Structural and Gelation Characteristics of Metallo-Supramolecular Polymer Model-Network Hydrogels Probed by Static and Dynamic Light Scattering
2021
Supramolecular polymer gels are a promising class of materials whose polymer components are connected by transient bonds such as metal–ligand interactions, thereby spanning a dynamic network throug...
Cylindrical Polymer Brushes with Elastin-Like Polypeptide Side Chains
2013
Monodisperse high molar mass elastin-like polypeptide macromonomers comprising 20 pentasequences (M = 8332 g/mol) were radically polymerized to high degrees of polymerization Pw = 590. Polymerization was conducted in water well above the lower phase transition temperature, i.e., in the phase separated regime. The resulting polymers adopt a cylindrical shape as demonstrated by AFM pictures of solutions spin-cast on mica. The directional persistence of the cylindrical brushes was determined by static light scattering to Kuhn statistical segments lengths lk = 120 nm at 5 mM aqueous NaCl solution which decreased to lk = 54 nm at 0.65 M NaCl. Upon polymerization the phase transition temperature …
Elastic Properties of Liquid Crystal Elastomer Balloons
2001
We introduce a method to measure elastic properties of smectic liquid crystalline elastomers. Freely suspended smectic polymer films containing photoreactive groups are inflated to spherical bubbles and crosslinked by UV light irradiation. After crosslinking, the balloon volume is varied and elastic properties of the material are determined from the relation between radius and inner excess pressure. The influence of the network topology on the elastic behaviour is discussed.
Red-light-emitting electrochemical cell using a polypyridyl iridium(III) polymer.
2009
A deep-red phosphorescent ionic iridium(III) complex is prepared and incorporated into a polymer. Both the complex (1) and the polymer (2) were used as the single active material in solid-state light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs). The devices built up using 1 and 2 emit in the deep-red region of the visible spectrum with CIE coordinates x = 0.710; y = 0.283 and x = 0.691; y = 0.289, respectively, making them one of the deepest-red emitting LECs reported. It is the first example of a polymeric LEC incorporating an ionic iridium complex, which exhibits increased stabilities compared with the device based on the small molecular weight complex.

Polymer induced changes of the crystallization scenario in suspensions of hard sphere like microgel particles
2012
We investigated the crystallization scenario of highly cross linked polystyrene particles dispersed in the good solvent 2-ethylnaphtalene and their mixtures with non-adsorbing low molecular weight polysterene polymer using time resolved static light scattering. The samples were prepared slightly below the melting volume fraction of the polymer free system. For the polymer free samples, we obtained polycrystalline solids via crystallization scenario known from hard sphere suspensions with little competition of wall crystal formation. Addition of non-adsorbing low molecular weight polystyrene polymer leads to a considerably slowing down of the bulk crystallization kinetics. We observed a dela…
Stable Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells Using Hyperbranched Polymer Electrolyte
2021
The choice of an adequate electrolyte is a fundamental aspect in polymer light-emitting electrochemical cells (PLECs) as it provides the in situ electrochemical doping and influences the performance of these devices. In this study, a hyperbranched polymer (Hybrane DEO750 8500) blended with a Li salt is used as a novel electrolyte in state-of-the-art Super Yellow (a polyphenylenevinylene) based LECs. Due to the desirable properties of the hyperbranched polymer and the homogeneous and smooth films that it forms with the emitting polymer, PLEC with excellent electroluminescent properties are obtained using a pulsed current bias scheme. The devices are very stable, with lifetimes in excess of 2…
<title>Effect of light exposure on dislocation mobility in fullerite C60 crystals</title>
2001
The illumination-time evolution and the wavelength dependence of the photoinduced changes in dislocation mobility on the (111) face of C60 single crystals in air for the wavelength range 150 - 900 nm and power densities 0.2 - 2 mW/cm2 has been investigated. The results show that the light exposure in air leads to the decrease of the dislocation mobility. The magnitude of the effect as a function of the illumination time was investigated and a two-stage relationship was obtained. The ultraviolet light was found to be more effective than the visible light in the photoinduced reduction of dislocation mobility and solubility. In the wavelength range of 150 - 700 nm, the reduction of dislocation…
Photon correlation spectroscopy to study the dynamics of α- and β-relaxation in amorphous poly(Alkylmethacrylates) above Tg
2008
A short survey of the underlying principles of isotropic light scattering from amorphous bulk polymers is given. The interrelation between the time dependent longitudinal compliance and the autocorrelation function of density fluctuations is briefly reviewed and a comparison with poly(vinylacetate) PVAc is presented. For four poly-(alkylmethacrylates) - poly(methylmethacrylate) PMMA, poly(ethylmethacrylate) PEMA, poly(n-butylmethacrylate) PBMA and poly(n-hexylmethacrylate) PHMA - the results of photon spectroscopic studies are given and discussed in terms of the occurrence of primary and secondary relaxation processes within the accessible time range of the experiment.
Nanoscale hybrid silica/polymer Janus particles with a double-responsive hemicorona
2015
Abstract We report a versatile large-scale synthesis strategy for hybrid Janus nanoparticles with a silica core and a unilaterally attached polymer corona in a size range below 100 nm. The stimuli-responsive behavior of these nanoparticles with a poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) hemicorona is investigated. The synthesis is based on a modified version of the Pickering emulsion polymerization technique in combination with surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) in a “grafting from” approach. In a first step, poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) latex particles are prepared via Pickering emulsion polymerization. Colloidal stability is provided by 30 nm silica nan…
