Search for Axionlike Dark Matter through Nuclear Spin Precession in Electric and Magnetic Fields

2017

We report on a search for ultralow-mass axionlike dark matter by analyzing the ratio of the spinprecession frequencies of stored ultracold neutrons and 199Hg atoms for an axion-induced oscillating electric dipole moment of the neutron and an axion-wind spin-precession effect. No signal consistent with dark matter is observed for the axion mass range 10−24 ≤ ma ≤ 10−17 eV. Our null result sets the first laboratory constraints on the coupling of axion dark matter to gluons, which improve on astrophysical limits by up to 3 orders of magnitude, and also improves on previous laboratory constraints on the axion coupling to nucleons by up to a factor of 40. ispartof: Physical Review X vol:7 issue:…

Extremely Low Frequency Magnetic Fields Do Not Affect LTP-Like Plasticity in Healthy Humans.

2020

Introduction: Several studies explored, in vitro, the biological effects of extremely low-frequency magnetic fields (ELF-MFs) and reported the induction of functional changes in neuronal activity. In particular, ELF-MFs can influence synaptic plasticity both in-vitro and in animal models. Indeed, some studies reported an increase in long-term potentiation (LTP) whereas others suggested its reduction. However, no specific study has investigated such effect in humans. Aims: To evaluate whether ELF-MFs affect the propensity of the human cortex to undergo LTP-like plasticity. Methods: We designed a randomized, single-blind, sham-controlled, cross-over study on 10 healthy subjects. Cortical plas…

Low-Cost Sensor Based on SDR Platforms for TETRA Signals Monitoring

2021

The paper presents the design and implementation of an electromagnetic field monitoring sensor for the measurement of the Terrestrial Truncked Radio (TETRA) signals using low-cost software defined radio (SDR) platforms. The sensor includes: an SDR platform, a Global Positioning System (GPS) module and a hardware control module. Several SDR platforms having different resolutions of the analog–digital converters were tested in the first phase. The control module was implemented in two variants: a fixed one, using a laptop, and a mobile one, using a Raspberry Pi. The tests demonstrate the following achieved performances: instantaneous acquisition band of 5.12 MHz

Metamagnetic Behavior in [M (tvp) (NCS)2] Coordination Polymers (M = Fe(II) and Co(II); tvp = 1,2-di-(4-pyridyl)-ethylene)

1999

Abstract We report the synthesis and magnetic properties of two new coordination polymers of formula [M(tvp)(NCS)2] (M = Fe(II) and Co(II)). The magnetic data reveal the occurrence of metamagnetic behavior. Switching from bulk antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic behavior occurs for magnetic fields greater than 1300 G (Fe(II)) and 450 G (Co(II)) at temperatures lower than 4 K. Both compounds are isomorphous. A molecular structure is suggested in the light of the magnetic properties and precedent data on related systems.

Anisotropic diffusion in etched particle tracks studied by field gradient NMR

1994

Etched particle tracks produced after heavy ion irradiation of polymer foils are used as model systems to test the performance of NMR in a newly developed ultrahigh magnetic field gradient system. The stimulated NMR echo decay of molecules diffusing in the channels, formulated in terms of the self part of the intermediate scattering function, is anisotropic and yields the form factor of the channels.

Magnetic Soret effect in a hydrocarbon based colloid containing surfacted Mn–Zn ferrite particles

1999

Abstract The Soret effect has been investigated in a hydrocarbon based magnetic fluid containing surfacted Mn 0.5 Zn 0.5 Fe 2 O 4 nanoparticles with a magnetic volume concentration of 2.3%. The magnetic fluid fills up a vertical diffusion column which consists of a flat vertical channel between two walls and two reservoirs at the ends of the channel. One wall of the channel is being heated while the another one is cooled, maintaining a temperature gradient over the channel's width that leads to separation of particles due to the Soret effect as well as the convective flow in the channel. The combination of the two mentioned effects brings up a measurable change of the concentration of magne…

Alignment of Tellurium Nanorods via a Magnetization−Alignment− Demagnetization (“MAD”) Process Assisted by an External Magnetic Field

2009

Tellurium (Te) nanorods have been successfully aligned on a solid substrate via a magnetization-alignment-demagnetization ("MAD") process in the presence of an external magnetic field. Te nanorods carrying a poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) shell were first converted into magnetic nanocylinders by assembling magnetite nanoparticles on their surface via a hydrophobic interaction in THF. We demonstrate that, below a critical concentration of the nanoparticles, this assembly process is able to quantitatively tune the magnetite nanoparticles' density on the nanorods in terms of their stoichiometric ratio. Due to the polymer and surfactant on their surface, the formed magnetic nanocylinders are sol…
