Noise annoyance is associated with depression and anxiety in the general population : the contribution of aircraft noise
2015
BACKGROUND: While noise annoyance has become recognized as an important environmental stressor, its association to mental health has hardly been studied. We therefore determined the association of noise annoyance to anxiety and depression and explored the contribution of diverse environmental sources to overall noise annoyance. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We investigated cross-sectional data of n = 15.010 participants of the Gutenberg Health Study (GHS), a population-based, prospective, single-center cohort study in Mid-Germany (age 35 to 74 years). Noise annoyance was assessed separately for road traffic, aircraft, railways, industrial, neighborhood indoor and outdoor noise ("during the day"; "i…
Alcohol abuse and insomnia disorder: Focus on a group of night and day workers
2021
The sleep-wake cycle plays a fundamental role in maintaining the physiological balance of our body. Its alteration favours the genesis of several organic alterations and diseases including sleep disorders and the consumption of several substances of abuse. It has been reported that the work activity, especially that carried out during the night, is able to influence the sleep-wake cycle, promoting the development of insomnia, which, in turn, would subject the worker to a stressful condition such as to encourage adverse behaviour such as the use/abuse of psychotropic substances. Based on the above premises, the aim of our research was to evaluate, in night workers: (i) the pattern of consump…
Does exercise intensity matter for fatigue during (neo-)adjuvant cancer treatment? The Phys-Can randomized clinical trial
2021
Exercise during cancer treatment improves cancer-related fatigue (CRF), but the importance of exercise intensity for CRF is unclear. We compared the effects of high- vs low-to-moderate-intensity exercise with or without additional behavior change support (BCS) on CRF in patients undergoing (neo-)adjuvant cancer treatment. This was a multicenter, 2x2 factorial design randomized controlled trial (Clinical Trials NCT02473003) in Sweden. Participants recently diagnosed with breast (n = 457), prostate (n = 97) or colorectal (n = 23) cancer undergoing (neo-)adjuvant treatment were randomized to high intensity (n = 144), low-to-moderate intensity (n = 144), high intensity with BCS (n = 144) or low…
The association between burning mouth syndrome and sleep disturbance: A case-control multicentre study
2018
Objectives: To investigate the quality of sleep and the psychological profiles of a large cohort of Italian patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS) and to clarify the relationships between these variables and pain. Methods: In this case–control study, 200 patients with BMS vs an equal number of age- and sex-matched healthy controls, recruited in 10 universities, were enrolled. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D), Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety (HAM-A), Numeric Pain Intensity Scale (NRS) and Total Pain Rating Index (T-PRI) were administered. Descriptive statistics, including the Mann–Whitney U test and …
Nurses experience of aromatherapy use with dementia patients experiencing disturbed sleep patterns. An action research project
2013
The purpose of this study was to gain an insight into nurses' experiences of incorporating aromatherapy into the care of residents suffering from dementia, anxiety and disturbed sleep patterns. Twenty-four residents and twelve nurses from four nursing homes participated in an action research study. The use of lavender augustofolia essential oil diffused nightly was perceived as an effective care modality reducing insomnia and anxiety in this patient cohort. Nurses experienced some negative attitudes among colleagues because they considered aromatherapy as not evidence based. Nurses require greater access to evidence based use of Aromatherapy. Further research is needed to study how smell ca…
Nasal budesonide efficacy for nasal nitric oxide and nasal obstruction in rhinitis
2017
Nasal nitric oxide (nNO) is a noninvasive tool that may be helpful in evaluating the inflammatory status in the upper airways [1]. Previous studies report that nNO is elevated in children with Allergic Rhinitis (AR) [2], especially in perennial sensitized subjects [3], and that it may be affected by topical administration of intranasal steroids (INSs) [4]. Xid-defective male (CBA/N x C57BL/6)F1 accessory cells present bovine insulin to long-term cultured F1-restricted T-cells
1982
The reactivity of H-2b-restricted murine T cells towards bovine insulin was reported to depend on the expression of Ia. W39, a private specificity of I-Ab, on antigen-presenting cells. Cells of male (CBA/N X B6)F1 mice carrying the mutation xid on the X chromosome lack IA. W39 on the cell surface. These cells are unable to present bovine insulin to primed T cells derived from female (CBA/N X B6)F1 mice. We show here that spleen cells of male (CBA/N X B6)F1 hybrids served perfectly as accessory cells for the insulin-dependent induction of a proliferative response of long-term cultured T cells with (B10 X B10.BR)F1 genotype, restricted to recognizing insulin in the context of F1-unique I-A de…
Three cell subsets are required for the transfer of delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction by antigen-specific T cell lines.
1997
Antigen (trinitrochlorobenzene)-specific T cell lines were obtained by repeated stimulation of lymph node cells from immune mice with antigen in vitro. These T cell lines, consisting of more than 90% CD4+ Vbeta8.2+ and 6 to 9% gammadelta+ T lymphocytes, transfer contact sensitivity (CS) locally when injected at the same site as the challenge antigen, but fail to mediate a systemic passive transfer when injected i.v. Injection of T cell lines together with spleen cells from mice immunized 1 day beforehand (1-day cells) allowed a successful, specific systemic transfer of CS. Phenotypic analysis showed that the 1-day immune cell was alphabeta+, gammadelta-, sIg-, CD3+, CD4-, CD8-, CD5+, B220 (…
Ileal Melanoma, A Rare Cause of Small Bowel Obstruction: Report of a Case, and Short Literature Review.
2020
Background: Malignant melanoma frequently spreads to the gastrointestinal tract, with 60% of patients with advanced metastatic disease showing digestive involvement; however, primary MM of the small intestine is a controversial diagnosis. In fact, whether these lesions arise as true small bowel primary neoplasms or represent metastases from unidentified cutaneous melanomas remains debatable. The most common complications are intestinal obstruction, massive gastrointestinal bleeding, and perforation. Objective & Methods: We report a case of a 64-year-old patient, with an unremarkable medical history, in which a late diagnosis of primary ileal malignant melanoma in the setting of an emer…
