Structural Remodeling of the Post‐pneumonectomy Lung is Characterized by Septal Retraction and Alveolar Duct Dilation

Murine pneumonectomy (PNX) is an established model of adult compensatory lung growth, involving structural remodeling of the peripheral parenchyma. Following left PNX, positron emission tomography and computerized tomography have demonstrated heterogeneous growth patterns within the remaining right lung. To characterize the structural changes associated with these observations, we analyzed histological sections of the right lung between 3 and 22 days after PNX. Within 3 days of PNX, alveolar septae were significantly shorter (p<0.05) in a majority of alveolar ducts, while septal angle remained unchanged. Is the Macrophage Phenotype Determinant for Fibrosis Development?

Fibrosis is a pathophysiological process of wound repair that leads to the deposit of connective tissue in the extracellular matrix. This complication is mainly associated with different pathologies affecting several organs such as lung, liver, heart, kidney, and intestine. In this fibrotic process, macrophages play an important role since they can modulate fibrosis due to their high plasticity, being able to adopt different phenotypes depending on the microenvironment in which they are found. In this review, we will try to discuss whether the macrophage phenotype exerts a pivotal role in the fibrosis development in the most important fibrotic scenarios.

An anti-inflammatory role for V alpha 14 NK T cells in Mycobacterium bovis bacillus Calmette-Guérin-infected mice.

Abstract The possible contribution of NKT cells to resistance to Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection remains unclear. In this paper we characterized the Vα14 NKT cell population following infection with Mycobacterium bovis bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG). BCG infection determined an early expansion of Vα14 NKT cells in liver, lungs, and spleen, which peaked on day 8 and was sustained until day 30. However, an NK1.1+ Vα14 NKT population preferentially producing IFN-γ predominated at an early stage (day 8), which was substituted by an NK1.1− population preferentially producing IL-4 at later stages (day 30). The article discusses the theoretical system that supports design themes and processes of recycling large urban road infrastructures, referring to an international research that frames them among the sustainable regeneration processes of the contemporary city, and further evoking the project for the transformation of Palermo's ring road that has been elaborated within this research. L’articolo facendo riferimento ad una ricerca internazionale orientata a definire temi e processi progettuali per il riciclo delle grandi infrastrutture viarie urbane fra i processi di rigenerazione sostenibile della città contemporanea discute il complesso sistema teorico che li orienta anche in rapporto al progetto di trasformazione della circonvallazione di Palermo elaborato in tale ambito. Testimoni di stagioni urbane passate queste infrastrutture possiedono una morfologia peculiare che merita di essere mantenuta mentre devono emanciparsi dall’asfalto e adeguarsi alle nuove mobilità urbane. Ibridando vegetale e costruito come mai prima i più lunghi tracciati viari dei nostri contesti urbani potranno trasformare i loro bordi in nuovi boschi urbani o foreste lineari contrastando le isole di calore e supportando nuovi habitat interspecisti. AbstractThere are large between- and within-country variations in COVID-19 death rates. Some very low death rate settings such as Eastern Asia, Central Europe, the Balkans and Africa have a common feature of eating large quantities of fermented foods whose intake is associated with the activation of the Nrf2 (Nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2) anti-oxidant transcription factor. The novel dual PI3K/mTOR inhibitor GDC-0941 synergizes with the MEK inhibitor U0126 in non-small cell lung cancer cells.

Lung cancer is a malignant disease with poor outcome, which has led to a search for new therapeutics. The PI3K/Akt/mTOR and Ras/raf/Erk pathways are key regulators of tumor growth and survival. In the present study, their roles were evaluated by MTT assay, flow cytometry and Western blotting in lung cancer cells. We found that a high efficacy of antitumor activity was shown with GDC-0941 treatment in two gefitinib-resistant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell lines, A549 and H460. In addition, H460 cells with activating mutations of PIK3CA were relatively more sensitive to GDC-0941 than A549 cells with wild-type PIK3CA.
