Visual and Refractive Outcomes in Hyperopic Pseudophakic Patients Implanted with the Acri.LISA 366D Multifocal Intraocular Lens
2009
Our purpose was to assess the visual quality after bilateral implantation of the Acri.LISA 366D intraocular lens (IOL; Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Germany) in patients with hyperopia. We did a prospective and nonrandomized study. One hundred and seventy eyes of 85 patients had bilateral implantation of the Acri.LISA 366D IOL. The patients were divided into 2 groups: low to moderate hyperopia (IOL power, 21 to 24.5 diopters [D]) and high hyperopia (IOL power, 25 to 36 D). Monocular and binocular best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA), best distance-corrected near visual acuity (BCNVA), binocular best distance-corrected intermediate visual acuity (VA), and distance contrast sensitivity …
Visual acuity tolerance to residual refractive errors in patients with an apodized diffractive intraocular lens.
2007
To assess visual acuity tolerance to defocus caused by residual refractive errors after clear lens extraction (CLE) with apodized diffractive intraocular lens (IOL) implantation.Fernández-Vega Ophthalmological Institute, Oviedo, Spain. In this prospective study, 150 eyes of 75 consecutive patients who had bilateral CLE with implantation of an AcrySof ReSTOR Natural IOL (Alcon) were evaluated. The eyes were divided into 2 groups: myopia and hyperopia. Residual refractive errors were analyzed using vector analysis. Monocular and binocular uncorrected distance visual acuity, best corrected distance visual acuity, uncorrected distance near visual acuity, and best distance-corrected near visual a…
Foldable toric intraocular lens for astigmatism correction in cataract patients.
2007
PURPOSE: To evaluate the results of AcrySof toric intraocular lens (IOL) (Alcon) implantation to correct preexisting astigmatism in patients having cataract surgery. SETTING: Ophthalmology Service, Donostia Hospital, San Sebastian, Spain. METHODS: This prospective observational study included 30 eyes of 15 consecutive patients with more than 1.00 diopter (D) of preexisting corneal astigmatism having cataract surgery. Bilateral implantation of the AcrySof toric IOL was performed after phacoemulsification. The uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), residual refractive sphere, residual keratometric and refractive cylinders, and toric IOL axis were measured. RESU…
Effect of multizone refractive multifocal contact lenses on the Cirrus HD OCT retinal measurements
2011
Background Simultaneous vision multifocal contact lenses are widely used to alleviate the symptoms of presbyopia. These contact lenses create simultaneous retinal images due to the incoming light distribution being divided into two or more focuses. Our aim was to evaluate whether the multizone refractive multifocal contact lenses affect the measurements of the retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) and macular thickness using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Methods In this cross-over study, 30 eyes of 30 subjects with a mean age of 50.42 ± 7.82 years were fitted with multizone refractive multifocal contact lenses. Using the RNFL Thickness Analysis mode of the Cirrus HD (Carl Zeiss, Meditec, D…
Inhibition of Trypanosoma cruzi growth by medical plant extracts
2002
This study describes the screening of extracts obtained from 18 plants and two fungi used in the Chinese and Mediterranean traditional medicines on epimastigote forms of Trypanosoma cruzi. The extracts were tested against epimastigote of T. cruzi Bra C15C2 clone in vitro at 27 degrees C and at a concentration of 250 microg/ml in axenic culture. Angelica dahurica, A. pubescens, A. sinensis, Astragalus membranaceus, Coptis chinensis, Haplophyllum hispanicum, Phellodendron amurense, Poria cocos, Ranunculus sceleratus and Scutellaria baicalensis showed significant effects against the parasite with a percentage of growth inhibition between 20 and 100%. C. chinensis and R. sceleratus showed the g…
Outcomes of cataract surgery in diabetic patients: results of the Pan American Collaborative Retina Study Group.
2014
Purpose: This study was designed to evaluate the visual and anatomical outcomes after cataract surgery in diabetic patients with different intraoperative therapeutic strategies. Methods: The research design comprised of a multicentric, retrospective, interventional study conducted at 6 centers in Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Spain, and Venezuela. We included 138 diabetic patients with at least 6-month follow-up following phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and central subfield thickness were collected at baseline and at 1-, 2-, 3-, and 6-month follow-up. Of these, 42 cases were not treated with any intraoperative coadjuva…

Stereoacuity with balanced presbyopic contact lenses.
2010
Our aim was to evaluate near stereoacuity with the balanced Proclear Multifocal simultaneous vision contact lens. Twenty-five presbyopic subjects were fitted binocularly with the Proclear Multifocal contact lens and with distance contact lenses combined with reading spectacles, which served as controls. After one month, stereoacuity was measured using the vectographic Titmus and Random dot stereotests and the Howard-Dolman (HD) apparatus under photopic conditions (85 cd/m(2) ) at 40 cm. Binocular high-contrast visual acuities (BHCVA) at distance and near were examined. For the multifocal group, mean stereoacuity with the Howard-Dolman method was 22.40 ± 8.23 seconds of arc. Using the Titmus…
