Effect of ewe feeding system (grass v. concentrate) on intramuscular fatty acids of lambs raised exclusively on maternal milk

AbstractTwenty pregnant Comisana ewes were divided into two groups of 10. One group was allowed to graze a vetch pasture (grass). The second group of animals was housed collectively in a pen and was given hay and concentrates (concentrate). After lambing, all the ewes were allowed to stay with the respective lambs between 18:00 h and 07:00 h of the following day in two different pens. Therefore all the lambs were raised exclusively on maternal milk. The lambs were slaughtered at 38 days of age. Milk and lamb meat (longissimus dorsi muscle) fatty acids were analysed. Abstract The arachidonic acid (C20:4, n-6) appearing in intestinal lymph during linoleic acid (C18:2, n-6) absorption may originate from enterocyte synthesis or from the liver either after secretion in biliary phospholipids at the same time dietary linoleic acid absorption occurs or via plasma. The quality of Valle del Belice sheep’s milk and cheese produced in the hot summer season in Sicily

In response to the growing consumer demand for fresh cheese in summer, this investigation was aimed to evaluate the chemical and microbiological characteristics of sheep’s milk and cheese produced in Sicily in the hot summer months. A total of 810 bulk milk samples collected from 17 farms rearing ewes of the Valle del Belice breed were analysed for chemical composition, somatic cell count, total bacterial count and clotting parameters. Quantitative separation of Trichoderma lipid classes on a bonded phase column.

Bond Elut aminopropyl columns were used to purify the different lipid classes of Trichoderma harzianum and Trichoderma viride. This methodology permitted good separation of the fungal lipid classes in less time than traditional techniques. The incorporation of [1 (14)C]linoleic acid into neutral lipids, free fatty acids and phospholipids was quantified for both strains. The fatty acid profile of the different lipid classes of these fungal strains was determined as a function of culture time.

Abstract The relationship of serum very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) to hepatic lipid composition was studied after 28 days of protein depletion to determine the interactions between dietary protein levels and the essential fatty acid (EFA) availability. This was examined in rats using a dietary combination of 20% or 2% casein with 5% vegetable oils, variable in their n-6:n-3 fatty acid ratios. Revisiting delta-6 desaturase regulation by C18 unsaturated fatty acids, depending on the nutritional status.

Dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) play a key role in regulating delta-6 desaturase (D6D), the key enzyme for long-chain PUFA biosynthesis. Nevertheless, the extent of their effects on this enzyme remains controversial and difficult to assess. It has been generally admitted that C18 unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs) regulate negatively delta-6 desaturase (D6D). This inhibition has been evidenced in regard to a high glucose/fat free (HG/FF) diet used in reference. Effects of tannin-containing diets on small ruminant meat quality

Tannins are phenolic compounds present in several forages, tree leaves and by-products used for small ruminant feeding in the Mediterranean area. Although the effects of dietary tannins on small ruminant growth performances have been largely studied, only in the last ten years researchers have started to study the effects of tannins on meat quality. Meat from small ruminants given tanniniferous diets is lighter in colour compared to meat from animals given the same diets but in which the effects of tannins have been eliminated by the supplementation of polyethylene glycol. Fatty acid composition of a cultured sturgeon hybrid (×)

Abstract Analyses of fatty acids from the dorsal muscle of Acipenser naccarii  ×  A. baerii sturgeon hybrid were carried out. The data were compared with those reported in the literature for other sturgeons reared for human consumption. This hybrid would seem to be of great nutritional interest, its flesh being more beneficial for human health than those of other cultured sturgeons. In fact, the level of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) was very high (34.7 ± 0.67%), being similar to that of monounsaturated fatty acids (37.9 ± 0.83%). Apple pomace: An enzyme system for producing aroma compounds from polyunsaturated fatty acids

This paper reports on the possibility of obtaining C-6 (hexanal) and C-10 (2,4-dedadienal) volatile aldehydes by degradation of linoleic acid (C18∶2 Δ 9–12) under the action of the intrinsic enzyme systems found in apple pomace. More aroma compounds are produced by micronization of the pomace and by adding SO2 (60 ppm) and vitamin C (500 ppm), thereby synergistically counteracting oxidation of phenolic compounds, which is a limiting factor in bioconversion.

Seed lipids composition is a tool to discriminate among plant taxa and is related to phylogeny and biogeographic distribution. Aim of the present study was to evaluate the fatty acid (FA) composition of the seed lipids from nine natural Chamaerops humilis L. population and its relation with the climatic traits of the collection sites. The average seed lipids content was 54.8 g kg21 and the most represented FAs were oleic (478 g kg21 oil) and linoleic (230 g kg21 oil), with significant differences among the accessions.
