Elucidating the electron transport in semiconductors via Monte Carlo simulations: An inquiry-driven learning path for engineering undergraduates

2015

Within the context of higher education for science or engineering undergraduates, we present an inquiry-driven learning path aimed at developing a more meaningful conceptual understanding of the electron dynamics in semiconductors in the presence of applied electric fields. The electron transport in a nondegenerate n-type indium phosphide bulk semiconductor is modelled using a multivalley Monte Carlo approach. The main characteristics of the electron dynamics are explored under different values of the driving electric field, lattice temperature and impurity density. Simulation results are presented by following a question-driven path of exploration, starting from the validation of the model…

Destination Governance at Stake: Fostering Policy Coordination Among Decision-Makers of a Small Town

2018

This research aims to foster small-town decision-makers’ awareness of policy coordination as a central issue in either implementing collaborative governance and designing tourism development policies. To this end, a System Dynamics-based Interactive Learning Environment (ILE) has been designed with the intent of challenging decision-makers to increase tourism in the small town, while managing trade-offs among individualistic vs. collaborative behaviour. The action research took place in Castelbuono, a small tourism destination in Sicily (Italy). Three major decision-makers were involved: the mayor of the town, the museum’s director, and a restaurant owner. The use of the ILE has enabled dec…

Ecologies of Practice

2018

Through current research evidence, anecdotal experiences portrayed in the research to praxis sections and country-specific images of practice, we hope the chapters of this book have highlighted the tremendous potential and power of the adolescent developmental period. Education systems, schools and teachers all play important roles in how the schooling experience of adolescents unfolds. Since such a significant portion of their sense of self develops through their interactions and explorations with people and ideas at school, we can no longer leave to chance what happens during the middle years of learning. Bringing the science and research of adolescence and adolescent schooling to life th…

A Hybrid Model for an E-learning System Which Develops Metacognitive Skills at Students

2013

One of the goals of academic education is to train students in view of acquiring metacognitive skills, thus becoming self-regulated learners prepared for for lifelong learning. The research in this area has proved that metacognition can be taught and learned and that self-regulation behavior can be guided and constrained by the features of the learning environment. In order to become an educational environment, attractive and at the same time efficient for the students and which would enable students to develop their metacognitive skills, the e-learning system needs continuous improvments. This paper presents a hybrid model of an e-learning system, MEM - Metacognitive E-learning system Mode…

Sunny Island. An Interactive Learning Environment to Promote Systems Thinking Education for Primary School Students

2017

To make the process of learning easier for students, schoolteachers are increasingly using Interactive Learning Environments (ILEs) in classrooms. The paper presents a system dynamics-based ILE called Sunny Island. The ILE has been designed to promote Systems Thinking (ST) education for primary school students. Through a funny fantasy tale - described in detail in a book that accompanies the ILE - students have the opportunity to discover and become familiar with the basic principles of ST, such as feedback, positive and negative causal influences, limits to growth, short and long term effects, counterintuitive behaviors, causes of policy resistances and dynamic complexity. The proposed ILE…

Intelligent learning environment for better student’s academic performance

2021

In this paper, the authors aim to develop an intelligent learning environment model designed to improve students’ academic performance. Methodology: Referring to the litarature, the authors identified and analyzed a number of relevant issues that influence the specific components of an intelligent learning environment. These aspects were quantified using performance indicators defined on the basis of the specific objectives of each aspect chosen. Results: Following the analysis, the authors developed a model of intelligent learning space, and for its representation, we used conceptual modeling. Conclusions: Finally, the authors propose the prevalidation of the model using the dynamic modeli…

Dealing with abnormal business growth by leveraging local area common goods: an outside-in stakeholder collaboration perspective

2020

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to illustrate how for a business located in a local area that does not portray the characteristics of the “Silicon Valley” stereotype, developing a strategy that pretends to autonomously set its boundary spanning may lead to unsustainable growth.Design/methodology/approachThis work suggests Dynamic Performance Management (DPM) as a method to implement an outcome-based view of sustainable development of small- and micro-sized organizations in their own context. A case study shows how collaboration between the public and the business sector may improve local area's outcomes and develop common goods in the context.FindingsAmong the “abnormally-grown” small-a…

Student outcomes in Philippine elementary schools: An evaluation of four experiments

1999

International audience; Policymakers in most developing countries are concerned about high dropout rates and poor student learning in primary education. The government of the Philippines initiated the Dropout Intervention Program in 1990-92 as part of its effort to address these issues. Under this program, four experimental interventions were randomly assigned to 20 schools in selected low-income areas. Pre- and post-intervention data were collected from these schools, as well as from 10 control schools, in order to evaluate the program's impact on dropout behavior and student learning. The economic justification for replication appears to be strongest for the interventions that provided te…

Developing teachers' professional expertise through collaboration in an innovative ICT‐based learning environment

2004

Recent research emphasizes the context‐specific nature of professional knowledge and expertise, implying that developing novel practices in authentic environments is a prerequisite for teachers' professional development. The aim of this study was to find out how teachers develop their practical knowledge and expertise through shared planning and to evaluate an innovative learning project carried out in an ICT‐based environment. Two secondary school teachers of history participated in this study. The data were gathered using a multi‐methodological approach (video recordings, interviews and questionnaires). The results are described in terms of the teachers' shared experiences and their incre…
