Interrelationships of the Haploporinae (Digenea: Haploporidae): A molecular test of the taxonomic framework based on morphology
2009
The taxonomic framework of the Haploporidae is evaluated and the relationships within the Haploporinae are assessed for the first time at the generic level using molecular data. Partial 28S and complete ITS2 rDNA sequences from representatives of six of the nine recognised genera within the Haploporinae were analysed together with published sequences representing members of two haploporid subfamilies and of the closely related family Atractotrematidae. Molecular analyses revealed: (i) a close relationship between the Atractotrematidae and the Haploporidae; (ii) strong support for the monophyly of the Haploporinae, Dicrogaster and Saccocoelium, and the position of Ragaia within the Haplopori…

Pityriasis lichenoides chronica associated with herpes simplex virus type 2.
2012
Introduction. Pityriasis lichenoides is a rare, acquired spectrum of skin conditions of an unknown etiology.Case Report. A 28-year-old man presented with recurrent outbreaks of herpes simplex virus associated with the onset of red-to-brown maculopapules located predominantly in trunk in each recurrence. Positive serologies to herpes simplex virus type 2 were detected. Histopathological examination of one of the lesions was consistent with a diagnosis of pityriasis lichenoides chronica.Discussion. Pityriasis lichenoides is a rare cutaneous entity of an unknown cause which includes different clinical presentations. A number of infectious agents have been implicated based on the clustering of …
Immunoelectron Microscopy of Hemocyanin from the Keyhole Limpet (Megathura crenulata): A Parallel Subunit Model
1993
Abstract Immunoelectron microscopy has been performed using negatively stained immune complexes of keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) subunit 2 di- and multidecamers with domain-specific monoclonal antibodies. One antibody (KLH2 a macr 1) links the hemocyanin molecules in a side-to-side pattern, whereas the other antibody (KLH2 fg macr 1) links the molecules end-to-end. From existing knowledge of the domain sequence of KLH subunit 2, these data provide support for a parallel arrangement of subunits within each decamer. Ten N-terminal a macr: domains are then present at the noncollar region of each decamer with 10 C-terminal g macr domains at the collar region. The immunonegative staining data …
Animal models: Murine cytomegalovirus
2002
Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on murine cytomegalovirus (CMV) animal models. Multiple-organ cytomegalovirus disease, interstitial pneumonia in particular, is a major concern in the therapy of hematopoietic malignancies by hematoablative treatment and bone marrow transplantation (BMT). Human CMV (hCMV) is the prototype member of the subfamily, Betaherpesvirinae, of the virus family, Herpesviridae . Its genome is a linear, double-stranded DNA with a coding capacity of ca. 165 open reading frames. During an aeon of co-evolution, CMVs have adapted themselves to their respective hosts; therefore, CMV biology is most reliably studied in a natural virus-host combination. Even though hCMV …
Longitudinal Study of Cytokine Expression, Lipid Profile and Neuronal Growth Factors in Human Breast Milk from Term and Preterm Deliveries
2015
Breast milk (BM) is considered as a reference for infant nutrition. The role of bioactive components, such as cytokines, hormones, growth factors (GFs) and fatty acids (FAs) is poorly known, but they might be implicated in immune response development. The aim of this study was to identify the lipid profile and the spectrum of cytokines and neuronal GF in BM samples and analyse the influence of gestational age and lactation time on these components. This study used a longitudinal prospective method for the characterization of cytokines, FAs and GFs global profiles in 120 BM samples from 40 healthy mothers (20 preterm and 20 term) collected as colostrum, transitional and mature milk. The cyto…
Managing Metro Manila
2017
Metro Manila residents are confronted everyday with the challenges of flooding, substandard housing and horrendous traffic. In this low altitude plain, any significant rainfall raises water levels in many small streams, and contributes to traffic jams. The rapid population growth of the metropolis has led to the proliferation of squatter areas, including alongside flood-prone rivers and railroad tracks. The lack of discipline and of decent garbage management contribute in turn to a worsening of floods when streams are covered with litter. The fast rise in motorization rates, coupled with the many imperfections of the public transport system, make Manila one of the most congested cities in t…
A method for calculating the crowding-out effect in sport mega-event impact studies: The 2010 FIFA World Cup
2011
Tourist expenditures constituted the largest part of the economic impact of South Africa's 2010 FIFA Football World Cup. However, limited air transport capacity and increased accommodation prices may have led to crowding-out effects. Until now, crowding-out could only be considered by using econometric modelling based on data of inbound arrival or accommodation statistics. This paper suggests a methodology for measuring the crowding-out effect precisely. It is based on the available statistics in South Africa and is applicable at province level. An important innovation is to distinguish crowding-out from time-switching effects. The paper explains the theoretical framework of crowding-out as…
Volunteering in Religious Events
2019
Religious event volunteering is a contemporary form of religious tourism that has interest for both scholars and practitioners: for the former, it is a social behavior that can be analyzed through many disciplines, consumer behavior being the one chosen here; for the latter, religious events do contribute to destinations development, although their impact is difficult to measure. This chapter explores (conceptually) the common origins of religion and volunteering and reviews briefly the event marketing to better understand the second part, which (empirically) reflects the results of two surveys undertaken with volunteers in two Catholic mega-events held in Spain. Findings show appropriatene…
