From protest to parliament : The role of digital technologies within an online community

2020

Our teaching case introduces the story of how the Italian Five Star Movement used digital technologies in the growth from a personal blog discussing politics back in 2005 to the most voted party in the Italian election in 2018, becoming part of the government. The Italian Five Star Movement is among the largest eParticipation initiatives globally. It is (almost) totally organized through the use of digital platforms. Members form online communities and are continuously invited to discuss and make decisions that end up into Italian politics. Adopting a chronological perspective, we describe the development of the Italian Five Star Movement, focusing on their use of digital technologies at va…

Social capital and the networked public sphere: Implications for political social media sites

2012

Submitted version of a paper from the 45th Hawaii International Conference on System Science (HICSS), 2012. Published version available from IEEE: http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/hicss.2012.535 This paper presents a theoretical lens for research on social media use in eParticipation, along with an example case study. The idea of the public sphere and how it can be applied to eParticipation research is presented. The public sphere is discussed in relation to Castell's notion of the network society as the "networked public sphere", and social capital is introduced as a possible explanation for why some people choose to participate while others refrain from doing so. An example case is presented and…

Die politische Prägung der Presse der Heimatvertriebenen

2013

2019

This thesis focuses on educational policies in favor of digital technologies and on levers of action implemented to encourage students and teachers to use these technologies in school. The ethnographic study took place from July 2013 to October 2015 and was conducted in a college engaged in tablet experimentation for digital education (TED). The research focuses on the processes of appropriation of a mobile technology designed to be educational and aimed at developing innovative and enriched new instrumented practices. The experiment study is centered around the device concept. To analyze the actual or expected effects of the use of a socio-technical object in an educational context and the…

ISOLATION OF RAT CDNA CLONES CODING FOR THE AUTOANTIGEN SS-B/LA - DETECTION OF SPECIES-SPECIFIC VARIATIONS

1993

Clones of cDNA coding for the autoantigen La (or SS-B) were isolated from a library made from rat liver. A comparison of the rat La cDNA (encoding from nt 38 to 1281 for rat La protein) with the sequences known for human and bovine La protein resulted in the identification of species-specific inserts. The inserts seem to be the result of multiplication of flanking sequences during evolution. In addition to these variations, we observed that rat La cDNAs exhibit non-canonical polyadenylation sites. Finally, a databank search resulted in the identification of a DNA sequence originally termed as TAG or TSG20X (GenBank accession No. X61893) which represents the C terminus of mouse La/SS-B prote…

CRISPR-Cas12a-Based Detection of SARS-CoV-2 Harboring the E484K Mutation

2021

The novel respiratory virus SARS-CoV-2 is rapidly evolving across the world with the potential of increasing its transmission and the induced disease. Here, we applied the CRISPR-Cas12a system to detect, without the need of sequencing, SARS-CoV-2 genomes harboring the E484K mutation, first identified in the Beta variant and catalogued as an escape mutation. The E484K mutation creates a canonical protospacer adjacent motif for Cas12a recognition in the resulting DNA amplicon, which was exploited to obtain a differential readout. We analyzed a series of fecal samples from hospitalized patients in Valencia (Spain), finding one infection with SARS-CoV-2 harboring the E484K mutation, which was t…

Exploration of the Potential Energy Landscape of Aniline Using CASSCF and XMCQDPT2 Electronic Structure Calculations

2016

In this chapter, the tools introduced in Chap. 2 are applied to the study of the photochemistry of aniline. This work has been initiated during a six-month fellowship in the group of Professor Helen Fielding in the Chemistry Department of University College London, in the framework of the FASTQUAST Initial Training Network.

The poetry of the web : online ethnography of ordinary poets

2021

Through the observation of blogs, online reviews and accounts and profiles on Facebook and Twitter, this research is devoted to the online poetic activities of French-speaking poets (Belgium, France, Quebec, Switzerland). This research work is guided by a simple and general question: how do poets invent their own ways of making poetry with the web? I was interested in poetry being done empirically by focusing on observation, data collection and encounters with poets in an approach inspired by ethnographyGoing beyond the separation between amateurs and professionals, the analysis follows the interactions between these ordinary poets and the tools of the web. During learning, settling into th…
