Scale-dependent patterns and drivers of vascular plant, bryophyte and lichen diversity in dry grasslands of the Swiss inneralpine valleys

2022

AbstractThe inner-alpine dry valleys of the Swiss Alps are characterized by subcontinental climate, leading to many peculiarities in dry grassland species composition. Despite their well-known uniqueness, comprehensive studies on biodiversity patterns of the dry grasslands in these valleys were still missing. To close this gap, we sampled 161 10-m2 vegetation plots in the Rhône, Rhine and Inn valleys, recording vascular plants, terricolous bryophyte and lichen species, as well as environmental data. Additionally, we tested the scale-dependence of environmental drivers using 34 nested-plot series with seven grain sizes (0.0001–100 m2). We analysed the effects of environmental drivers related…

Extraction of Airways from CT (EXACT'09)

2012

Contains fulltext : 107854.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) This paper describes a framework for establishing a reference airway tree segmentation, which was used to quantitatively evaluate fifteen different airway tree extraction algorithms in a standardized manner. Because of the sheer difficulty involved in manually constructing a complete reference standard from scratch, we propose to construct the reference using results from all algorithms that are to be evaluated. We start by subdividing each segmented airway tree into its individual branch segments. Each branch segment is then visually scored by trained observers to determine whether or not it is a correctly segmented part o…

Differential cross section for the reaction 2H(γ, p)n from 133 to 158 MeV

1991

The cross section for the reaction 2H(γ, p)n has been measured at laboratory photon energies Eγ = 133−158 MeV and c.m. angles between 30° and 150°. The reaction was induced by a tagged bremsstrahlung photon beam incident on a liquid deuterium target. The uncertainty in the absolute cross sections is ⩽ 5%. There is now reasonable agreement between recent measurements in this energy region and the overall data set now defines the cross section sufficiently well to provide a test of current models of the reaction.

Isotope dependence of the Zeeman effect in lithium-like calcium

2016

The magnetic moment μ of a bound electron, generally expressed by the g-factor μ=−g μB s ħ−1 with μB the Bohr magneton and s the electron's spin, can be calculated by bound-state quantum electrodynamics (BS-QED) to very high precision. The recent ultra-precise experiment on hydrogen-like silicon determined this value to eleven significant digits, and thus allowed to rigorously probe the validity of BS-QED. Yet, the investigation of one of the most interesting contribution to the g-factor, the relativistic interaction between electron and nucleus, is limited by our knowledge of BS-QED effects. By comparing the g-factors of two isotopes, it is possible to cancel most of these contributions an…

Molecular Characterization of a Long Term Survivor Double Metastatic Non Small Sell Lung Cancer and Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma Treated with Gef…

2019

Management of multiple primary cancers, a not so infrequent event in oncology practice, is a critical issue due to the lack of literature . In this study, we reported the case of a patient with metachronous double metastatic non small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) who received gefitinib in combination with gemcitabine plus nab-paclitaxel and with mFOLFOX6 in first and second line, respectively. She achieved a progression free survival and an overall survival (OS) of 28 months for NSCLC and PFS-1 and OS of 20 and 13 months, respectively for PDAC. Moreover, the combination of gefitinib and chemotherapies treatments displayed a good safety profile. Given …

Nasal pressure swings as the measure of inspiratory effort in spontaneously breathing patients with de novo acute respiratory failure.

2022

Abstract Background Excessive inspiratory effort could translate into self-inflicted lung injury, thus worsening clinical outcomes of spontaneously breathing patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF). Although esophageal manometry is a reliable method to estimate the magnitude of inspiratory effort, procedural issues significantly limit its use in daily clinical practice. The aim of this study is to describe the correlation between esophageal pressure swings (ΔPes) and nasal (ΔPnos) as a potential measure of inspiratory effort in spontaneously breathing patients with de novo ARF. Methods From January 1, 2021, to September 1, 2021, 61 consecutive patients with ARF (83.6% related to COVID…

Stellenwert der Spirometertriggerung für die hochauflösende Computertomographie der Lunge in Inspiration und Exspiration

1998

PURPOSE To compare mean lung density (MLD) of paired inspiratory and expiratory thin-section CT scans acquired after patient instruction or using spirometric gating. MATERIALS AND METHODS 21 patients (13 m, 8 f. median age 59 years, two with normal lung function, 15 with obstructive, 4 with restrictive impairment) underwent thin-section CT. Paired inspiratory and expiratory scans were performed in the upper, middle and lower lung fields. They were acquired after automatic patient instruction with constant intervals between instruction and scan. Spirometrically gated scans were acquired within 4 days at 80% and 20% of vital capacity (VC) which has been determined on the CT scanner in supine …

Improved Upper Limit on the Neutrino Mass from a Direct Kinematic Method by KATRIN

2019

We report on the neutrino mass measurement result from the first four-week science run of the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino experiment KATRIN in spring 2019. Beta-decay electrons from a high-purity gaseous molecular tritium source are energy analyzed by a high-resolution MAC-E filter. A fit of the integrated electron spectrum over a narrow interval around the kinematic end point at 18.57 keV gives an effective neutrino mass square value of (−1.0−1.1+0.9) eV2. From this, we derive an upper limit of 1.1 eV (90% confidence level) on the absolute mass scale of neutrinos. This value coincides with the KATRIN sensitivity. It improves upon previous mass limits from kinematic measurements by almost a …
