Cosmology of the Planck Era from a Renormalization Group for Quantum Gravity

Homogeneous and isotropic cosmologies of the Planck era before the classical Einstein equations become valid are studied taking quantum gravitational effects into account. The cosmological evolution equations are renormalization group improved by including the scale dependence of Newton's constant and of the cosmological constant as it is given by the flow equation of the effective average action for gravity. It is argued that the Planck regime can be treated reliably in this framework because gravity is found to become asymptotically free at short distances. Abstract The four fundamental bands of 70 GeD 4 have been analyzed using the STDS software developed in Dijon (http://www.u-bourgogne.fr/LPUB/sTDS.html). Both infrared and Raman spectra were used to observe all fundamental bands. Infrared spectra of monoisotopic 70 GeD 4 were recorded in the regions 600 and 1500 cm −1 using the Bruker 120HR interferometer at Wuppertal. The resolution (1/maximum optical path difference) was between 2.3 and 3.3×10 −3 cm −1 for the ν 3 and ν 4 infrared-active fundamental bands as well as for the interacting ν 2 band. Resolution-enhanced optical coherence tomography based on classical intensity interferometry.

We propose a fourth-order interference scheme for optical coherence tomography operating with broadband incoherent (or quasi-incoherent) light. It is shown that using this proposal, an axial resolution improvement by a factor of 2 and a better sensitivity for weakly reflecting samples are obtained than with the standard second-order correlation scheme. From a practical perspective, we suggest the use of broadband Q-switched pulses and performing ultrafast intensity correlation with a nonlinear crystal. The global performance of our proposal is illustrated by means of numerical simulations
Nonlinear stability of relativistic sheared planar jets

The linear and non-linear stability of sheared, relativistic planar jets is studied by means of linear stability analysis and numerical hydrodynamical simulations. Our results extend the previous Kelvin-Hemlholtz stability studies for relativistic, planar jets in the vortex sheet approximation performed by Perucho et al. (2004a,b) by including a shear layer between the jet and the external medium and more general perturbations. The models considered span a wide range of Lorentz factors ($2.5-20$) and internal energies ($0.08 c^2-60 c^2$) and are classified into three classes according to the main characteristics of their long-term, non-linear evolution. Physical properties of the jet in 0836+710 revealed by its transversal structure(Corrigendum)

Perucho & Lobanov (2007) (PL07, from now on) presented results demonstrating that the jet in 0836+710 has a significant velocity shear layer. These authors used a set of jet parameters found by Lobanov et al. (1998) (including Lorentz factor γ = 11, Mach number Mj = 6, and jet/ambient medium density ratio ρj/ρa = 0.04). They studied different characteristic wavelengths that may develop in a jet with both a thin ( 10% of the jet radius) and a thick shear-ayer ( 60% of the jet radius). The result showed that the observed wavelengths in the jet structure could be more easily explained in terms of a transversally stratified jet. We demonstrate a parametric interaction based on four wave mixing that can arrest the collapse and stabilize solitary propagation in a pure Kerr material by controlling the wavelength of the interacting beams.
Higher-order Kerr effect in ultrashort laser pulse propagation and laser filamentation

We discuss the contribution of the higher-order Kerr effect (HOKE) to the propagation of ultrashort laser pulses in several contexts. We show that their consideration is necessary to adequately reproduce experimental data about harmonics generation, propagation in hollow-core fibers, and laser filamentation. In the latter case, our results show that the HOKE play a key role for short pluses and/or long wavelengths, while the plasma contributes more for long pulses and/or short wavelengths.
Analysis of the imaging method for assessment of the smile of laser diode bars.

We study imaging systems designed to assess the smile of laser diode bars (LDBs). The magnification matrix is derived from the required sampling period and the geometries of the LDBs and the charge-coupled device (CCD) array. These image-forming systems present in-plane pure translation invariance, but in the case of anamorphic ones, lack in-plane rotation invariance. It is shown that the smile parameters of the image of the LDB are linked with the smile parameters of the LDB by simple mathematical expressions. A basic re-examination of the traditional dimensional analysis of microscopic and macroscopic multiphase flow equations in porous media is presented. We introduce a ‘macroscopic capillary number’\(\overline {Ca}\) which differs from the usual microscopic capillary number Ca in that it depends on length scale, type of porous medium and saturation history. The macroscopic capillary number\(\overline {Ca}\) is defined as the ratio between the macroscopic viscous pressure drop and the macroscopic capillary pressure.\(\overline {Ca}\) can be related to the microscopic capillary number Ca and the LeverettJ-function. Universal scaling for the quantum Ising chain with a classical impurity

We study finite size scaling for the magnetic observables of an impurity residing at the endpoint of an open quantum Ising chain in a transverse magnetic field, realized by locally rescaling the magnetic field by a factor $\mu \neq 1$. In the homogeneous chain limit at $\mu = 1$, we find the expected finite size scaling for the longitudinal impurity magnetization, with no specific scaling for the transverse magnetization. At variance, in the classical impurity limit, $\mu = 0$, we recover finite scaling for the longitudinal magnetization, while the transverse one basically does not scale.
