An investigation of prototypical and atypical within-category vowels and non-speech analogues on cortical auditory evoked related potentials (AERPs) …

2011

The present study examined cortical auditory evoked related potentials (AERPs) for the P1-N250 and MMN components in children 9 years of age. The first goal was to investigate whether AERPs respond differentially to vowels and complex tones, and the second goal was to explore how prototypical language formant structures might be reflected in these early auditory processing stages. Stimuli were two synthetic within-category vowels (/y/), one of which was preferred by adult German listeners ("prototypical-vowel"), and analogous complex tones. P1 strongly distinguished vowels from tones, revealing larger amplitudes for the more difficult to discriminate but phonetically richer vowel stimuli. P…

Prey-predator strategies in a multiagent system

2006

This paper describes the prey-predator multiagent system which can be considered as an abstraction of more complex real-world models. Both the prey and the predators are considered as autonomous agents with their own behaviors and perception of the environment. In particular, we propose a simulator which lets study different strategies such as cooperation and individualism. An extensive experiment has been carried out in order to prove the effectiveness of the latter.

A NEW COMPLEXITY FUNCTION FOR WORDS BASED ON PERIODICITY

2013

Motivated by the extension of the critical factorization theorem to infinite words, we study the (local) periodicity function, i.e. the function that, for any position in a word, gives the size of the shortest square centered in that position. We prove that this function characterizes any binary word up to exchange of letters. We then introduce a new complexity function for words (the periodicity complexity) that, for any position in the word, gives the average value of the periodicity function up to that position. The new complexity function is independent from the other commonly used complexity measures as, for instance, the factor complexity. Indeed, whereas any infinite word with bound…

Variation in Great Tit Nest Mass and Composition and Its Breeding Consequences: A Comparative Study in four Mediterranean Habitats

2013

Bird nests are structures whose properties affect breeding performance. Thus, the vast majority of bird species build their own characteristic nests, selecting appropriate materials to do so. However, in habitats where the availability of "ideal" materials is low, some ability to use alternative ones would be necessary, even at the cost of having breeding success reduced. The Great Tit (Parus major) breeds under widely different environmental conditions. Its nests are althought to be composed mainly of moss, although very few studies have quantified nest composition. Our target here was describing Great Tit nest mass and composition in four different Mediterranean habitats, and exploring th…

BOOK REVIEW: MARQUES, T. & WIKFORSS, Å (EDS.), Shifting Concepts (Oxford University Press, 2020, 284 Pages).

2021

Abstract In this review I provide a brief analysis of the main features of the collective volume Shifting Concepts (Oxford University Press, 2020), edited by Teresa Marques and Asa Wikforss. The volume addresses several related topics, and it contains contributions from psychologists and philosophers. It deals with the topic of concept variation understood in a broad sense, for it tackles diachronic, contextual, interpersonal and even intrapersonal variation; besides, the second part of the book is devoted to the topic of concept revision and amelioration. I provide a brief description of the book and then I critically assess each of the contributions.

Myth and Mind: The Origin of Human Consciousness in the Discovery of the Sacred

2010

By accepting that the formal structure of human language is the key to understanding the uniquity of human culture and consciousness and by further accepting the late appearance of such language amongst the Cro-Magnon, I am free to focus on the causes that led to such an unprecedented threshold crossing. In the complex of causes that led to human being, I look to scholarship in linguistics, mythology, anthropology, paleontology, and to creation myths themselves for an answer. I conclude that prehumans underwent an existential crisis, i.e., the realisation of certain mortality, that could be borne only by the discovery-creation of the larger realm of symbolic consciousness once experienced a…

Glorifying Elohim with Dispositive and Probative Facts for Subsequent Motions:Nosce Te Ipsum (A Logic and Mathematics’ Approach)

2018

Pythagoras made the imperative “Man know thyself; then thou shalt know the Universe and God.” One of the Egyptian Luxor Temple proverbs is "Man, know thyself, and you are going to know the gods” and another is "The body is the house of God.” In some ways all classical literature addresses this question. Shakespeare’s asked the famous question, “To be, or not to be, that is the question,” which can be said, “To (X) be (Ǝ), or (V) not (¬) to (X) be (Ǝ), that is (=) the question (a known unknown, ?),” or ((X) Ǝ) V (¬ (X) Ǝ) = ?. Dispositive and probative facts for subsequent motions can be shown as proof of knowing God, which can be simply stated with logic and mathematics: know (cog) God (I) …

The function and rendering in Latvian of genitive constructions in the semantic structure of the Book of Lamentations of Gregor from Narek (in Armeni…

2008

This report deals with the semantics of genitive constructions (adnominal genitive) in Matean Voghberguthean as well as with the searches for rendering equivalents in Latvian. It is based on the method of paraphrase with one or more transformations – the propositions described by John Beekman and John Callow in their fundamental work Translating the Word of God. This method helps to clarify syntactical and logical relations in the word groups and to elucidate the meaning of the phrase. Grammatical construction of adnominal Genitive (nomen regens – nomen rectum) has different functions in the semantic structure of Matean. Along with the more traditional semantics instances of the adnominal g…
