Fast Response Vibration Sensor Based on Bragg Gratings Written on Tapered Core Fibers

2006

Bragg gratings written in tapered core fibers are used to measure mechanical vibrations with a time response better than 10 μs. The system is compact, low-cost and can be wavelength multiplexed.

White light supercontinuum generation in a Y-shaped microstructured tapered fiber pumped at 1064 nm.

2010

We report the generation of supercontinuum in a Ge-doped Y-shape tapered fiber pumped at 1064 nm in the ns pump regime. The taper was designed to have long taper transitions and a taper waist with a core diameter of 0.9 mum. The large air-filling fraction and diameter of the air-hole microstructure reduces the confinement loss at long wavelengths so, enabling the extension of the spectrum to longer wavelengths. Along the taper transition the zero-dispersion wavelength decreases as the diameter of the taper becomes smaller. The spectral components generated along the taper transition pump the taper waist, enhancing the generation of short wavelengths. A flat spectrum spanning from 420 nm to …

Surface-directed spinodal decomposition in a thin-film geometry: A computer simulation

1994

The phase separation kinetics of a two-dimensional binary mixture at critical composition confined between (one-dimensional) straight walls which preferentially attract one component of the mixture is studied for a wide range of distancesD between the walls. Following earlier related work on semiinfinite systems, two choices of surface forces at the walls are considered, one corresponding to an incompletely wet state of the walls, the other to a completely wet state (forD→∞). The nonlinear Cahn-Hilliard-type equation, supplemented with appropriate boundary conditions which account for the presence of surfaces, is replaced by a discrete equivalent and integrated numerically. Starting from a …

Recognition Of Polychromatic Test By Multi-Channel Correlation Filtering

1989

A wavelength-multichannel correlation technique based on matched filtering is proposed to identify a colour object with a non uniform colour distribution. The filters are matched to the object which is illuminated with different wavelengths. This correlation gives the information of colour distribution in addition to other information usually obtained from image recognition. The theoretical study of this technique, numerical simulations and discussion are presented.

MOJAVE: Monitoring of Jets in Active Galactic Nuclei with VLBA Experiments. VI. Kinematics Analysis of a Complete Sample of Blazar Jets

2009

We discuss the jet kinematics of a complete flux-density-limited sample of 135 radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) resulting from a 13 year program to investigate the structure and evolution of parsec-scale jet phenomena. Our analysis is based on new 2 cm Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) images obtained between 2002 and 2007, but includes our previously published observations made at the same wavelength, and is supplemented by VLBA archive data. In all, we have used 2424 images spanning the years 1994-2007 to study and determine the motions of 526 separate jet features in 127 jets. The data quality and temporal coverage (a median of 15 epochs per source) of this complete AGN jet sample r…

One-bond 1 J (15 N,H) coupling constants at sp2 -hybridized nitrogen of Schiff bases, enaminones and similar compounds: A theoretical study

2020

1 J(15 N,H) coupling constants for enaminones and NH-forms of intramolecularly hydrogen-bonded Schiff bases as model compounds for sp2 -hybridized nitrogen atoms are evaluated using density functional theory (DFT) to find the optimal functionals and basis sets. Ammonia is used as a test molecule and its one-bond coupling constant is compared with experiment. A methylamine Schiff base of a truncated molecule of gossypol is used for checking the performance of selected B3LYP, O3LYP, PBE, BHandH, and APFD density functionals and standard, modified, and dedicated basis sets for coupling constants. Both in vacuum and in chloroform, modeled by the simple continuum model of solvent, the modified b…

Conditions for waveguide decoupling in square-lattice photonic crystals

2004

We study coupling and decoupling of parallel waveguides in two-dimensional square-lattice photonic crystals. We show that the waveguide coupling is prohibited at some wavelengths when there is an odd number of rows between the waveguides. In contrast, decoupling does not take place when there is even number of rows between the waveguides. Decoupling can be used to avoid cross talk between adjacent waveguides.

Aluminum Plasmonics: Fabrication and Characterization of Broadly Tunable Plasmonic Surfaces for Plasmon Molecule Strong-Coupling and Fluorescence Enh…

2018

Our work based on previous studies [1, 2] confirms, that simple aluminum nanostructures can be utilized as effective plasmonic resonators over a broad range of frequencies and wavelengths. The nanostructured surfaces, fabricated by electron-beam lithography demonstrated relatively narrow-band resonances and are suitable for various plasmonic applications ranging from metal enhanced fluorescence to strong-coupling [1, 2, 3, 4, 5] experiments. We represent data for molecule-plasmon coupling near the strong coupling limit and demonstrate that these aluminum structures do act as fluorescence increasing substrates. In this work, we used two different types of dyes. We studied the narrow band j-a…

Impact of crop species on bacterial community structure during anaerobic co-digestion of crops and cow manure

2008

The bacterial communities in three continuously stirred tank reactors co-digesting cow manure with grass silage, oat straw, and sugar beet tops, respectively, were investigated by 16S rRNA gene-based fingerprints and clone libraries. The analyses revealed both clearly distinct and similar phylotypes in the bacterial communities between the reactors. The major groups represented in the three reactors were Clostridia, unclassified Bacteria, and Bacteroidetes. Phylotypes affiliated with Bacilli or Deltaproteobacteria were unique to the sugar beet and straw reactor, respectively. Unclassified Bacteria dominated in sugar beet reactor while in the straw and grass reactor Clostridia was the domina…
