Recent benthic foraminiferal assemblages and their relationship to environmental variables on the shoreface and inner shelf off Valencia (Western Med…

2014

The environmental variables that determine the distributions of benthic foraminiferal assemblages on the shoreface and inner shelf of the north of Valencia province (Western Mediterranean) are identified. The possible influence of variables such as water depth, distance from shore, hydrodynamics, substrate type, carbonate content, organic matter content and human activity is evaluated. Multivariate cluster-Q-type analysis and redundancy analysis (RDA) are used to identify the environmental variables that have the greatest influence on the assemblage distribution. The spatial distribution of the assemblages is closely associated with water depth and substrate. The diversity and abundance of …

New solutions for energy supply: sea wave and offshore photovoltaic in Sardinia (Italy)

2018

This work illustrates a study on the integration among sea wave farm and off shore photovoltaic in Italian island (Sardinia). In order to exploit both energy sources, the paper presents an innovative prototype, designed and developed by Palermo University. According the data about sea wave and solar energy potential, we evaluated the installation of wave-solar energy farms, based on the prototype presented in this paper.

Small Wind Turbines: Specification, Design, and Economic Evaluation

2016

In this work, we consider various aspects of small wind turbines' (SWTs) design and operation. First, an extensive literature study is presented by considering SWTs specification, market statistics, the smart grid, and the prosumer concepts as well as the most important parameters affecting the efficiency of wind turbines. Then, both the literature review and series of coupled numerical simulations investigating impact of the chosen design solutions on small wind turbine operation are performed. It allowed objective evaluation of different design approaches, which in turn enabled the systematic identification of actual limitations as well as the opportunities for specific design solutions o…

Description, microhabitat selection and infection patterns of sealworm larvae (Pseudoterranova decipiens species complex, nematoda: ascaridoidea) in …

2013

Third-stage larvae of the Pseudoterranova decipiens species complex (also known as sealworms) have been reported in at least 40 marine fish species belonging to 21 families and 10 orders along the South American coast. Sealworms are a cause for concern because they can infect humans who consume raw or undercooked fish. However, despite their economic and zoonotic importance, morphological and molecular characterization of species of Pseudoterranova in South America is still scarce. Methods: A total of 542 individual fish from 20 species from the Patagonian coast of Argentina were examined for sealworms. The body cavity, the muscles, internal organs, and the mesenteries were examined to dete…

Long-Term Coexistence of Rotifer Cryptic Species

2011

Despite their high morphological similarity, cryptic species often coexist in aquatic habitats presenting a challenge in the framework of niche differentiation theory and coexistence mechanisms. Here we use a rotifer species complex inhabiting highly unpredictable and fluctuating salt lakes to gain insights into the mechanisms involved in stable coexistence in cryptic species. We combined molecular barcoding surveys of planktonic populations and paleogenetic analysis of diapausing eggs to reconstruct the current and historical coexistence dynamics of two highly morphologically similar rotifer species, B. plicatilis and B. manjavacas. In addition, we carried out laboratory experiments using …

Phylogenetic analysis of cryptic speciation in the polychaetePygospio elegans

2012

Development in marine invertebrate species can take place through a variety of modes and larval forms, but within a species, developmental mode is typically uniform. Poecilogony refers to the presence of more than one mode of development within a single species. True poecilogony is rare, however, and in some cases, apparent poecilogony is actually the result of variation in development mode among recently diverged cryptic species. We used a phylogenetic approach to examine whether poecilogony in the marine polychaete worm, Pygospio elegans, is the result of cryptic speciation. Populations of worms identified as P. elegans express a variety of developmental modes including planktonic, broode…

Evagination of Cells Controls Bio-Silica Formation and Maturation during Spicule Formation in Sponges

2011

The enzymatic-silicatein mediated formation of the skeletal elements, the spicules of siliceous sponges starts intracellularly and is completed extracellularly. With Suberites domuncula we show that the axial growth of the spicules proceeds in three phases: (I) formation of an axial canal; (II) evagination of a cell process into the axial canal, and (III) assembly of the axial filament composed of silicatein. During these phases the core part of the spicule is synthesized. Silicatein and its substrate silicate are stored in silicasomes, found both inside and outside of the cellular extension within the axial canal, as well as all around the spicule. The membranes of the silicasomes are inte…

Trimeric Hemibastadin Congener from the Marine Sponge Ianthella basta

2012

The first naturally occurring trimeric hemibastadin congener, sesquibastadin 1 (1), and the previously reported bastadins 3, 6, 7, 11, and 16 (2-6) were isolated from the marine sponge Ianthella basta, collected in Indonesia. The structure of 1 was elucidated on the basis of 1D and 2D NMR measurements and by HRMS. Among all the isolated compounds, the linear sesquibastadin 1 (1) and bastadin 3 (2) showed the strongest inhibition rates for at least 22 protein kinases (IC(50) = 0.1-6.5 μM), while the macrocyclic bastadins (3-6) demonstrated a strong cytotoxic potential against the murine lymphoma cell line L5178Y (IC(50) = 1.5-5.3 μM).

A validated energy model of a solar dish-Stirling system considering the cleanliness of mirrors

2020

Solar systems based on the coupling of parabolic concentrating collectors and thermal engines (i.e. dish-Stirling systems) are among the most efficient generators of solar power currently available. This study focuses on the modelling of functioning data from a 32 kWe dish-Stirling solar plant installed at a facility test site on the University of Palermo campus, in Southern Italy. The proposed model, based on real monitored data, the energy balance of the collector and the partial load efficiency of the Stirling engine, can be used easily to simulate the annual energy production of such systems, making use of the solar radiation database, with the aim of encouraging a greater commercialisa…
