Direct Surface Relief Formation in Polymer Films

2013

Due to active development of nanoelectronics, the studies of methods of nanorelief surface formation in different materials, in particular polymers are very important. Organic polymer films in consequence of their dielectric and optical properties have been used as basis of these devices. In this paper, the possibility of UV optical record and electron beam lithography in different type of polymeric films was studied. Mechanisms of molecular structure changes: photoisomerization, destruction, cross-linking and oxidation have been discussed. The results of UV illumination of polyurethanes, polyacrylates, and some block-copolymers were described. The element analysis of polybutadiene block co…

UV optical record and electron beam lithography in polymer films

2012

Possibility of UV optical record and electron beam lithography in different type of organic polymer films was studied. Mechanisms of molecular structure changes: photoisomerization, destruction, cross-linking and oxidation have been discussed. The results of UV illumination of polyurethanes, polyacrilates, and some block-copolymers are described. The element analysis of polyisoprene block copolymer was performed before and after UV illumination, and the changes in transmission spectra of the polymer film were measured. The resolution of electron beam lithography on polymer films was studied. In the polyisoprene block copolymer film the oxidation polymerization was ascertain at UV-illuminati…

Magneto-Transport Results in SAM Based MTJs

2015

This chapter is dedicated to the description of the magneto-transport results obtained in LSMO/SAM/Co magnetic tunnel nanojunctions fabricated by nanoindentation lithography technique. We started by focusing on the study of LSMO/C12P/Co MTJs. This because C12P is a medium size alkyl chain: long enough to avoid short-circuits in the junction but short enough to give a device resistance in the order of few tens of MO and thus easier to measure. Next, we started to tune the molecule thickness from C10P to C18P (from 10 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain to 18). This allowed on one hand to validate our system by comparing the exponential increase of the junction resistance to the one reported in t…

3D defect engineering in polymer opals

2006

The possibility to create defined structures inside a synthetic opal is a key step towards applications in optics, where control of the propagation of light inside a photonic crystal is necessary. Here we report different methods for realizing defined embedded defects in opaline structures. Monodisperse colloids are synthesized by surfactant free emulsion polymerization of the acid labile monomer t-butyl-methacrylate (tBMA). The PtBMA colloids can be filled with sensitizer and photo acid generator and it is possible to crystallize them into photosensitive polymer opals. One method for the introduction of defects is a multilayer build-up of photo-labile (filled with photo acid generator) and…

Towards Plastic Electronics: Patterning Semiconducting Polymers by Nanoimprint Lithography

2002

The direct patterning of functional semiconducting polymers (see Figure) has been achieved with a nanoimprint lithography technique. The room‐temperature process described is time‐saving as repeated temperature cycling is not required. In addition, due to the direct patterning approach the need for further processing steps (plasma treatment) to pattern the underlying semiconducting material is eliminated.

3D Metamaterials with Negative Thermal Expansion and Negative Effective Compressibility

2018

Materials with negative thermal expansion are desired for controlling thermal stresses, but unusual in nature. With two-component metamaterials it is possible to tune the thermal expansion from positive over zero to negative values, even if both components have positive thermal expansion. Using gray-tone laser lithography we fabricate three-dimensional two-component polymer microlattices, exhibiting zero or negative thermal expansion [1].

Metal-polymer nanocomposite resist: a step towards in-situ nanopatterns metallization

2013

In this work we propose an alternative method for the fabrication of metal micro/nanostructures from metal-polymer nanocomposite resists and their subsequent electroless metallization. The process consists of three simple steps: 1. Fabrication of micro or nanopatterns by lithography or any other direct printing technologies (inkjet or microplotter printing...), 2. In-situ synthesis of metal nanoparticle during a post-bake step and 3. Non-electrochemical metallization of nanocomposite patterns. The novelty of our approach is that both Ag and Au nanoparticles are embedded into the polymer pattern and act as seeds for the reduction of Ag(I) when immersed into a solution of the corresponding pr…

Growth kinetics of racemic heptahelicene-2-carboxylic acid nanowires on calcite (104).

2016

Molecular self-assembly of racemic heptahelicene-2-carboxylic acid on a dielectric substrate at room temperature can be used to generate wire-like organic nanostructures consisting of single and double molecular rows. By means of non-contact atomic force microscopy, we investigate the growth of the wire-like pattern after deposition by experimental and theoretical means. From analyzing the time dependence of the mean row length, two distinct regimes were found. At the early post-deposition stage, the mean length grows in time. Subsequently, a crossover to a second regime is observed, where the mean row length remains nearly constant. We explain these findings by a mean-field rate equation a…

Surface plasmon near-field imaging of very thin microstructured polymer layers.

2004

We report on the near-field imaging of microstructured polymer layers deposited on an homogeneous metal thin film on which a surface plasmon mode is excited. The microstructures in the polymer layers are designed by electron beam lithography, and the near-field imaging is performed with a photon scanning tunneling microscope (PSTM). We show that, despite their very small height, the microstructures can be conveniently imaged with a PSTM thanks to the field enhancement at the surface of the metal thin film supporting the surface plasmon. The influence of the illumination conditions on the contrast of the PSTM images is discussed. In particular, we show that both the field enhancement and the…

Applications of DNA self-assembled structures in nanoelectronics and plasmonics

2018

In this thesis, the potential applications of DNA self-assembled structures were explored in both nanoelectronics and plasmonics. The works can be divided into two parts: electrical characterization of unmodified multilayered DNA origami and DNA-gold-nanoparticle conjugates after they were trapped between gold nanoelectrodes by dielectrophoresis, and the development of a novel fabrication method using DNA origami as a template for smooth, high resolution metallic nanostructures as well as optical characterization of them. One of the biggest challenges in self-assembled nanoelectronic devices is to connect them to macroscopic circuits. Dielectrophoretic (DEP) trapping has been used extensivel…
