Ligand Noninnocence in Cobalt Dipyrrin–Bisphenols: Spectroscopic, Electrochemical, and Theoretical Insights Indicating an Emerging Analogy with Corro…
2019
Three cobalt dipyrrin-bisphenol (DPPCo) complexes with different meso-aryl groups (pentafluorophenyl, phenyl, and mesityl) were synthesized and characterized based on their electrochemistry and spectroscopic properties in nonaqueous media. Each DPPCo undergoes multiple oxidations and reductions with the potentials, reversibility, and number of processes depending on the specific solution conditions, the specific macrocyclic substituents, and the type and number of axially coordinated ligands on the central cobalt ion. Theoretical calculations of the compounds with different coordination numbers are given in the current study in order to elucidate the cobalt-ion oxidation state and the innoc…
Synthesis of 1,3-bis(trimethylcyclam) and 1,3-bis(trimethylcyclen) substituted benzenes
2009
Pd-catalyzed amination of 1,3-dibromobenzene with N,N',N''-trimethylcyclam and N,N',N''-trimethylcyclen provided corresponding 1,3-bis(tetraazamacrocyclic) derivatives of benzene in 25-32% yields. The dependence of the products yields on the phosphine ligand applied (BINAP, DavePHOS) as well as on the stoichiometry of starting compounds was established. Scope and limitations for the synthesis of N-phenyl and N-(3-bromophenyl) derivatives of trimethylcyclam and trimethylcyclen were demonstrated.
Size‐Selective Encapsulation of Hydrophobic Guests by Self‐Assembled M 4 L 6 Cobalt and Nickel Cages
2012
Subtle differences in metal-ligand bond lengths between a series of [M(4)L(6)](4-) tetrahedral cages, where M = Fe(II), Co(II), or Ni(II), were observed to result in substantial differences in affinity for hydrophobic guests in water. Changing the metal ion from iron(II) to cobalt(II) or nickel(II) increases the size of the interior cavity of the cage and allows encapsulation of larger guest molecules. NMR spectroscopy was used to study the recognition properties of the iron(II) and cobalt(II) cages towards small hydrophobic guests in water, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction was used to study the solid-state complexes of the iron(II) and nickel(II) cages.
Diabetes and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system: Implications for covid-19 patients with diabetes treatment management
2020
In the context of the COVID-19 continuous spreading, this paper focuses on the increased risk of diabetic patients regarding the metabolic control and the uncertainties related to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Chronic hyperglycaemia negatively affects the immune system, which triggers an increase of morbidity and mortality for viral infections. A key aspect of COVID-19 resides in the involvement of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone (RAAS) system that causes a cascade of reactions mediated by vasoactive peptides with implications in vasoconstriction, vascular permeability, oxidative stress remodelling and tissue injuries. Activation of RAAS at pulmonary level, is responsible for the local damage. Many q…
Pharmaceuticals and other urban contaminants threaten Amazonian freshwater ecosystems
2021
Abstract Urban areas in the Brazilian Amazon have grown at an unprecedented rate during the last years. About 90% of the wastewater produced by these urban areas are discharged untreated into Amazonian freshwater ecosystems, constituting a potential environmental pathway for pharmaceuticals and other chemicals consumed by modern societies (e.g. psychostimulants, personal-care products, hormones). The distribution of these chemicals into the Amazon River and their potential risks for freshwater biodiversity have not been evaluated so far. Here, we show the results of the largest chemical monitoring campaign conducted in the Amazon region. We assessed exposure patterns for 43 pharmaceuticals …
Machine learning regression algorithms for biophysical parameter retrieval: Opportunities for Sentinel-2 and -3
2012
Abstract ESA's upcoming satellites Sentinel-2 (S2) and Sentinel-3 (S3) aim to ensure continuity for Landsat 5/7, SPOT-5, SPOT-Vegetation and Envisat MERIS observations by providing superspectral images of high spatial and temporal resolution. S2 and S3 will deliver near real-time operational products with a high accuracy for land monitoring. This unprecedented data availability leads to an urgent need for developing robust and accurate retrieval methods. Machine learning regression algorithms may be powerful candidates for the estimation of biophysical parameters from satellite reflectance measurements because of their ability to perform adaptive, nonlinear data fitting. By using data from …
Estimating the macroscopic capillary length from Beerkan infiltration experiments and its impact on saturated soil hydraulic conductivity predictions
2020
International audience; The macroscopic capillary length, λc, is a fundamental soil parameter expressing the relative importance of the capillary over gravity forces during water movement in unsaturated soil. In this investigation, we propose a simple field method for estimating λc using only a single-ring infiltration experiment of the Beerkan type and measurements of initial and saturated soil water contents. We assumed that the intercept of the linear regression fitted to the steady-state portion of the experimental infiltration curve could be used as a reliable predictor of λc. This hypothesis was validated by assessing the proposed calculation approach using both analytical and field d…
Structural characterization and chemical composition of aragonite and vaterite in freshwater cultured pearls
2008
AbstractVaterite and aragonite polymorphs in freshwater cultured pearls from mussels of the genus Hyriopsis (Unionidae) were structurally and compositionally characterized by Raman spectroscopy, Micro computer tomography, high resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe analysis and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The appearance of vaterite in pearls is related to the initial stages of biomineralization, although we demonstrate that vaterite can not be a precursor to aragonite. It is not related to a particular crystal habit and therefore does not have a structural functionality in the pearls. Larger contents of elements typically…
Recent Advances in Techniques for Hyperspectral Image Processing
2009
International audience; Imaging spectroscopy, also known as hyperspectral imaging, has been transformed in less than thirty years from being a sparse research tool into a commodity product available to a broad user community. Currently, there is a need for standardized data processing techniques able to take into account the special properties of hyperspec- tral data. In this paper, we provide a seminal view on recent advances in techniques for hyperspectral image processing. Our main focus is on the design of techniques able to deal with the high-dimensional nature of the data, and to integrate the spa- tial and spectral information. Performance of the discussed techniques is evaluated in …
Multi-phase classification by a least-squares support vector machine approach in tomography images of geological samples
2016
Abstract. Image processing of X-ray-computed polychromatic cone-beam micro-tomography (μXCT) data of geological samples mainly involves artefact reduction and phase segmentation. For the former, the main beam-hardening (BH) artefact is removed by applying a best-fit quadratic surface algorithm to a given image data set (reconstructed slice), which minimizes the BH offsets of the attenuation data points from that surface. A Matlab code for this approach is provided in the Appendix. The final BH-corrected image is extracted from the residual data or from the difference between the surface elevation values and the original grey-scale values. For the segmentation, we propose a novel least-squar…
