Mycobacterial antigen(s) induce anergy by altering TCR- and TCR/CD28-induced signalling events: insights into T-cell unresponsiveness in leprosy.

2009

Present study investigates the role of Mycobacterium leprae (M. leprae) antigens on TCR- and TCR/CD28-induced signalling leading to T-cell activation and further correlates these early biochemical events with T-cell anergy, as prevailed in advanced stages of leprosy. We observed that both whole cell lystae (WCL) and soluble fraction of M. leprae sonicate (MLSA) not only inhibited TCR, thapsigargin and ionomycin induced calcium fluxes by diminishing the opening of calcium channels, but also TCR- or TCR/CD28-induced proximal signalling events like phosphorylation of Zap-70 and protein kinase-C (PKC) activity. Study of TCR- and TCR/CD28-induced downstream signals revealed that M. leprae antige…

Further studies on associations between leprosy and genetic markers in human serum.

1973

Seven serum proteins were typed on a sample of 910 individuals from Angola, Africa. The sample consisted of both leprosy patients and healthy controls from the same geographical area. Significant associations with leprosy were found for the Hp and Pi systems. The results are discussed.

Reduced T-cell receptor CD3ζ-chain protein and sustained CD3ε expression at the site of mycobacterial infection

2001

Control of mycobacterial infection by the cellular immune system relies both on antigen-presenting cells and on T lymphocytes. The quality of an effective cellular immune response is dependent on functional signal transduction residing in the cytoplasmic tails of the T-cell receptor CD3 components. In order to investigate potential effects of mycobacteria on T-cell receptor signalling, we examined the protein expression of T-cell signal transduction molecules (CD3zeta, ZAP-70, p59fyn, p56lck). In Western blots of peripheral blood mononuclear cells of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infected patients, only the CD3zeta-chain showed a marked reduction in protein expression. To investigate the situa…

Mediated learning materials: visibility checks in telepresence robot mediated classroom interaction

2021

Videoconferencing is increasingly used in education as a way to support distance learning. This article contributes to the emerging interactional literature on video-mediated educational interaction by exploring how a telepresence robot is used to facilitate remote participation in university-level foreign language teaching. A telepresence robot differs from commonly used videoconferencing set-ups in that it allows mobility and remote camera control. A remote student can thus move a classroom-based robot from a distance in order to shift attention between people, objects and environmental structures during classroom activities. Using multimodal conversation analysis, we focus on how partici…

Interleukin-15 in mycobacterial infection of antigen-presenting cells.

1999

Interleukin-15 (IL-15) shares many biological functions with IL-2 but also exhibits unique effects. Some of these represent the potent chemoattractant activity and expansion of distinct T-cell subsets, particularly memory T cells. IL-15 may therefore modulate the quality and quantity of cellular immune responses directed against intracellular pathogens. Immunohistochemical examination of skin lesions obtained from patients with the lepromatous or the tuberculoid form of Hansen's disease revealed intralesional IL-15 protein in both forms of the disease. In addition to Mycobacterium leprae, a number of different mycobacterial species are capable of effectively inducing IL-15 secretion in infe…

Analysing complex and articulated regulation about contestation of dismissal, the note underlines how systematic reasons require that the deferment to 31 December 2011 of the 60-day period provided by the so-called Milleproroghe Decree, should be referred to the entire te…

El Metavers: Telepresència en 3D d’avatars dissenyats per a mons digitals-virtuals

2009

This paper provides a reflection about presence and telepresence concepts in the use of emergent Digital-Virtual Technologies (DVTs), particularly concerning 3D Digital-Virtual Worlds - 3D-DVWs. It reports telepresence experience driven by avatars designed to be used in processes of 3D-DVWs interaction.

Three New Species of the Bothriomirine Genus Leprocapsus Poppius from Indonesia (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Miridae: Cylapinae)

2012

Abstract Three new species of the genus Leprocapsus Poppius from Indonesia, L. irianjayensis n. sp. and L. parvus n. sp. (Irian Jaya), and L. schuhi n. sp. (Sulawesi), are described. A color photograph of the adult and illustration of the antennal segments I and II of each treated taxa, dorsal habitus drawing of L. schuhi, illustration of the male genitalia of L. parvus, and scanning electron micrographs of selected structures of L. irianjayensis, L. schuhi, and L. scutellaris are provided. A key to all known species, diagnosis and the distribution map of the genus Leprocapsus are given.

Biomonitoring of glyphosate and AMPA in the urine of Spanish lactating mothers

2021

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the urinary levels of Glyphosate (Gly) and its metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) in Spanish breastfeeding mothers (n = 97), to identify the main predictors of exposure and to perform a risk assessment. Urine samples were analyzed using a method based on solid phase extraction and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) determination. The developed method showed limits of quantification of 0.1 μg/L for both analytes. The detection frequencies (DFs) were 54% for Gly and 60% for AMPA, with geometric means (GMs) of 0.12 μg/L and 0.14 μg/L, respectively. In the statistical analysis, no relationship was found between the u…

Association between C′3 phenotypes and various diseases

1972

The distribution of C′3 phenotypes in leprosy, rheumatism, diabetes, hyperlipedemia and hepatitis were studied. There was a significant excess of FF-phenotypes in patients with rheumatic factor while in hepatitis the SS-phenotype was significantly lower and a relatively high frequency of FF was stated. The results are discussed.
