Optical tomography from focus

2007

A model and a method providing a 3D reconstruction of a given translucent object from a series of image acquisitions performed with various focus tunings is proposed. The object is imaged by transmission; refraction, reflection and diffusion effects are neglected. It is modeled as a stack of translucent parallel slices and the acquisition process can be described by a set of linear equations. We propose an efficient inversion technique with O(n) complexity, allowing practical applications with a simple laptop computer in a very reasonable time. Examples of results obtained with a simulated 3D translucent object are presented and discussed.

Information-theoretic assessment of cardiovascular-brain networks during sleep

2015

This study was aimed at detecting the structure of the physiological network underlying the regulation of the cardiovascular and brain systems during normal sleep. To this end, we measured from the polysomnographic recordings of 10 healthy subjects the normalized spectral power of heart rate variability in the high frequency band (HF) and the EEG power in the δ, θ, α, σ, and β bands. Then, the causal statistical dependencies within and between these six time series were assessed in terms of internal information (conditional self entropy, CSE) and information transfer (transfer entropy, TE) computed via a linear method exploiting multiple regression models and a nonlinear method combining ne…

Four color-measuring devices compared with a spectrophotometric reference system

2009

Abstract Objectives The objective of this study was to compare the L*C*h° color coordinates of dental color-measuring devices with those of a spectrophotometric reference system. Methods The International Commission on Illumination (CIE) L*C*h° color coordinates of ceramic samples, matching the colors of the VITA Linearguide, were recorded using four color-measuring devices (VITA Easyshade (A), VITA Easyshade compact (B), Degudent Shadepilot (C), X-Rite Shadevision (D)) and a spectrophotometric reference system under standardized test conditions. The intraclass correlation coefficients, regression lines with coefficients of determination, and mean deviations of the dental color-measuring de…

Activation of a murine autoreactive B cell by immunization with human recombinant autoantigen La/SS-B: Characterization of the autoepitope

1995

Immunization of Balb/c mice with a homogeneously purified recombinant human La/SS-B protein resulted in activation of an autoreactive B cell secreting a novel monoclonal anti-La antibody termed La4B6. La4B6 reacted with La protein from a variety of sources including human, bovine, rat and mouse. ATP blocked the binding of La4B6 to recombinant La protein. The human epitope was identified as consisting of the amino acid sequence SKGRRFKGKGKGN, which includes the proposed ATP-binding site of the La protein. In the human and bovine La protein, the epitope exists as a continuous amino acid sequence. In rat and mouse the epitope was found to consist of the amino acid sequence SKG interrupted by a…

Prediction of quinolone activity against Mycobacterium avium by molecular topology and virtual computational screening.

2000

ABSTRACT We conducted a quantitative structure-activity relationship study using a database of 158 quinolones previously tested against Mycobacterium avium-M. intracellulare complex in order to develop a model capable of predicting the activity of new quinolones against the M. avium-M. intracellulare complex in vitro. Topological indices were used as structural descriptors and were related to anti- M. avium-M. intracellulare complex activity by using the linear discriminant analysis (LDA) statistical technique. The discriminant equation thus obtained correctly classified 137 of the 158 quinolones, including 37 of a test group of 44 randomly chosen compounds. This model was then applied to 2…

Comparison of frequency domain measures based on spectral decomposition for spontaneous baroreflex sensitivity assessment after Acute Myocardial Infa…

2021

Abstract The objective of this study is to present a new method to assess in the frequency domain the directed interactions between the spontaneous variability of systolic arterial pressure (SAP) and heart period (HP) from their linear model representation, and to apply it for studying the baroreflex control of arterial pressure in healthy physiological states and after acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The method is based on pole decomposition of the model transfer function and on the following evaluation of causal measures of coupling and gain from the poles associated to low frequency (0.04−0.15 Hz) oscillatory components. It is compared with traditional non-causal approaches for the sp…

EFSUMB Guidelines 2011: Comment on Emergent Indications and Visions

2012

The focus of this article is the emergent and potential indications of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS). Emergent applications of CEUS techniques include extravascular and intracavitary contrast-enhanced ultrasound, quantitative assessment of microvascular circulation for tumor response assessment, and tumor characterization using dynamic contrast-enhanced ultrasound (DCE-US). Potential indications for microbubble agents include novel molecular imaging and drug and gene delivery techniques, which have been successfully tested in animal models. Differential effects of sex hormones on peri- and endocortical bone surfaces in pubertal girls.

2005

Context: The role of sex steroids in bone growth in pubertal girls is not yet clear. Bone biomarkers are indicators of bone metabolic activity, but their value in predicting bone quality has not been studied in growing girls. Objective: This study examines the association of sex hormones and bone markers with bone geometry and density in pubertal girls. Design: The study was designed as a 2-yr longitudinal study in pubertal girls. Measurements were performed at baseline and at 1and 2-yr follow-ups. Setting: The study was conducted in a university laboratory. Participants: A total of 258 10- to 13-yr-old healthy girls at the baseline participated. Methods:Peripheralquantitativecomputedtomogr…

Factors Associated with Low Body Mass Index in Huntington's Disease: A Spanish Multicenter Study of the European Huntington's Disease Registry

2016

Background Patients with Huntington's disease (HD) are at risk for body weight loss and increased risk for institutionalization, morbidity, and mortality. The aim of this study was to determine the factors associated with low body mass index (BMI) in patients with HD. Methods In this national, observational, cross-sectional study of the European Huntington's Disease Network, the frequency of food consumption, calories, and nutrient intake in patients with HD was assessed using questionnaires validated for the Spanish population and were calculated using the software package Alimentacion and Salud (Diet and Health), version 2.0. Nutritional status was estimated using the BMI, and disease sev…
