Associations Between Physical and Executive Functions Among Community-Dwelling Older Men and Women

2022

Walking is a complex task requiring the interplay of neuromuscular, sensory, and cognitive functions. Owing to the age-related decline in cognitive and physical functions, walking may be compromised in older adults, for cognitive functions, especially poor performance in executive functions, is associated with slow walking speed. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate the associations between different subdomains of executive functions and physical functions and whether the associations found differ between men and women. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed on data collected from 314 community-dwelling older adults who did not meet physical activity guidelines but had…

Dietary Quality Changes According to the Preceding Maximum Weight: A Longitudinal Analysis in the PREDIMED-Plus Randomized Trial

2020

One-year dietary quality change according to the preceding maximum weight in a lifestyle intervention program (PREDIMED-Plus trial, 55–75-year-old overweight or obese adults; n = 5695) was assessed. A validated food frequency questionnaire was used to assess dietary intake. A total of 3 groups were made according to the difference between baseline measured weight and lifetime maximum reported weight: (a) participants entering the study at their maximum weight, (b) moderate weight loss maintainers (WLM), and (c) large WLM. Data were analyzed by General Linear Model. All participants improved average lifestyle. Participants entering the study at their maximum weight were the most susceptible …

Echocardiographic reference ranges for normal left atrial function parameters results from the EACVI NORRE study

2018

International audience; Aims - To obtain the normal ranges for echocardiographic measurements of left atrial (LA) function from a large group of healthy volunteers accounting for age and gender. Methods and results - A total of 371 (median age 45 years) healthy subjects were enrolled at 22 collaborating institutions collaborating in the Normal Reference Ranges for Echocardiography (NORRE) study of the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI). Left atrial data sets were analysed with a vendor-independent software (VIS) package allowing homogeneous measurements irrespective of the echocardiographic equipment used to acquire data sets. The lowest expected values of LA function we…

Investigating dose-response effects of multimodal exercise programs on health-related quality of life in older adults.

2019

Background: Older adults are at risk of multiple chronic diseases, most of which could be prevented by engaging in regular physical activity. Frailty is a state of increased vulnerability to diseases. Worsening symptoms of frailty, such as decrease in physical functionality, can compromise health-related quality of life (HR-QOL). Previous findings suggest that frailty moderates the relationship between physical activity and HR-QOL, yet intervention findings are limited, particularly in dose–response analyses. Hence, this study was conducted to test if lower-dose physical activity (120 minutes/week) would provide the same benefits in health outcomes (physical functionality and HR-QOL) as hig…

Early determination of homocysteine levels in acute coronary syndromes, is it an independent prognostic factor?

2004

Abstract Introduction Increased concentrations of homocysteine (tHcy) are considered a potentially modifiable risk factor for coronary heart disease. The relationship between plasma homocysteine and prognosis has been less well studied. The aim of this study was to examine a possible relationship between the homocysteine levels in admission and all cause mortality in subjects presenting with non-ST segment elevation (NSTE) acute coronary syndrome. Methods We studied 854 patients with suspected NSTE acute coronary syndrome admitted consecutively to our institution, tHcy was determined at a median of 3 days from enrolment and was analyzed in tertiles together with classical risk factors and o…

Health-related quality of life and pain in children and adolescents: A school survey

2016

Background Pain problems are common in children and adolescents. Measures of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) can be used to assess children’s subjective perspectives of pain experience and its impact on their life. The aims of the study were to describe HRQoL and the prevalence of pain in a nonclinical population of children and adolescents, and to analyze the relationships between HRQoL, pain, sex, and age in a sample of children and adolescents aged 8–18 years. Methods This cross-sectional study involved a cluster sample of 20 randomly selected schools drawn within a region of Norway. The final study sample included 1099 children and adolescents. We measured HRQoL using the generic…

Changes in physical activity and sedentary time in the Finnish Schools on the Move program: a quasi-experimental study

2017

The aim of the Finnish Schools on the Move program is to create a more active and pleasant school day through physical activity (PA). In this quasi-experimental design, we compared changes in moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary time (ST) during the school day and outside school hours for Grades 1–9 over two academic years in four program schools and two reference schools. Altogether 319 girls and boys aged 7–15 participated in the study between 2010 and 2012. MVPA and ST were measured four times over the 1.5-year follow-up period for seven consecutive days, using a hip-worn ActiGraph accelerometer. Linear growth curve modeling was used to examine the effect…

Impact of metabolic syndrome on left ventricular mass in overweight and obese hypertensive subjects

2007

BACKGROUND: Metabolic syndrome (MS) has been associated with an increased left ventricular (LV) mass in recent reports. Little is known about the association of MS with LV mass (LVM) in overweight and obese individuals. The aim of our study was to investigate the relation between MS and LVM in a population of overweight and obese hypertensive subjects. METHODS: 289 non-diabetic essential hypertensives with a body mass index >25 kg/m2, were enrolled. In all subjects routine blood chemistry, echocardiographic examination and 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring were performed. RESULTS: In the group of overweight patients, participants with MS (n=58), when compared to those without it (n=…

Low Back Pain in Young Basketball and Floorball Players

2015

Objective The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of low back pain (LBP) in young female and male basketball and floorball players. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Nine basketball teams and 9 floorball teams from Tampere city district, Finland. Participants Four hundred one young female and male players (mean age: 15.8 ± 1.9 years). Assessment of risk factors Age, gender, sport, and family history of musculoskeletal disorders were assessed as risk factors for LBP. Adjustment was made on team level to avoid random effects associated with a team. Main outcome measures Information of players' background factors and LBP episodes was collected by a structure…
