Condensed Versus Standard Schedule of High-Dose Cytarabine Consolidation Therapy with Pegfilgrastim Growth Factor Support in Acute Myeloid Leukemia

2017

Abstract Background: The concept of intensive post-remission chemotherapy in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is based on the observation that despite achievement of a first complete remission (CR) after intensive induction therapy virtually all patients relapse in the absence of further treatment. Moreover, randomized studies showed that intensive post-remission consolidation chemotherapy was superior to prolonged low-dose maintenance therapy in younger patients. With regard to consolidation therapy, the landmark study conducted by the Cancer and Leukemia Group B established the current standard for patients aged 60 years and younger with high-dose cytarabine (HDAC) 3g/m² bidaily on days days …

Carpal tunnel release surgery: small-area variation and impact of ambulatory surgery in the autonomous region of Valencia, Spain

2013

Objective: This study aimed to analyze variability in rates of carpal tunnel release surgery among the healthcare areas of the autonomous region of Valencia, and to evaluate the contribution of ambulatory surgery and referrals to private hospitals to the variability found. Methods: We carried out a cross-sectional, population-based study, describing the rates of carpal tunnel release surgery, standardized by age and sex, among areas in the region of Valencia in 2006. The observed variation was then analyzed using small-area analysis methods. Data from hospital admissions, referrals to private hospitals, population statistics and hospital resources were used to construct standardized rates, …

Comparison of European ICU patients in 2012 (ICON) versus 2002 (SOAP)

2018

Purpose: To evaluate differences in the characteristics and outcomes of intensive care unit (ICU) patients over time. Methods: We reviewed all epidemiological data, including comorbidities, types and severity of organ failure, interventions, lengths of stay and outcome, for patients from the Sepsis Occurrence in Acutely ill Patients (SOAP) study, an observational study conducted in European intensive care units in 2002, and the Intensive Care Over Nations (ICON) audit, a survey of intensive care unit patients conducted in 2012. Results: We compared the 3147 patients from the SOAP study with the 4852 patients from the ICON audit admitted to intensive care units in the same countries as those…

Impact of early (<7 days) pacemaker implantation after cardiac surgery on long‐term pacemaker dependency

2021

We aimed to investigate pacemaker dependency after at least 1 year in patients with early (7 days) implantation, compared to those who received a pacemaker ≥7 days after cardiac surgery. Secondary endpoints were length of hospital stay and in-hospital complications.Retrospective analysis of 108 consecutive patients who received a pacemaker after cardiac surgery between 06/2012 and 06/2018. Characteristics and outcomes were compared between patients with early (7 days) and late (≥7 days) implantation. Patients were followed up with evaluation of pacemaker dependency between April and June 2019. We identified predictors of dependency by logistic regression. In total, 63.9% were men, average ag…

A European family with histidine 58 transthyretin mutation in familial amyloid polyneuropathy

1997

1. IntroductionMore than 50 mutations of the transthyretin (TTR) [1]molecule resulting in different clinical forms of amyloidosisincluding familial amyloid polyneuropathy (FAP) havebeen reported to date. Within this FAP spectrum severaltransthyretin mutations are more frequent, others are rare. One mutation, the codon 58 histidine for leucine has pre-viously been recorded only in American subjects (Mary-land/German type), originally reported in a large kinship[2,3] and in another family from Ohio [4]. In the originaldescription of the Maryland/German type of amyloidosis[2], it was stated that the early immigrants in this pedigreewere from the Rhine river area, "nearly all of them from thelef…

HPV infection and oral carcinogenesis

2010

To the Editor,High risk human papilloma viruses (HPV) have been found in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC), particularly in oropharyngeal carcinomas (1). Nevertheless, there are some controversial aspects regarding this issue (2) such as whether the HPV infec-tion is a temporary or a persistent oral infection in these patients.Recently, Chuang et al. (3) have associated the presence of HPV-16 DNA in surveillance salivary rinses with a significant risk for recurrence in HNSCC.We hypothesized that the improved prognosis of many patients with HPV-related oropharyngeal carcinoma is due to the temporary nature of the infection, and there-fore in the absence of lesions no HPV genomic…

Etiological heterogeneity and clinical variability in newborns with esophageal atresia

2018

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to define different characteristics of infants with esophageal atresia and correlations with neonatal level of care, morbidity and mortality occurring during hospital stay. Methods Charts of all newborns with esophageal atresia (EA) admitted to our University NICU between January 2003 and November 2016 were reviewed and subdivided in four groups related to different clinical presentations; EA as an isolated form (A), with a concomitant single malformation (B), as VACTERL association (C), and in the context of a syndrome or an entity of multiple congenital anomalies (D). Results We recruited 67 infants with EA (with or without tracheoesophageal f…

Prolongation du séjour hospitalier dans un service de gériatrie aiguë : identification et analyse des causes

2016

International audience; In France, the population of very old frail patients, who require appropriate high-quality care, is increasing. Given the current economic climate, the mean duration of hospitalization (MDH) needs to be optimized. This prospective study analyzed the causes of prolonged hospitalization in an acute geriatric care unit. Over 6 months, all patients admitted to the target acute geriatric care unit were included and distributed into two groups according to a threshold stay of 14 days: long MDH group (LMDHG) and short MDH group (SMDHG). These two groups were compared. 757 patients were included. The LMDHG comprised 442 with a mean age of 86.7 years, of whom 67.65% were wome…

IPOD Study: Management of Acute Left Colonic Diverticulitis in Italian Surgical Departments.

2017

Background: In recent years, the emergency management of acute left colonic diverticulitis (ALCD) has evolved dramatically despite lack of strong evidence. As a consequence, management strategies are frequently guided by surgeon’s personal preference, rather than by scientific evidence. The primary aim of IPOD study (Italian Prospective Observational Diverticulitis study) is to describe both the diagnostic and treatment profiles of patients with ALCD in the Italian surgical departments. Methods: IPOD study is a prospective observational study performed during a 6-month period (from April 1 2015 to September 1 2015) and including 89 Italian surgical departments. All consecutive patients with…

Incidence and types of complications after ablative oral cancer surgery with primary microvascular free flap reconstruction.

2015

Background: The aims of the study were 1) to evaluate the incidence and types of postoperative complications after ablative oral cancer surgery with primary free flap reconstruction and 2) identify prognostic variables for postoperative complications. Material and Methods: Desired data was retrieved from a computer database at the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Department, Queen Elisabeth hospital Birmingham, United Kingdom, between June 2007 and October 2012. Logistic regression was used to study relationships between preoperative variables and postoperative outcomes. Results: The study population consisted 184 patients, comprising 189 composite resections with reconstruction. Compli…
