Studies on Regulation of the Peroxisomal β-Oxidation at the 3-Ketothiolase Step

The peroxisomal 3-oxoacyl-CoA thiolase (thiolase) is the last enzyme involved in the β-oxidation of fatty acids. The enzyme cleaves long chain fatty acyl-CoA to generate acetyl-CoA and shortened acyl-CoA. The enzyme is nuclear encoded, synthesized in the cytoplasm and transported into peroxisomes. The thiolase B gene is inducible by the peroxisome proliferator compounds, like other genes involved in β-oxidation of fatty acids in peroxisomes.

Trans isomers of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are formed during heat treatment of oils. In the present work, the effect of dietary geometrical isomers of α-linolenic acid (18:3 n-3) on the Δ6 desaturation of all cis 18:3 n-3 was investigated, using rat liver microsomes. The desaturation rates were higher in microsomes from animals fed a cis n-3 deficient diet, as compared to those from the control group or those from rats fed 18:3 n-3 and its trans isomers. Elongational data on a large number of polyethylene samples with different structures and their blends are presented in order to evaluate the influence of the molecular weight and molecular weight distribution for a given degree of long chain branching. The elongational viscosity rises with the number of branch points and also with molecular weight and molecular weight distribution. Simple relationships between elongational viscosity at a given deformation and molecular parameters are presented.

The retina is one of the vertebrate tissues with the highest content in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA).
