CONTEMPORARY LEARNING ENVIRONMENT IN THE VOCATIONAL EDUCATION: THE NEW CHALLENGES
2013
The quantitative research basis is the data of surveys which were filled in by teachers of vocational education institutions and employers. The research is based on researches and reports regarding vocational education, strategic planning documents of development of education of Republic of Latvia and EU, studies, statistics on vocational education (data basis of the Central Statistical Bureau, statistics of the Ministry of Education and Science (MES) on vocational education) also are used. The aim of the research is to analyze factors of the internal and external environment that affect vocational education in order to determine how these factors create challenges for the vocational educat…
Constructing Knowledge through a Role-Play in a Web-Based Learning Environment
2003
This study aimed to find out how and on what level the students of two separate secondary schools shared and constructed knowledge on imperialism by interacting through historical role characters in a Web-based environment. Furthermore, the study aimed to find out how social and contextual features affected the nature of knowledge sharing and construction. The data about the history project were gathered by various means in order to validate the findings of the case study. The results demonstrated that the level of the Web-based messages remained quite low. Also the use of the Web-based environment in terms of shared knowledge construction was rather weak. In comparison, different instruct…
Collaborative Writing with Wikis: Pedagogical and Technological Implications for Successful Implementation in Teacher Education
2012
Wikis have been promoted as tools that foster collaborative learning and writing. They enable multiple users to edit a document collaboratively and support online written communication between participants. While most wiki research is based on students’ subjective perceptions of the wiki learning environment, a number of studies have drawn on the data log that is automatically generated by wikis. The data log enables the analysis of students’ activities performed on the wiki in terms of work distribution, level of contribution, types of activities, timing of contribution, and work intervals. This information is more reliable to analyze collaborative writing activities than subjective percep…
Organizational Performance Dynamics : a preliminary model
2023
The main objective of this model (an Interactive Learning Environment) is to help the reader understand how employees' motivational dynamics influence organizational performance. The model will allow you, through an iterative learning process, to understand: - the feedback structure of dynamic organizational performance system - the main motivational variables that influence the organizational performance - the organizational levers able to affect the employees' motivational dynamics The model will allow the reader to figure out the complex relationship between employee motivation and organizational performance through an "experimental" approach, using the simulation features provided by th…
Time and the Design of Web-Based Learning Environments
2005
Introduction Design can be seen as a form of creation, which involves complexity and synthesis (Goel & Pirolli, 1992; Schon, 1987). In a broad sense, anyone who designs is a designer. This means that unlike analysts or critics, designers put elements together and bring new creations into being. In so doing they deal with many variables and constraints, some initially known and some discovered through the design process (Etelapelto, 1998). According to Burgoon, Buller, and Woodall (1996), it is typically human to affect and change one's environment. However humans are affected by their physical surroundings as well. Schon (1987) perceives all human constructive and creative activity as desig…
Comparative Study of the Mobile Learning Architectures
2016
International audience; With the emergence of mobile devices (Smart Phone, PDA, UMPC, game consoles, etc.), learning is changing from electronic learning (e-Learning) to mobile learning (m-learning). In fact, due to the mobility feature, it seems that the m-learning have to be adapted with the change within the context. Several researches addressed this issue and implemented a mobile learning environment to prove its usefulness and feasibility in various domains. In this article, we conduct a comparative study between a list of mobile learning architectures and methods that are presented in the literature. The performance of these architectures is evaluated based on several criteria, such a…
Uncertainty-reducing cooperation scripts in online learning environments
2004
Online learning courses can create new interaction situations for participants who have not previously worked with each other. Initially, there is some degree of uncertainty between participants in these interaction situations. According to the uncertainty reduction theory, low uncertainty increases theamount of discourse and decreases information seeking. Thus, uncertainty may influence online discourseand learning. However, the relation of uncertainty reduction to learning outcomes has not yet been investigated systematically. Cooperation scripts may reduce uncertainty, and therefore enhance learning.A cooperation script, which aims to reduce uncertainty at a cognitive level, was chosen f…
Hyvää verkko-opetusta etsimässä: oppimista edistävät ja estävät tekijät verkko-oppimisympäristöissä – opiskelijoiden kokemuksen ja opettajien arviot
2003
Verkko-opetusta tutkittiin osana opetus-opiskelu-oppiminen prosessia (Uljens 1997, Kansanen 1999). Hyvän verkko-opettajan ominaisuuksia etsittiin tehokkaan opettajan kriteerien (Tirri 1993), opettajan pedagogisen ajattelun ja verkko-opettajatutkimuksien lähtökohdista käsin. Mielekäs oppiminen määriteltiin Jonassenin (1995) esittämien kriteerien lähtökohdista. Tutkimuksen empiirinen aineisto koostui vuosina 1995-1999 Helsingin yliopiston virtuaalisen avoimen yliopiston (HEVI) ja A…

Young Men in Digital Culture: A New Form of Informal Learning?
2012
In this chapter, the interest lies in the role of the media in young people’s and young adults’ everyday life. Of special interest is the idea of virtual environments as a learning environment, because the aspects of media, virtual realities and learning are socially important and scientifically challenging. In the analysis, three main areas are taken into consideration: First, the discussion on new learning models; second, the progress of information technology; and third, the gap between the styles of learning inside and outside the school. The study focused on young men who practically live in the online world, either playing or talking with each other via online gaming and social portal…
