Intelligent solutions for real-life data-driven applications
2017
The subject of this thesis belongs to the topic of machine learning or, specifically, to the development of advanced methods for regression analysis, clustering, and anomaly detection. Industry is constantly seeking improved production practices and minimized production time and costs. In connection to this, several industrial case studies are presented in which mathematical models for predicting paper quality were proposed. The most important variables for the prediction models are selected based on information-theoretic measures and regression trees approach. The rest of the original papers are devoted to unsupervised machine learning. The main focus is developing advanced spectral cluster…
Pd2Au36(SR)(24) cluster: structure studies
2015
The location of the Pd atoms in Pd2Au36(SC2H4Ph)(24), is studied both experimentally and theoretically. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicates oxidized Pd atoms. Palladium K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) data clearly show Pd-S bonds, which is supported by far infrared spectroscopy and by comparing theoretical EXAFS spectra in R space and circular dichroism spectra of the staple, surface and core doped structures with experimental spectra.
Realization of time-resolved two-vacuum-ultraviolet-photon ionization
2009
International audience; Ultrafast dynamics of excited molecules is studied through time-resolved two-vacuum-ultraviolet (vuv)- photon ionization using a nonlinear volume autocorrelator unit. The two-vuv-photon process is induced by the intense fifth harmonic radiation of a femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser. In a proof-of-principle experiment, ultrafast dynamics of excited ethylene and oxygen molecules are investigated. Molecular decay times are deduced by comparing the experimental data with the results of a numerical model that accounts for the spatial and temporal characteristics of the harmonic field. The present experiments pave a convenient way for time domain investigations in the vuv-xuv s…
Electronic and vibrational spectroscopic studies of gold-nanoclusters
2016
Gold nanoclusters are a peculiar new material with properties between that of bulk metal and single atoms. They show size-dependent evolution of optical and electronic properties sensitive to the change of single atom or single electron in the system. Understanding the relationship between structure and properties is important to both fundamental scientific question of the role of the quantum size effects in small metal-clusters, and to application of nanoclusters in e.g. photonics, nanoelectronics, and heterogeneous catalysis. In this thesis four spectroscopic studies of monolayer-protected gold-nanoclusters are presented. The optical gap of the Au144(PET)60 and (Au/Ag)144(PET)60 (PET: pheny…
Photodynamics studies of ligand-protected gold nanoclusters by using ultrafast transient infrared spectroscopy
2015
Highly monodisperse samples of three ligand-protected gold nanoclusters Au102(pMBA)44, Au144(SC2H4Ph)60, and a cluster tentatively identified as Au130(pMBA)50, were characterized by UV/vis and infrared spectroscopy, and their photodynamics was studied by transient absorption spectroscopy. The dynamics study for each cluster was performed by electronically exciting the cluster with a pump pulse in the visible or near infrared region and by monitoring the transient absorption of vibrational modes of the ligands with a mid-IR probe pulse. The photodynamics studies were used to determine the molecular or metallic behavior of the cluster, and also to gain important size dependent information abo…
Testing the effectiveness of pyrazine defences against spiders
2020
Insects live in a dangerous world and may fall prey to a wide variety of predators, encompassing multiple taxa. As a result, selection may favour defences that are effective against multiple predator types, or target-specific defences that can reduce predation risk from particular groups of predators. Given the variation in sensory systems and hunting tactics, in particular between vertebrate and invertebrate predators, it is not always clear whether defences, such as chemical defences, that are effective against one group will be so against another. Despite this, the majority of research to date has focused on the role of a single predator species when considering the evolution of defended…
An Examination of Tourist Arrivals Dynamics Using Short-Term Time Series Data: A Space—Time Cluster Approach
2013
The purpose of this study is to examine the development of Italian tourist areas ( circoscrizioni turistiche) through a cluster analysis of short time series. The technique is an adaptation of the functional data analysis approach developed by Abraham et al (2003), which combines spline interpolation with k-means clustering. The findings indicate the presence of two patterns (increasing and stable) averagely characterizing groups of territories. Moreover, tests of spatial contiguity suggest the presence of ‘space–time clusters’; that is, areas in the same ‘time cluster’ are also spatially contiguous. These findings appear to be more robust in particular for those series characterized by an…
Ilustratīvie elementi spēļu kāršu dizainā
2021
The Gaia-ESO Survey: impact of extra mixing on C and N abundances of giant stars
2018
The GES survey using FLAMES at the VLT has obtained high-resolution UVES spectra for a large number of giant stars, allowing a determination of the abundances of the key chemical elements C and N at their surface. The surface abundances of these chemical species are well-known to change in stars during their evolution on the red giant branch after the first dredge-up episod, as a result of extra-mixing phenomena. We investigate the effects of thermohaline mixing on C and N abundances using the first comparison between the GES [C/N] determinations with simulations of the observed fields using a model of stellar population synthesis. We explore the effects of thermohaline mixing on the chemic…
Leveraging Users' Likes in a Video Streaming P2P Platform
2014
This paper investigates how a p2p television platform can take advantage of the presence of frequent channel viewers to grant them a more satisfying service than to less regular spectators. The idea we explore is to learn beforehand about the users' interests, in order to cluster them in groups that display different behaviors; then, the neighborhood creation strategy and video chunk scheduling algorithm of the overlay is altered, with the aim of serving frequent spectators in a privileged manner, providing them with a faster access to the selected channel without overly penalizing less habitual customers. An analytical model is developed, to capture the difference in startup delay that the…
