Synthesis of spongian diterpenes: (−)-spongian-16-oxo-17-al and (−)-acetyldendrillol-1
2001
Abstract An efficient diastereoselective synthesis of the spongian diterpenes (−)-spongian-16-oxo-17-al ( 1 ) and (−)-acetyldendrillol-1 ( 13 ) is described starting from (+)-podocarp-8(14)-13-one ( 6 ) via the ester-dialdehyde 11 as key intermediate. The absolute configuration at C-17 in synthetic compound 13 has conclusively been proved by NOE experiments.
Determination of trace elements in gluten-free food for celiac people by ICP-MS
2014
Abstract This paper is the first analytical approach to the study of twenty heavy metals in the gluten-free foods for celiac people. Only the ICP-MS technique was used. One of the advantages about the use of ICP-MS for this characterization is the high sensitivity that improved the limits of quantification levels for some elements that are present at low quantities in some samples. The concentration values of As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Sn, V and Zn in seventeen gluten-free food samples are reported. The highest arsenic and molybdenum levels were measured in Rice noodle from China (0.088 and 0.47 mg kg − 1 , respectively). The highest concentrations of some metal…
Comparative Analyses for Gluten-Free Biscuits from Mixture Oat and Corn
2018
Abstract Gluten-free products are necessary for the people suffering from celiac disease or having a sensibility for products containing gluten. The aim of this study was to prepare and evaluate gluten free biscuits made from a mixture of flours (50% corn flour and 50% oat flour) with various fats (palm fat, coconut oil) and sweeteners (sugar, stevioside with erythritol). Sample biscuits were made and then analyzed to find out the moisture, water activity, braking point, specific volume and sensory evaluation. All samples had the moisture close to 5-6%. Water activity ranged from 0.49 to 0.71. The breaking point was higher for sample prepared with palm fat and sugar (0.43). This sample was …
When and how to treat acute hepatitis C?
2003
Background: Appropriate treatment of acute hepatitis C is still a matter of controversy due to the lack of large controlled trials. Aim: To assess the effectiveness of interferon as treatment for acute hepatitis C by meta-analysis. Methods: MEDLINE search (1985-2002) was supplemented with manual searches of reference lists. Studies were included if they were controlled trials comparing interferon to no treatment and if they included patients with either post-transfusion or sporadic acute hepatitis C. Twelve trials were analyzed (414 patients). The outcome assessed was the sustained virological response (SVR) rate (undetectable hepatitis C virus RNA in serum at least 6 months after cessation…
Association between residential proximity to environmental pollution sources and childhood renal tumors
2016
FI=3.835 (año 2016), Q1 Background: Few risk factors for childhood renal tumors are well established. While a small fraction of cases might be attributable to susceptibility genes and congenital anomalies, the role of environmental factors needs to be assessed. Objectives: To explore the possible association between residential proximity to environmental pollution sources (industrial and urban areas, and agricultural crops) and childhood renal cancer, taking into account industrial groups and toxic substances released. Methods: We conducted a population-based case-control study of childhood renal cancer in Spain, including 213 incident cases gathered from the Spanish Registry of Childhood T…
Absolute optical chiral analysis using cavity-enhanced polarimetry
2021
Chiral analysis is central for scientific advancement in the fields of chemistry, biology, and medicine. It is also indispensable in the development and quality control of chiral compounds in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Current methods for chiral analysis, namely optical polarimetry, mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance, are either insensitive, have low time resolution, or require preparation steps, and so are unsuited for monitoring chiral dynamics within complex environments: the current need of both research and industry. Here we present the concept of absolute optical chiral analysis, as enabled by cavity-enhanced polarimetry, which allows for accurate unambi…
Total Synthesis of (±)-Oxalicumone C and Chiral Resolution and Elucidation of Its Absolute Configuration
2014
The racemic total synthesis, the chiral resolution, and the elucidation of the absolute configuration of the natural product oxalicumone C were investigated. The goal was achieved by a synthetic strategy beginning with the synthesis of a 5-hydroxy-7-methylchromone precursor. Further modification possibilities were achieved by introduction of a vinyl moiety into the chromone, which was based on a selective iodination step in the 3-position. Further transformations furnished the racemic natural product. To determinate the absolute configuration of naturally occurring oxalicumone C, both enantiomers were separated by chiral HPLC. Comparison of the calculated and experimental vibrational circul…
Carotenoid binding sites in LHCIIb
2000
The major light-harvesting complex of photosystem II can be reconstituted in vitro from its bacterially expressed apoprotein with chlorophylls a and b and neoxanthin, violaxanthin, lutein, or zeaxanthin as the only xanthophyll. Reconstitution of these one-carotenoid complexes requires low-stringency conditions during complex formation and isolation. Neoxanthin complexes (containing 30–50% of the all-trans isomer) disintegrate during electrophoresis, exhibit a largely reduced resistance against proteolytic attack; in addition, energy transfer from Chl b to Chl a is easily disrupted at elevated temperature. Complexes reconstituted in the presence of either zeaxanthin or lutein contain nearly …
