Memory irradiation measurements for the European SMART-1 spacecraft

2005

Three different types of memory circuits, that are intended to be used on board of the European satellite SMART-1, have been radiation hardness tested according to ESA's specification. Since the satellite is equipped with an electric propulsion engine, the spacecraft will be exposed to radiation during a long time when passing the radiation belt of the Earth. A standard DRAM circuit from SAMSUNG will serve as building block of the mass memory of SMART-1, and has been tested for total dose and proton induced single event upset (SEU). The DRAM memory showed surprisingly good resistance against radiation. The proton SEU cross sections for the radiation tolerant SRAM and FIFO circuits have also…

The New Nino Capability Index for Dynamic Process Capability Analysis

2013

The process capability analysis is a crucial activity to evaluate if the process outcome meets the design specifications. Classically, such analysis is performed by verifying the in-control condition of the process and evaluating suitable capability indices, by assuming the process in-control steady-state condition. However, the in-control period of the process characterizes only a part of the system functioning cycle, the one with the lower defective rate. In particular, the system functioning cycle is also characterized by the out-of-control period, during which a greater defective rate is produced, and such increasing is not considered by the widely adopted capability indices. As consequ…

Novel test bed for induction heating power supplies

2006

Power supplies used in induction heating industrial applications must be entirely tested after its manufacturing in order to assure its security and reliability by means of a full power running test of several hours of duration. Nowadays this test is done with a dissipative load which implies a large waste of energy. This paper proposes a new high efficiency test system for induction heating generators. It incorporates a regenerative electronic load which allows an extraordinary improvement of the efficiency of this test with an important economical and ecological benefit.

Fundamental period of infilled reinforced concrete frame structures

2016

AbstractThe fundamental period of vibration appears to be one of the most critical parameters for the seismic design and assessment of structures. In the present paper, the results of a large-scale analytical investigation on the parameters that affect the fundamental period of reinforced concrete structures are presented. The influence of the number of storeys, the number of spans, the span length, the infill wall panel stiffness and the percentage of openings within the infill panel on the fundamental period of infilled RC frames was investigated. Based on these results, a regression analysis is applied in order to propose a new empirical equation for the estimation of the fundamental per…

Situation Understanding for Operational Art in Cyber Operations

2016

This paper presents a theoretically motivated framework and methodology that has been designed for finding out the emergent phenomena and information needs for planning and decision-making. The approach is based on complexity thinking, system modeling, communication and cognition philosophy, social system theories and content analysis research technique. It provides results with the analysis of quite small sets of information. The paper demonstrates the approach with a case study. The study was performed in an international cyber experiment of the Multinational Capability Development Campaign (MCDC) 2013-2014. The case study shows that the proposed approach is plausible for increasing under…

Analysis of pipeline accidents in the United States from 1968 to 2009

2014

Pipelines are responsible for the transportation of a significant portion of the U.S. energy supply. Unfortunately, pipeline failures are common and the consequences can be catastrophic. Drawing on data from the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) that covers approximately 40,000 incidents from 1968 to 2009, this paper explores the trends, causes and consequences of natural gas and hazardous liquid pipeline accidents. The analysis indicates that fatalities and injuries from pipeline accidents are generally decreasing over time, while property damage and, in some cases, the numbers of incidents are increasing over time. In five of the ten cases considered in this p…

Investigating the effect of distributed generators on traditional protection in radial distribution systems

2013

The recent changes in power network structure, development in green energy technologies and increased attention on environmental concerns have led to increase the installation of renewable energy based distributed generations (DG) in distribution networks. The increasing penetration of distributed generation in the distribution power system creates new technical and economical challenges; protection is one important topic of these challenges. High penetration of DG will have unfavorable impact on the traditional protection methods; the impact depends on the number, location and size of injected DG. To ensure safe and selective protection devices coordination, the impact of DG should be take…

The Quest for Global Safety

2007

The authors present a systematic study on the factors that have influence on the establishment of the safety conditions ensuring the rise of Global Earthing Systems. Starting from the definition of Global Earthing System given by CENELEC Document HD 637 SI and from the results of the studies done on the last years on the interconnected earthing systems inside MV networks, the paper proposes some directions of deepening on the topic of Global Safety. Some of the themes whom the paper deals with are: the correct definition of proximity, interconnection and quasi-equipotentiality of the earth electrodes belonging to a Global Earthing System; the influence of the presence of HV/MV stations on h…

New Measurement Procedure for Load Flow Evaluation in Medium Voltage Smart Grids

2013

The aim of this paper is to present a new approach for the medium voltage (MV) distribution network load flow analysis, mainly based on power measurement at the low voltage (LV) level of MV/LV distribution substations. This allows to use measurement instruments, usually already installed in the secondary substations, thus achieving an equally reliable measurement system with a lower cost compared to measurements at the MV side. The new approach can be applied using a proper communication system to collect the nodal measurements and an iterative algorithm based on ladder iterative technique (LIT) to compute the load flow. The validity of this method is presented and discussed on the basis of…

Jurisdiction and applicable law in cases of damage from space in Europe—The advent of the most suitable choice—Rome II

2010

Liability for space activities is a much discussed subject and the advent of commercial space operations has only added to its importance. Articles VI and VII Outer Space Treaty, together with Articles II and III Liability Convention, remain the main entry level for state liability for damage arising from private space activities. Few space-faring nations have introduced national space statutes that include a flow down of their international obligations. The European Union (EU) Regulation on the law applicable to non-contractual obligations—hereinafter Rome II Regulation—could harbour developments for liability law in the context of damage resulting from space operations. Space activities w…
