A heuristic, iterative algorithm for change-point detection in abrupt change models

2017

Change-point detection in abrupt change models is a very challenging research topic in many fields of both methodological and applied Statistics. Due to strong irregularities, discontinuity and non-smootheness, likelihood based procedures are awkward; for instance, usual optimization methods do not work, and grid search algorithms represent the most used approach for estimation. In this paper a heuristic, iterative algorithm for approximate maximum likelihood estimation is introduced for change-point detection in piecewise constant regression models. The algorithm is based on iterative fitting of simple linear models, and appears to extend easily to more general frameworks, such as models i…

LEGO-based generalized set of two linear algebraic 3D bio-macro-molecular descriptors: Theory and validation by QSARs

2019

Abstract Novel 3D protein descriptors based on bilinear, quadratic and linear algebraic maps in R n are proposed. The latter employs the kth 2-tuple (dis) similarity matrix to codify information related to covalent and non-covalent interactions in these biopolymers. The calculation of the inter-amino acid distances is generalized by using several dis-similarity coefficients, where normalization procedures based on the simple stochastic and mutual probability schemes are applied. A new local-fragment approach based on amino acid-types and amino acid-groups is proposed to characterize regions of interest in proteins. Topological and geometric macromolecular cutoffs are defined using local and…

Stanozolol promotes osteogenic gene expression and apposition of bone mineral in vitro

2018

Abstract Stanozolol (ST) is a synthetic androgen with high anabolic potential. Although it is known that androgens play a positive role in bone metabolism, ST action on bone cells has not been sufficiently tested to support its clinical use for bone augmentation procedures. Objective: This study aimed to assess the effects of ST on osteogenic activity and gene expression in SaOS-2 cells. Material and Methods: SaOS-2 deposition of mineralizing matrix in response to increasing doses of ST (0-1000 nM) was evaluated through Alizarin Red S and Calcein Green staining techniques at 6, 12 and 24 days. Gene expression of runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), vitamin D receptor (VDR), osteopon…

Multi-approach metabolomics analysis and artificial simplified phytocomplexes reveal cultivar-dependent synergy between polyphenols and ascorbic acid…

2017

Fruits of the sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) accumulate a range of antioxidants that can help to prevent cardiovascular disease, inflammation and cancer. We tested the in vitro antioxidant activity of 18 sweet cherry cultivars collected from 12 farms in the protected geographical indication region of Marostica (Vicenza, Italy) during two growing seasons. Multiple targeted and untargeted metabolomics approaches (NMR, LC-MS, HPLC-DAD, HPLC-UV) as well as artificial simplified phytocomplexes representing the cultivars Sandra Tardiva, Sandra and Grace Star were then used to determine whether the total antioxidant activity reflected the additive effects of each compound or resulted from synergis…

Development of a method to determine axitinib, lapatinib and afatinib in plasma by micellar liquid chromatography and validation by the European Medi…

2017

A method based on micellar liquid chromatography to quantify the tyrosine kinase inhibitors axitinib, lapatinib and afatinib in plasma is reported. The sample pretreatment was a simple 1/5-dilution in a pure micellar solution, filtration and direct injection, without requiring extraction or purification steps. The three drugs were resolved from the matrix in 17 min, using an aqueous solution of 0.07 M sodium dodecyl sulfate – 6.0% 1-pentanol, buffered at pH 7 with 0.01 M phosphate salt as mobile phase, running under isocratic mode at 1 mL/min through a C18 column. The detection was performed by absorbance at 260 nm. An accurate mathematical relationship was established between the retention…

Mass, phylogeny, and temperature are sufficient to explain differences in metabolic scaling across mammalian orders?

2016

Abstract Whether basal metabolic rate‐body mass scaling relationships have a single exponent is highly discussed, and also the correct statistical model to establish relationships. Here, we aimed (1) to identify statistically best scaling models for 17 mammalian orders, Marsupialia, Eutheria and all mammals, and (2) thereby to prove whether correcting for differences in species’ body temperature and their shared evolutionary history improves models and their biological interpretability. We used the large dataset from Sieg et al. (The American Naturalist 174, 2009, 720) providing species’ body mass (BM), basal metabolic rate (BMR) and body temperature (T). We applied different statistical ap…

Oxidative stability of virgin olive oil: evaluation and prediction with an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS).

2019

Background An adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) was employed to predict the oxidative stability of virgin olive oil (VOO) during storage as a function of time, storage temperature, total polyphenol, α-tocopherol, fatty acid profile, ultraviolet (UV) extinction coefficient (K268 ), and diacylglycerols (DAGs). Results The mean total quantities of polyphenols and DAGs were 1.1 and 1.9 times lower in VOOs stored at 25 °C than in the initial samples, and the mean total quantities of polyphenols and DAGs were 1.3 and 2.26 times lower in VOOs stored at 37 °C than in the initial samples, respectively. In a single sample, α-tocopherol was reduced by between 0.52 and 0.91 times during sto…

Statistical analysis of sensory profiling data. Graphs for presenting results (PCA and ANOVA)

2000

Abstract A principal component analysis is performed to analyse the matrix of median values, with 16 varieties in rows, and all descriptors in columns. Only texture descriptors contribute to the definition of the main axes. Six varieties are identified that score high on mealiness and low on moisture, the 10 other varieties are ordered according to a mashable axis which involves texture descriptors. Next we exclude texture descriptors since the main characteristics are already found, and mealy varieties since they are not suitable for steamed potatoes. A mixed linear model (ANOVA) with random subject effects is then used for each descriptor. Flavour and taste differences are found among the…

An alternative conception of PM10 concentration changes after short-term precipitation in urban environment

2018

Abstract In the article, a linear model is presented which describes a reduction of PM10 mass concentration in relation to the type of precipitation and water vapour content in the air. The model was built using covariance analysis. In studies of PM10 concentration changes, the results of 247 observations were used, which were carried out in the urban area. Concentration changes were archived during short-term (30 min) convection and large-scale rainfalls. For the determination of PM10 mass concentration, the reference method was used. To describe changes in PM10 concentration in the air after precipitation, a series of linear models were created, in which the explanatory variables were: th…

On the variations of acoustic absorption peak with particle velocity in micro-perforated panels at high level of excitation.

2010

The acoustic behavior of micro-perforated panels (MPP) is studied theoretically and experimentally at high level of pressure excitation. A model based on Forcheimer's regime of flow velocity in the perforations is proposed. This model is valid at relatively high Reynolds numbers and low Mach numbers. The experimental method consists in measuring the acoustical pressure at three different positions in an impedance tube, the two measurement positions usually considered in an impedance tube and one measurement in the vicinity of the rear surface of the MPP. The impedance tube is equipped with a pressure driver instead of the usual loudspeaker and capable of delivering a high sound pressure lev…
