Surfactant Assisted Polymerization of Tetrafluoroethylene in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide with a Pilot Scale Batch Reactor.

2008

Chain-free radical polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) was carried out in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2), at 50 °C and 121–133 bar, with tertiary-amyl-per-pivalate as a free radical initiator, using a 5-L pilot scale batch reactor. Experiments were carried out both in the absence and in the presence of perfluoropolyether (PFPE) carboxylate surfactants. Stabilizers were employed under the free acid form and as sodium and calcium salts. An expanded fibrillated poly(TFE) was obtained in all experiments. In the case of surfactant-free polymerizations, the product was mainly constituted by irregular shape macroparticles having size in the range 200–500 μm. Quite interestingly, when…

Impact of the reaction pathway on the final product in on-surface synthesis

2020

International audience; On-surface synthesis provides a very promising strategy for creating stable functional structures on surfaces. In the past, classical reactions known from solution synthesis have been successfully transferred onto a surface. Due to the presence of the surface, on-surface synthesis provides the potential of directing the reaction pathway in a manner that might not be accessible in classical solution synthesis. In this work, we present evidence for an acetylene polymerization from a terminal alkyne monomer deposited onto calcite (10.4). Strikingly, although the dimer forms on the surface as well, we find no indication for diacetylene polymerization. This is in sharp co…

Impact of surface state on polyethylene glycol conformation confined inside a nanopore.

2021

Solid-state nanopores are a promising platform for characterizing proteins. In order to improve their lifetime and prevent fouling, Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) grafting is one of the most efficient and low-cost solutions. Different models to calculate the PEG thickness do not consider their interaction with the nanopore inner surface nor the effect of confinement. Here, we investigate by molecular dynamic simulation the PEG conformation inside a nanopore in the case of hydrophobic and hydrophilic nanopores. Our results reveal that the nanopore inner surface plays a role in the PEG organization and, thus, in the speed of the salt constituent. The resulting pair interaction between PEG and its …

Sustainable nanocomposites based on halloysite nanotubes and pectin/polyethylene glycol blend

2013

Abstract This study was focused on the preparation and characterization of biofilms based on pectin/polyethylene glycol 20000 (PEG) blend and halloysite nanotubes (HNTs). The obtained blends loaded with a natural nanoclay are proposed as sustainable alternative to the polymers produced from non-renewable resources such as fossil fuels. Properties of technological interest have been monitored and they were correlated to the structural features of the nanocomposites. It turned out that the wettability of the films can be tuned by changing the composition and the distribution of HNTs into the material as well as the surface roughness. The tensile properties of the blend are enhanced by the pre…

Analysis of odour and taste problems in high-density polyethene

1998

Abstract The compounds that cause off-flavours in plastics, have been recognized mainly as carbonyl compounds (aldehydes, ketones and esters). They occur in low concentrations, and due to their low-threshold odour concentrations, their typical odours were identified. Most of these off-flavour compounds are volatile. Chemical analysis of smelling compounds requires a very sensitive method with a high-resolution capability. The analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in high density polyethene (HD-PE) granules and waters in which the granules have been shaken for 4 h, were carried out by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry–sniffing system (GC–MS–SNIFF) and by gas chromatography–fourier…

Hetero-Multifunctional Poly(ethylene glycol) Copolymers with Multiple Hydroxyl Groups and a Single Terminal Functionality

2009

Hetero-multifunctional poly(ethylene glycol-co-glycerol) random copolymers with multiple hydroxyl functionalities and a single terminal functionality have been prepared by copolymerization of ethylene oxide (EO) and ethoxy ethyl glycidyl ether (EEGE) with the use of a suitable initiator, introducing a protected amino group or a double bond, respectively. Acidic deprotection was used for removal of the acetal protecting groups in the chain, and the terminal amino group was regenerated by catalytic hydrogenation. A series of copolymers with narrow polydispersity was obtained, varying comonomer fractions from 3 to 67% and molecular weights in the range of 5 000-32 000 g · mol(-1) (1.05 < $\ove…

Review: Solution equilibria of ternary complexes formed from copper(II), aliphatic amines, and bioligands

2014

This review provides a summary of the coordination chemistry of ligands in the ternary system: copper(II)–aliphatic amine–bioligand, where amine = ethylenediamine – En, diethylenetriamine – Dien, or N, N, N′, N″, N″-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine – Me5dien, and bioligand = selected amino acid, aminohydroxamic acid, or aminophosphonic acid, in aqueous solution. We would like to show the specific interactions of copper(II) in ternary systems in the context of complex equilibria chemistry.

1975

The formation and the behaviour of radiation induced free radicals in poly[1-(tert-butoxy carbonylthio)ethylene] (2) and in a statistical copolymer 4 from O-tert-butyl S-vinyl thiocarbonate (1) with N-vinylpyrrolidone (1:1) was studied, using ESR spectroscopy. After γ-irradiation at 77 K, tert-butyl radicals and other species were detected in the polymers. The yield for the homopolymer was evaluated to be Gtert-butyl = 0.18. Investigations on the behaviour of radicals with an annealing procedure revealed, that at first the tert-butyl radicals disappear with increasing temperature and that a further warming up leads to a concentration rise of this radical species. A radical cation localized …

Synthesis of new soluble polybenzyls by Friedel-Crafts reactions

1999

Soluble polybenzyls were prepared by a catalytic electrophilic Friedel-Crafts type polycondensation between α,α'-dichloro-p-xylene and substituted (by an alkyl or an alkoxy side-chain) mesitylene. The influence of the length of the side-chain on the solubility of the polymer was examined. The polymers were found to be soluble in common organic solvents. Polymer characterizations were made by 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), size exclusion chromatography (SEC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and elemental analysis.

Effect of small amounts of poly(lactic acid) on the recycling of poly(ethylene terephthalate) bottles

2011

Abstract Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is one of the most used commodity polymers, especially for food and beverage applications, and its recycling is of great importance because of the possible use in the textile and construction industries. On the other hand, the interest in biodegradable polymers has led, in recent years, to the use of materials such as poly(lactic acid) (PLA) also in the food and beverage industry. The presence of small amounts of PLA in the PET waste can significantly affect the post-consumer recycling process. In this work, the effect of the presence of small amounts of PLA on the recycling of PET bottles is investigated by rheological, mechanical, morphological …
