New time-differential Mössbauer emission measurements on the high-spin→low-spin relaxation in [57Co/Co(phen)3](ClO4)2

Using our new spectrometer for time-differential Mossbauer emission spectroscopy we reinvestigated the high-spin→low-spin relaxation following the57Co(EC)57Fe process in [57Co/Co(phen)3](ClO4)2 (phen=1,10-phenanthroline). In contrast to former investigations we found a temperature dependent initial population less than 1 for the metastable high-spin states. The results and the data evaluation method are presented.

Abstract Tri-organotin(IV) complexes of the triazolo-pyrimidine derivatives 4,5-dihydro-5-oxo-[1,2,4]triazolo-[1,5 a ]pyrimidine (5HtpO), 4,7-dihydro-5-methyl-7-oxo-[1,2,4]triazolo-[1,5 a ]pyrimidine (HmtpO), and 4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-5,7-dioxo-[1,2,4]triazolo-[1,5 a ]pyrimidine (H 2 tpO 2 ), and the diorganotin derivative n -Bu 2 Sn(tpO 2 ), were synthesized and characterized by means of infrared and 119 Sn Mossbauer spectroscopy. In all the complexes obtained the triazolopyrimidines act as multidentate ligands producing polymeric structures. The miniaturised Mössbauer spectrometer MIMOS IIA: Increased sensitivity and new capability for elemental analysis

The Miniaturised Mossbauer Spectrometers MIMOS II on board the two Mars Exploration Rovers (MER) have now been collecting valuable scientific data for more than five years. Mossbauer Spectrometers are part of two future missions: Phobos Grunt (Russian Space Agency) and a joint ESA—NASA Rover in 2018. The new advanced MIMOS IIA instrument described in this paper uses Silicon Drift Detectors (SDD) allowing also X-ray fluorescence chemical analysis (XRF) simultaneously to Mossbauer acquisitions. This paper highlights the features and technological improvements of the new spectrometer MIMOS IIA.

A new series of hybrid organometallic - inorganic layered magnets with the formula [Z(III)Cp*2][M(II)M(III)(ox)3] (Z(III) = Co, Fe; M(III) = Cr, Fe; M(II) = Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn; ox = oxalate; Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) has been prepared. All of these compounds are isostructural and crystallize in the monoclinic space group C2/m, as found by X-ray structure analysis. Their structure consists of an eclipsed stacking of the bimetallic oxalate-based extended layers separated by layers of organometallic cations. Abstract The crystal and molecular structure of (o-ClC6H4CH2)4Sn has been determined by X-ray crystallography. Tin is in a slightly distorted environment. The molecular dynamics of (p-ClC6H4)4Sn, (o-ClC6H4)4Sn and (o-ClC6H4CH2)4Sn have been investigated by variable temperature 119Sn Mossbauer spectroscopy (VTMS). A Debye-solid behaviour has been detected for (p-ClC6H4)4Sn, where, on the other hand, no influence by hydrogen–chlorine interaction on the magnitude of the dynamics data and functions seems to occur. For the o-Cl-substituted derivatives, a non-Debye-solid character could be advanced.

Abstract A miniaturized Mossbauer spectrometer, adapted to the Earth’s conditions from the instrument developed for Mars space missions, has been used for the first time to study in situ variations with depth and transformations with time of iron minerals in a gleysol. The instrument is set into a PVC tube and can be moved up and down precisely (±1 mm) at the desired depth. Mossbauer spectra were obtained from 15 to 106 cm depth and repeated exactly at the same point at different times to follow mineralogical transformations with time. Stability and nature of the volume collapse of ε-Fe2O3 under extreme conditions

Iron oxides are among the major constituents of the deep Earth’s interior. Among them, the epsilon phase of Fe2O3 is one of the less studied polymorphs and there is a lack of information about its structural, electronic and magnetic transformations at extreme conditions. Here we report the precise determination of its equation of state and a deep analysis of the evolution of the polyhedral units under compression, thanks to the agreement between our experiments and ab-initio simulations. Our results indicate that this material, with remarkable magnetic properties, is stable at pressures up to 27 GPa. Short-range antiferromagnetic correlations have been studied in the layered compounds (PPh 4 ) [Fe I I Fe I I I (ox) 3 ] and (NBu 4 ) [Fe I I Fe I I I (ox) 3 ] by neutron polarization analysis and Mossbauer spectroscopy. Polarized neutron diffraction profiles obtained between 2 and 50 K on (d 2 0 -PPh 4 ) [Fe I I Fe I I I (ox) 3 ] show no magnetic Bragg scattering; the lack of such scattering indicates the absence of long-range magnetic order. However, a broad asymmetric feature observed at a Q of ca. 0.8 A - 1 is attributed to two-dimensional short-range magnetic correlations, which are described by a Warren function. The effect of diamagnetic dilution of the Fe sublattice on the structural and magnetic properties of the double perovskite Sr{sub 2}Fe{sub 1-x}Ga{sub x}ReO{sub 6} (0 =}0.4 is detected by x-ray structural analysis accompanied by the observation of a magnetically ordered and a paramagnetic phase in the corresponding Moessbauer spectra. Below 20% Ga content, Ga statistically dilutes the -Fe-O-Re-O-Fe- double-exchange pathways. Phase separation begins at 20% Ga substitution; between 20% and 40% ofmore » Ga content, the paramagnetic Ga-based phase does not contain any Fe. The Fe-containing, paramagnetic cubic phases which can be detected by Moessbauer spectroscopy first appear for x=0.4.« less
Mössbauer Spectral Study of Two Layered Honeycomb Molecular Magnets: PPh4FeIIFeIII(ox)3 and NBu4FeIIFeIII(ox)3

The Mossbauer spectra of the layer ferrimagnets PPh4FeIIFeIII(ox)3 and NBu4FeIIFeIII(ox)3 have been measured between 1.9 and 315 K. The paramagnetic spectra exhibit both high-spin iron(II) and iron(III) doublets. The iron(II) quadrupole splittings are negative and decrease substantially upon cooling as a result of a low-symmetry crystal field splitting. In contrast, the iron(III) splittings are small, positive, and virtually independent of temperature. The respective magnetic ordering temperatures of 30 and 42.5 K agree well with the phase observed by bulk magnetometry and the magnetic sextets yield hyperfine fields of ca. 60 kOe for iron(II) and 540 kOe for iron(III).
