Composition of mosses, their metabolites and environmental stress impacts
2018
Sūnu lipīdi satur daudzas bioloģiski aktīvas vielas un veikta to aktivitātes izpēte. Sūnu sekundārie metabolīti uzrāda augstu antimikrobiālo aktivitāti un spējas inhibēt vairāku vēža šūnu līniju attīstību un līdz ar to satur perspektīvas vielu grupas izmantošanai biomedicīnā. Vides stresa ietekmes…
Weekly oxaliplatin, high-dose folinic acid and 24h-5-fluorouracil (FUFOX) as salvage therapy in metastatic colorectal cancer patients pretreated with…
2002
Irinotecan (CPT-11), oxaliplatin (OXA) and different folinic acid (FA) modulated 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) regimens are active as first-and second-line chemotherapy of metastatic colorectal cancer. However, the best palliative sequence of these substances is still unclear. After CPT-11 containing regimens the optimal salvage protocol has not yet been defined. Here, we retrospectively analysed the weekly ambulant combination of OXA with continuous FA/5-FU (FUFOX) after two different CPT-11 containing chemotherapeutic regimens. Patients: During October 1999 and May 2001, 20 patients (median 62; 48-74 years) were included who had disease progression after CPT-11/bolus FA/5-FU (Saltz; 7 patients, g…
NMDA receptor antagonist treatment increases the production of new neurons in the aged rat hippocampus
2002
The production of new neurons declines during adulthood and persists, although at very low levels, in the aged hippocampus. Since neurogenesis in young adults has been related to learning and memory, its reduction may contribute to the age-related impairments in these abilities. Adrenalectomy (ADX) enhances neurogenesis in the aged hippocampus, although it also induces neuronal cell death. Since the administration of an NMDA receptor antagonist enhances neurogenesis in young adult rats without deleterious morphological effects, we have tested whether neurogenesis could be reactivated in aged rats. Our study shows that cell proliferation, cell death, neurogenesis and the number of radial gli…
Metabolites produced by agents of dieback of grapevine in Sicily: Lasiodiplodia mediterranea, Neofusicoccum parvum and N. vitifusiforme
2015
Botryosphaeria dieback was recently reported in West Sicilian vineyards. The disease complex was only associated with isolates of genus Lasiodiplodia in 2007 and together with Diplodia seriata, Neofusicoccum parvum and Neofusicoccum vitifusiforme, this latest reported for the first time on Vitis vinifera in Italy. Moreover, a representative isolate of each species was inoculated on green shoots and fulfilled Koch’s postulates, although the lengths of vascular discolourations were variable depending on the species. As well as the other GTD causal agents, the expression of foliar symptoms (pale colour along the margins and between veins) was also occasional in Sicily, it was hypothesized that…

Content variability of bioactive secondary metabolites in Hypericum perforatum L
2021
Abstract St John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum L.; Hypericaceae) is a perennial medicinal herb widespread and largely used in folk medicine inside the Mediterranean basin. Many bioactive compounds have been identified within its extracts. Under a pharmacological point of view, the most important of them belong to the chemical classes of naphthodianthrones, phloroglucinols and polyphenols. Many factors have been claimed responsible for the phytochemical variability in Hypericum perforatum, such as genotype, geographical origin, harvesting stage and age of the plants. Yet, when harvested plant material is addressed to the industry, the standardization of the active ingredients over cultivation…
Polyamine Oxidase 5 loss-of-function mutations in Arabidopsis thaliana trigger metabolic and transcriptional reprogramming and promote salt stress to…
2017
The family of polyamine oxidases (PAO) in Arabidopsis (AtPAO1-5) mediates polyamine (PA) back-conversion, which reverses the PA biosynthetic pathway from spermine, and its structural isomer thermospermine (tSpm), into spermidine and then putrescine. Here, we have studied the involvement of PA back-conversion in Arabidopsis salinity tolerance. AtPAO5 is the Arabidopsis PAO gene member most transcriptionally induced by salt stress. Two independent loss-of-function mutants (atpao5-2 and atpao5-3) were found to exhibit constitutively higher tSpm levels, with associated increased salt tolerance. Using global transcriptional and metabolomic analyses, the underlying mechanisms were studied. Stimul…
Using NMR in saliva to identify possible biomarkers of glioblastoma and chronic periodontitis
2018
Nowadays there is increasing interest in identifying-and using-metabolites that can be employed as biomarkers for diagnosing, treating and monitoring diseases. Saliva and NMR have been widely used for this purpose as they are fast and inexpensive methods. This case-control study aimed to find biomarkers that could be related to glioblastoma (GBL) and periodontal disease (PD) and studied a possible association between GBL and periodontal status. The participants numbered 130, of whom 10 were diagnosed with GBL and were assigned to the cases group, while the remaining 120 did not present any pathology and were assigned to the control group. On one hand, significantly increased (p < 0.05) meta…
Treatment of advanced adenocarcinomas of the exocrine pancreas and the gallbladder with 5-fluorouracil, high dose levofolinic acid and oral hydroxyur…
1996
BACKGROUND To date there is no established chemotherapeutic treatment for patients with unresectable locally advanced and/or metastatic carcinomas of the exocrine pancreas or the gallbladder. A multicenter Phase II trial has been performed by the Southern Italy Oncology Group with the aim of evaluating the clinical effectiveness and tolerability of weekly 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in modulation with intravenous (i.v.) high dose levofolinic acid and oral hydroxyurea. METHODS A total of 70 patients fulfilling the standard eligibility for a Phase II study were enrolled in the trial. Forty patients had advanced pancreatic adenocarcinoma and 30 had advanced gallbladder carcinoma. The treatment sched…
Molecular predictors of response to decitabine in advanced chronic myelomonocytic leukemia: a phase 2 trial.
2011
Abstract Hydroxyurea is the standard therapy of chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) presenting with advanced myeloproliferative and/or myelodysplastic features. Response to hypomethylating agents has been reported in heterogeneous series of CMML. We conducted a phase 2 trial of decitabine (DAC) in 39 patients with advanced CMML defined according to a previous trial. Median number of DAC cycles was 10 (range, 1-24). Overall response rate was 38% with 4 complete responses (10%), 8 marrow responses (21%), and 3 stable diseases with hematologic improvement (8%). Eighteen patients (46%) demonstrated stable disease without hematologic improvement, and 6 (15%) progressed to acute leukemia. With…
