We are presenting a methodological approach that aims to increase students' motivation by asking them to develop tasks based on professional settings. In order to meet this objective a collaborative methodology was designed and applied to two multidisciplinary projects: MARKETOUR and ICT-SUSTOUR. Both projects made students face real workplace situations by working collaboratively through the use of a virtual learning environment (VLE) and other information technology (IT) tools at a national and international level. Abstract In this paper we present a student module modeling knowledge states and learning skills of students in the field of Newtonian dynamics. Student data recorded during the exploratory activity in microworlds are used to infer mental representations concerning the concept of force. A fuzzy algorithm able to follow the cognitive states the student goes through in solving a task and to interpret the monitored changes is discussed.

A model of software market evolution suggests that observations on development and deployment of standards in the domain indicate the status on the market. This study aimed at addressing social and technological challenges in a computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) setting. Observations were made in the context of an online Master's degree program. A group of four students supported by online tutors and facilitators participated in the study. Interaction analysis (IA) helped reveal both successful and problematic aspects in the CSCL setting.
