Size characterisation of Au nanoparticles by ICP-MS coupling techniques

2006

In modern nanotechnology the properties of nanoparticles (NPs) in different application fields is mainly dependent on their size and their size distribution. This paper aims to develop a reliable method for the size characterisation of Au NPs. Basing on the combination of two different separation techniques (liquid chromatography and gel electrophoresis), coupled on-line to inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), we study the separation of Au NP standards. Separations by liquid chromatography show size dependent retention behaviour with good reproducibility (RSD < 1%). The results are compared with complementary methods like dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission ele…

Deciphering metal-induced oxidative damages on glycated albumin structure and function

2014

Background: Metal ions such as copper or zinc are involved in the development of neurodegenerative pathologies and metabolic diseases such as diabetes mellitus. Albumin structure and functions are impaired following metal-and glucose-mediated oxidative alterations. The aim of this study was to elucidate effects of Cu(II) and Zn(II) ions on glucose-induced modifications in albumin by focusing on glycation, aggregation, oxidation and functional aspects. Methods: Aggregation and conformational changes in albumin were monitored by spectroscopy, fluorescence and microscopy techniques. Biochemical assays such as carbonyl, thiol groups, albumin-bound Cu, fructosamine and amine group measurements w…

Thermal aggregation of glycated bovine serum albumin

2010

International audience; Aggregation and glycation processes in proteins have a particular interest in medicine fields and in food technology. Serum albumins are model proteins which are able to self-assembly in aggregates and also sensitive to a non-enzymatic glycation in cases of diabetes. In this work, we firstly reported a study on the glycation and oxidation effects on the structure of bovine serum albumin (BSA). The experimental approach is based on the study of conformational changes of BSA at secondary and tertiary structures by FTIR absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, respectively. Secondly, we analysed the thermal aggregation process on BSA glycated with different glucose con…

Evaluation of multifunctional liposomes in human blood serum by light scattering.

2014

To overcome the limited functionality of "stealth" lipids based on linear poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) chains, hyperbranched polyether-based lipids that bear multiple hydroxyl groups for further chemical modification may be a suitable replacement. This study focuses on the development and characterization of "stealth" liposomes modified with a novel hyperbranched polyglycerol lipid (cholesterol-PEG30-hbPG23). An emphasis was placed on the stability of these liposomes in comparison to those containing a linear PEG derivative (cholesterol-PEG44) directly in human blood serum, characterized via dynamic light scattering (DLS). Polymer lipid contents were varied between 0 and 30 mol %, resulting …

Preparation and cytotoxic properties of goethite-based nanoparticles covered with decyldimethyl(dimethylaminoethoxy) silane methiodide

2010

The present work describes the synthesis, physico-chemical and biological properties of the first water-soluble goethite nanoparticles covered with biologically active components: oleic acid and cytotoxic decyldimethyl(dimethylaminoethoxy)silane methiodide. The structure of initial goethite nanoparticles synthesized was proved by XRD analysis and the rough estimation of nanoparticles core size gave the value of 8 nm. The size of colloidal water-soluble nanoparticles, determined by dynamic light scattering, was within 19–35 nm. Magnetic properties and cytotoxicity (against HT-1080 and MG-22A tumor cell lines) of the nanoparticles obtained were investigated. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons…

Born-Infeld Gravity: Constraints from Light-by-Light Scattering and an Effective Field Theory Perspective

2021

By using a novel technique that establishes a correspondence between general relativity and metric-affine theories based on the Ricci tensor, we are able to set stringent constraints on the free parameter of Born-Infeld gravity from the ones recently obtained for Born-Infeld electrodynamics by using light-by-light scattering data from ATLAS. We also discuss how these gravity theories plus matter fit within an effective field theory framework.

Sum rules for light-by-light scattering

2010

We derive a set of sum rules for the light-by-light scattering and fusion: $\gamma\gamma \to all$, and verify them in lowest order QED calculations. A prominent implication of these sum rules is the superconvergence of the helicity-difference total cross-section for photon fusion, which in the hadron sector reveals an intricate cancellation between the pseudoscalar and tensor mesons. An experimental verification of superconvergence of the polarized photon fusion into hadrons is called for, but will only be possible at $e^+ e^-$ and $\gamma\gamma$ colliders with both beams polarized. We also show how the sum rules can be used to measure various contributions to the low-energy light-by-light …

Thermal lens spectrometry in biochemical analysis.

1994

The photothermal spectroscopic techniques, with special emphasis on the thermal lens spectrometry (TLS), are introduced to the non-specialist in laser spectroscopy. The following topics are treated on an elementary basis: fundamentals and analytical characteristics, instrumentation, selectivity and multi-wavelength capability, the models describing the signal-concentration relationship, the sensitivity, background noise and limits of detection, the influence of light scattering and flow. Applications related to the fields of clinical and biochemical analysis and organic pollution are given. The thermal lens circular dichroism and the infrared TLS are also briefly outlined.

The solubilisation behaviour of some dichloroalkanes in aqueous solutions of PEO-PPO-PEO triblock copolymers: a dynamic light scattering, fluorescenc…

2006

The aggregation behaviour of PEO-PPO-PEO triblock copolymers in water and in water + chlorinated additive mixtures was studied by means of fluorescence spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The copolymers were chosen such as to investigate the effects of molecular architecture (L35 and 10R5) and molecular weight by keeping constant the hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance (F88 and F108). 1,2-Dichloroethane was used as a prototype of water basins contaminants. The hydrodynamic radius of the block copolymer aggregates (R(h,M)) and the intensity ratio of pyrene of the first and the third vibrational band (I(1)/I(3)) were determined as a function of…
