Search for charginos nearly mass degenerate with the lightest neutralino in e+e− collisions at centre-of-mass energies up to 209 GeV

A search for charginos nearly mass degenerate with the lightest neutralino is performed with the data collected by the ALEPH detector at LEP, at centre-of-mass energies between 189 and 209 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 628 pb-1. The analysis is based on the detection of isolated and energetic initial state radiation photons, produced in association with chargino pairs whose decay products have little visible energy. The number of candidate events observed is in agreement with that expected from Standard Model background sources. Seagrass ecosystem response to long-term high CO2 in a Mediterranean volcanic vent

We examined the long-term effect of naturally acidified water on a Cymodocea nodosa meadow growing at a shallow volcanic CO2 vent in Vulcano Island (Italy). Seagrass and adjacent unvegetated habitats growing at a low pH station (pH = 7.65 ± 0.02) were compared with corresponding habitats at a control station (pH = 8.01 ± 0.01). Density and biomass showed a clear decreasing trend at the low pH station and the below- to above-ground biomass ratio was more than 10 times lower compared to the control. Improving the efficiency of light-emitting diode based on a thiophene polymer containing a cyano group

Abstract We report on the overall improvement of a single layer organic light-emitting diode device based on poly{[3-hethylthiophene]-co-3-[2-( p -cyano-phenoxy)ethyl]thiophene} or namely PTOPhCN. This polymer was recently developed by adding a cyano group as a side-chain substituent of the thiophenic backbone onto the main polymer chain and showed promising results for light-emitting diode devices. Using an improved device layout, bright red electroluminescence was obtained at 4 V and showed a luminance of about 400 cd/m 2 at 8 V with current densities in the order of 6000 A/m 2 .
Fourier analysis of the stimuli for pattern-induced flicker colors.

Pattern-induced flicker colors (PIFCs) were observed and color matched in rotating discs from which higher-harmonic Fourier components in the square-wave temporal luminance functions of a conventional black-and-white Benham disc had been removed. Since both reddish-brown and blue PIFCs were visible with purely sinusoidal stimuli they cannot result from differences in temporal stimulus shape or pattern and do not provide evidence for a temporal coding theory of color. Lasers have been used in vision for measuring the neural contrast sensitivity function (CSF) by forming interference fringes on the retina. We distinguish among three kinds of illumination with lasers: incoherent (without noise), Maxwellian or coherent (with coherent noise), and diffuse coherent (with speckle). The three have different characteristics and different CSF's. A coherent imaging system is designed to measure the CSF with fully coherent illumination. This is the CSF of the whole visual system, although it is measured with gratings imaged on the retina. Critical fusion frequencies have been evaluated in heterochromatic red-green flicker as a function of red-green luminous modulation defined by mL = (R-G)/(R+G)%, at five different mean luminance levels, two test sizes (2 degrees and 5 degrees) and square wave stimuli. The extreme values mL = +/- 100 correspond to ordinary light-dark flicker (red or green); mL = 0 corresponds to pure chromatic flicker, and any other values correspond to simultaneous luminous and chromatic flicker. Ensuring optimum interior lighting is a topic of great importance, as this influences not only the well-being of users but also the optimal performance of visual tasks. Lighting can be natural, but if not sufficient, it can be compensated with artificial lighting. This study highlights a methodology for designing a new lighting system that takes into account both technical and economic aspects. The method was applied to an existing school located in southern Italy, in which the electricity consumption is related to the current lighting system.
