A computer controlled patterning system for scanning probe microscopes
1999
Abstract A pattern generator system for lithography based on scanning force microscopes has been developed. Patterns to be miniaturized onto a chip can be scanned or drawn by any common graphical program. The pattern file is used to control a voltage simultaneously with the microscope probe scanning the surface of the substrate. The voltage can be used in numerous different ways to manipulate the substrate, depending on the lithographic method preferred. We have demonstrated the system by adding this voltage to the z -piezo voltage of the scanner, in order to make the probe plow the pattern into a film spinned on the sample. To maintain linearity in zooming in and rotating the scanning dire…
Reliability and Fabrication of Molds for Nanoimprinting
2010
During the last decade there has been a growing attention to nanoscaled materials and to the related technologies to produce them. The problems to overcome in the manufacturing of these kinds of items increase dramatically on decreasing the dimension of the devices. In this sense, the scientific research has been strongly stimulated to try to improve and optimize all the critical issues. One of the most attractive fields in nanomanufacturing is related to nanoimprinting, i.e. to the possibility to transfer a nanoscaled pattern from a mold to another substrate. In this technology, among the others, there are two main critical steps: the preparation of a good mold and the use of a correct rel…

Lithographic fabrication of soda-lime glass based microfluidics
2013
Abstract Glass is an important material for chemical processing and analysis because of its relatively low cost, mechanical strength, chemical inertness, optical transparency, and electrical insulation and temperature resistance far beyond that of most polymeric materials. We have investigated techniques for direct writing with MeV ions on soda-lime glass as well as capping procedures to form closed buried channels suitable for high-pressure driven flow. Exposure and development of open-channel structures was studied using a combination of programmable proximity aperture lithography and different developers. Unlike our previous work on MeV ion beam lithography of natural silica where an 8% …
Microrefrigeration by quasiparticle tunnelling in NIS and SIS junctions
2000
Abstract A solid-state refrigeration method at sub-kelvin temperatures has been developed. It is based on quasiparticle tunnelling between a superconductor and a normal metal, or, between two dissimilar superconducting metals. The refrigerator is fabricated by combining nanolithography and micromachining methods. This technique has been demonstrated in both electron cooling from 0.3 to 0.1 K and in refrigeration of a dielectric platform. We describe a new fabrication method of tunnel junctions in a shadow evaporation configuration using a mechanical mask of silicon nitride.
Critical current modulation induced by an electric field in superconducting tungsten-carbon nanowires
2021
The critical current of a superconducting nanostructure can be suppressed by applying an electric field in its vicinity. This phenomenon is investigated throughout the fabrication and electrical characterization of superconducting tungsten-carbon (W-C) nanostructures grown by Ga+ focused ion beam induced deposition (FIBID). In a 45 nm-wide, 2.7 μm-long W-C nanowire, an increasing side-gate voltage is found to progressively reduce the critical current of the device, down to a full suppression of the superconducting state below its critical temperature. This modulation is accounted for by the squeezing of the superconducting current by the electric field within a theoretical model based on th…

Forming-Free and Self-Rectifying Resistive Switching Effect in Anodic Titanium Dioxide-Based Memristors
2018
The paper presents the resistive switching of electroforming-free Ti/anodic- TiO 2 /Cu memristors. Anodic TiO 2 thin films were prepared by anodizing Ti layers. Microscale devices were fabricated by direct laser-assisted photolithography. Experimental results showed a bipolar and self-rectifying behavior of the devices, which could be useful for crossbar array configurations. Moreover, a gradual resistive switching of the devices in both directions was observed, indicating the presence of multi-level resistance states.
Whispering gallery mode resonator sensors referenced to saturated absorption lines in rubidium atoms and a fs frequency comb
2019
Optical Whispering Gallery Mode Resonators (WGMR) can be produced by many methods, for example, by flame melting of silica fibers [1], by polishing of crystals [2], by optical lithography, by solidifying transparent materials, or using commercially available microspheres. They confine light by the total internal reflection and do not need mirror coatings. A part of radiation is traveling outside the WGMR as an evanescent wave and it is used for sensing applications. WGMRs are becoming increasingly popular as biosensors [3] when their surface is covered with antibodies to provide selectivity. Advantage is that light circulates in the resonator and interacts many times with a few molecules at…
