Complexation behaviour of hexadentate ligands possessing N2O4and N2O2S2cores: differential reactivity towards Co(ii), Ni(ii) and Zn(ii) salts and str…

2004

Reactions of divalent metal salts of Co, Ni and Zn with 1,2-di(salicylaldimino-o-phenylthio) ethane (H2L1) and 1,2-di(naphthaldimino-o-phenylthio) ethane (H2L2), having N2O2S2 cores, and 1,2-di(O-salicylaldimino-o-hydroxyphenyl) ethane (H2L3), having a N2O4 core, have been explored. Out of the three ligands and the nine products obtained from the corresponding reactions, two ligands and seven products were crystallographically characterized. However, all the ligands and the products were characterized by analytical and spectral methods. Reaction of H2L1 and H2L2 with Co(II) salts results in oxidative cleavage of the C-S bond to produce a Co(III) product bound to two dissimilar tridentate li…

Monodisperse Dialkoxy-Substituted Oligo(phenyleneethenylene)s

2006

Individual but connected synthetic routes for the preparation of the all-E-configured 2,5-dipropoxy-substituted oligo(1,4-phenyleneethenylene)s 1a–g were developed. An increasing number of conjugated stilbene units from n = 1 to n = 11 led to a convergent bathochromic shift (Δλ = λ∞ − λ1 = 127 nm) in the UV/Vis absorption. An exponential function for the convergence of the absorption energies (wavelengths) in conjugated systems is proposed. By a simple extrapolation of this function the effective chain length may be determined.

PHOTOINDUCED HARDENING AND REDUCTION OF DISLOCATION MOBILITY IN C60SINGLE CRYSTALS: THE WAVELENGTH DEPENDENCE

2002

An increase of the microhardness and decrease of the dislocation mobility in C60 single crystals after light-irradiation in the wavelength range of 150–900nm in air has been observed giving evidence for photo-induced change in bonding. Efficiency of C60 phototransformation was found to increase with decreasing the wavelength.

Molecular Identification of Yeasts Associated with Traditional Egyptian Dairy Products

2009

This study aimed to examine the diversity and ecology of yeasts associated with traditional Egyptian dairy products employing molecular techniques in yeast identification. A total of 120 samples of fresh and stored Domiati cheese, kariesh cheese, and "Matared" cream were collected from local markets and examined. Forty yeast isolates were cultured from these samples and identified using the restriction-fragment length polymorphism (RFLPs) of 5.8S-ITS rDNA region and sequencing of the domains D1 and D2 of the 26S rRNA gene. Yeasts were identified as Issatchenkia orientalis (13 isolates), Candida albicans (4 isolates), Clavispora lusitaniae (Candida lusitaniae) (9 isolates), Kodamaea ohmeri (…

Study of the Evolutionary Relationships among Limonium Species (Plumbaginaceae) Using Nuclear and Cytoplasmic Molecular Markers

2000

The genus Limonium, due to the patchiness of the natural habitats of its species as well as the high frequency of hybridization and polyploidy and the possibility of reproduction by apomixis, provides an example of all the principal mechanisms of rapid speciation of plants. As an initial study of evolution in this genus, we have analyzed intra- and interspecific variability in 17 species from section Limonium, the largest in the genus, based on RFLPs of cpDNA and nuclear rDNA ITS sequences. In the cpDNA analysis, 21 restriction enzymes were used, resulting in 779 fragments, 490 of which were variable and 339 parsimony informative. L. furfuraceum exhibited two relatively divergent cpDNA hapl…

KOSMOS 2018 Gran Canaria mesocosm study: particle flux data from sediment trap

2021

The data set compiles sinking flux data collected during a KOSMOS mesocosm experiment carried out in the frame work of the Ocean Artificial Upwelling project. The experiment was performed in the North-East Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Gran Canaria in autumn 2018 and lasted for 39 days. In this study we investigated the effect of different intensities of artificial upwelling combined with two upwelling modes (recurring additions versus one singular addition) on POC export and its potential transfer efficiency to depth. The data set includes the amounts of surface water that were exchanged with nutrient-rich deep water (from ~300 m depth). It also contains particle flux data, i.e. POC flux…

Scattering lengths and universality in superdiffusive L\'evy materials

2012

We study the effects of scattering lengths on L\'evy walks in quenched one-dimensional random and fractal quasi-lattices, with scatterers spaced according to a long-tailed distribution. By analyzing the scaling properties of the random-walk probability distribution, we show that the effect of the varying scattering length can be reabsorbed in the multiplicative coefficient of the scaling length. This leads to a superscaling behavior, where the dynamical exponents and also the scaling functions do not depend on the value of the scattering length. Within the scaling framework, we obtain an exact expression for the multiplicative coefficient as a function of the scattering length both in the a…

Are the leukocyte telomere length attrition and telomerase activity alteration potential predictor biomarkers for sporadic TAA in aged individuals?

2014

A large variability in occurrence, complications, and age/gender manifestations characterizes individual susceptibility of sporadic thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAA), even in subjects with the same risk factor profiles. The reasons are poorly understood. On the other hand, TAA pathophysiology mechanisms remain unclear than those involved in abdominal aorta aneurysms. However, recent evidence is suggesting a crucial role of biological ageing in inter-individual risk variation of cardiovascular diseases, including sporadic TAA. Biological age rather than chronological age is a better predictor of vascular risk. Relevant assumptions support this concept. In confirming this evidence and our preli…

Direct conjugal transfers of Ti plasmid to soil microflora

2002

The bacterial species in soil that can receive a Ti plasmid by conjugation from Agrobacterium spp. were investigated. In order to have direct access to the potential reservoir of Ti plasmid amongst soil microflora, the conjugal system consisting of a multiply auxotrophic derivative of C58 (ST-96-4) and a derivative of pTiC58Delta(acc)R (pSTiEGK) containing a triple antibiotic-resistance cassette in traM was used to transfer the Ti plasmid in a complex soil microflora used as the recipient. Numerous transconjugants were obtained by this method but none was identified as Agrobacterium. This could be explained by the low density of Agrobacterium in the tested soil. As indicated by analysis of …
