As Marxism and socialism pass through watershed years it is important to reflect on the abiding questions of Marxist theory and empirical analysis. This article takes up this task in the context of East Asia under the impetus of globalisation and neo-liberalism, introducing a collection of five articles collected in the special issue. The article shows that questions Marx posed about the global economy more than a century ago remain prescient and continue to animate cutting-edge research, as shown in the articles in this special issue.

PurposeThis paper critically examines how female students at a Finnish business school understand gender in management.Design/methodology/approachThe analysis is based on female students' learning diaries from a basic management course.FindingsThe findings show how students respond to the topic of gender inequality through a neoliberal postfeminist discourse. The decree by which the Cortes of 22 May 1809 were summoned by the Junta Suprema of the realm marked the beginning of a political debate of great intensity in Spain. Through this debate the different political positions and the various ideological profiles arising from the deep constitutional crisis of 1808 became gradually crystallised. This article approaches that debate from the regional perspective of one of the territories or provinces of the Bourbon monarchy—namely, the old Kingdom of Valencia— and by examining three figures relatively unknown to historians, José Canga Argüelles, Bartolomé Ribelles and Francisco Xavier Borrul.
