the course of allergen-specific immunotherapy have not been elucidated in full detail. Our study aimed to characterize high zone tolerance in mouse models of type I allergy and of allergic airway inflammation induced by subcutaneous sensitization of mice with high doses of the model allergen ovalbumin (OVA) without the use of adjuvant. Mice were immunized by subcutaneous injection of high doses (HD) of OVA or, for comparison, low doses (LD) of OVA in saline. HD-mice showed lower specific IgE, but augmented IgG in sera than LD-mice. Pre-treatment of mice with HD-OVA antigen-specifically inhibited IgE production subsequently induced by LD-OVA…

Mast Cells Induce Migration of Dendritic Cells in a Murine Model of Acute Allergic Airway Disease

2009

Background: The migration of dendritic cells (DCs) from the lungs to the regional lymph nodes is necessary for the development of allergic airway disease. Following activation, mast cells release a variety of stored or de novo-produced inflammatory mediators, several of them being capable of activating DCs. In this study, the role of mast cells on DC migration from the lungs to the thoracic lymph nodes was investigated in sensitized mice. Methods: Mast cell-deficient mice (KitW-sh/W-sh) and their wild-type counterparts were sensitized intraperitoneally with ovalbumine (OVA) in saline and challenged by a single intranasal administr…

Dual role of interleukin-1alpha in delayed-type hypersensitivity and airway hyperresponsiveness.

2009

Background: Using a T helper (Th)1/Th2 disease model, we previously showed that genetically determined Th development depends on dendritic cell-derived interleukin (IL)-1α. In Leishmania major infections, Th1 immunity develops if IL-1α is present during T cell priming, whereas at later time points, IL-1α worsens disease outcome. In the present study, we determined the role of IL-1α in other Th2-mediated diseases. Methods: BALB/c mice were subjected to delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) or ovalbumin (OVA)/alum-induced allergic asthma in the presence or absence of IL-1α. Results: In DTH, mice treated with IL-1α durin…

Identification of fish species by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode-array detection

1998

A method for the separation of sarcoplasmic fish proteins by RP-HPLC is described. The procedure revealed significant differences useful for reliable identification of fish species. Sixteen of the most common Finnish freshwater fish species were differentiated by species-specific HPLC chromatograms obtained using photodiode-array detection (PAD) at 200-350 nm. The analytical column was a Hi-Pore RP-304 reversed-phase column. The separation was performed by a linear gradient of acetonitrile and water with a small amount of trifluoracetic acid (TFA). Star-symbol plots were constructed from the chromatograms to visualize the data. Clearly different HPLC protein profiles for most fish species w…

Latvijas juridiskajā literatūrā trūkst plaši skaidrojumi par neslavas celšanas problēmjautājumiem, it īpaši elektroniskā vidē. Darba galvenā būtība ir izpētīt neslavas celšanas institūta būtību, aplūkojot teoriju, tiesu praksi, kā …

Bioactivity of essential oils in phytopathogenic and post-harvest fungi control

2017

[EN] Commercial thyme and lavender essential oils were analysed by GC/MS. Sixty-six compounds accounting for 98.6¿99.6% of total essential oil were identified. Thymol (52.14 ± 0.21%), followed by pcymene (32.24 ± 0.16%), carvacrol (3.71 ± 0.01%) and ¿-terpinene (3.34 ± 0.02%), were the main compounds in thyme essential oil, while large amounts of oxygenated monoterpenes linalool acetate (37.07 ± 0.24%) and linalool (30.16 ± 0.06%) were found in lavender one. In vitro antifungal activity of the essential oils was evaluated at 200 and 300 ¿g/mL against 10 phytopathogenic and post-harvest fungi, which significantly affect agriculture. Micelial growth inhibition was calculated for each tested f…
