Mathematical skills in undergraduate students. A ten-year survey of a Plant Physiology course
2012
In the health and life sciences, as well as in other scientific disciplines, problem solving depends on mathematical skills. However, significant deficiencies are commonly found in this regard in undergraduate students. In an attempt to understand the underlying causes and to improve students' performance, this paper reports a ten-year survey (2000-2010) on mathematical skills of undergraduate Spanish students enrolled in a Plant Physiology course, based on data from tests performed throughout this time period. The results show that the percentage of correct answers decreases for questions requiring some mathematical skills, particularly those needing some calculations. Interestingly, perce…
THE IMPACT OF FAMILY AND INDIVIDUAL FACTORS ON 4TH GRADE STUDENTS’ SELF-CONFIDENCE IN READING LITERACY: RESULTS FROM PIRLS 2016
2021
The self-confidence of a child and an adult is associated with performance and achievement results. It is well-studied, and the correlation has been proved that higher self-efficacy leads to higher achievements and performance, including better performance in reading literacy. It is also known that both a family and a home environment have a tremendous impact on the child’s development and academic performance. This article focuses on the 4 th graders and their family factor impact on the development of a child’s self-confidence and concepts related to self-confidence. The purpose of this article is to define concepts that are closely related to self-confidence and to identify family factor…
Mathematical literacy in Plant Physiology undergraduates: results of interventions aimed at improving students' performance
2013
The importance of mathematical literacy in any scientific career is widely recognized. However, various studies report lack of numeracy and mathematical literacy in students from various countries. In the present work we present a detailed study of the mathematical literacy of Spanish undergraduate students of Biology enrolled in a Plant Physiology course. We have performed individual analyses of results obtained during the period 2000-2011, for questions in the examinations requiring and not requiring mathematical skills. Additionally, we present the outcome of two interventions introduced with the aim of helping students improve their prospects for success in the course. Our results confi…
Inter-generational learning of teachers: what and how do teachers learn from older and younger colleagues?
2018
Abstract: This paper examines how and what teachers learn from their older and younger colleagues. Data were gathered from interviews and written reports from 27 Belgian and Finnish teachers. Thematic qualitative analysis was used. The results revealed differences in what teachers learn from older and younger colleagues. Teachers reported learning innovative teaching methods and ICT skills from younger colleagues, whereas practical information, classroom management skills, self-regulation and community building were learned mainly from older colleagues. Attitudes regarding teaching and different ways of being a teacher were learned from both younger and older colleagues alike. Similarities …
Children who write about wise female protagonists of tales, children who think
2018
[EN] Within the proposed theme, this article has as its overall objective to provide a search that shows children’s texts of the third grade of Childhood Education and second-year-elementary-school students on traditional tales starring wise women. To obtain the texts has been designed and implemented a didactic sequence. The results achieved and the analysis carried out show that the writings made by children are successful texts. Stand out, to conclude, some key aspects of the investigation: the proposal of activities with regard to the school and the approach of different mediations as didactic sequence and literary texts, which become an engine of learning for the children.
Healthcare access of immigrants: An integrated ecological framework
2019
Access to healthcare impacts in health, and for its importance it has been conceptualized by different theoretical models. Theories tackling social barriers have been established too. Nevertheless, a lack of theorization about healthcare access of immigrants exists, and there is no theory able to integrate all the scientific literature on this and its impact on the health of immigrants. In order to study the factors relating to the access of immigrants and to guide the development and evaluation of public health interventions, an integrative approach is needed. In this regard, from an ecological perspective healthcare access of immigrants would be shaped by interrelated factors in different…
Mobile solution for better reading instruction in rural Africa
2015
GraphoGame Teacher Training Service is a mobile-based solution for providing teachers with scientifically validated pedagogical training in literacy instruction. In many African countries teachers currently have insufficient knowledge to teach literacy in local languages and learning materials are scarce, especially for children with learning difficulties. As part of the GraphoWorld network, CAPOLSA/University of Zambia is developing new mobile-based method for providing in-service training for teachers in literacy instruction and assisting children with learning difficulties. GraphoGame Teacher Training Service was piloted in October 2014 in rural Zambia. An orientative workshop was given …
Apprendere una seconda lingua da analfabeti tra ricerca e didattica. Una esperienza con i minori stranieri non accompagnati a Palermo
This contribution presents data and experiences acquired within the frame of the “Inclusion Project Linguistic School of Italian Language for Foreigners” of the University of Palermo. The program, created five years ago, has designed and managed educational courses for adults and unaccompanied minors (msna) of low and very low schooling level, most of them between 16 and 18 years old, and developed a series of social initiatives related to the insertion of these minors in Sicilian Society. These youths are part of a large number of unaccompanied adolescents who, in recent years, have come ashore to the port of Palermo along with thousands of refugees and asylum seekers. A significant number…
Predictors of risk of learning disabilities
2012
Involves all the skills, knowledge and attitudes that are presumed to be precursors of the development of conventional forms of reading and writing (Whitehurst and Lonigan, 1998). It been traced a continuity of development between the first emergent literacy skills, starting from kindergarten, and early reading skills (Phillips BM et al). Children who have difficulty in the early stages of learning to read is very likely continue to present both in later school years further failures in this area (Cornoldi,Tressoldi, 2007) triggered a negative spiral and problematic process (Tressoldi e Vio, 1996). There are numerous empirical confirmation of the importance of early identification of diffic…
