Impact of Annealing Temperature on Tunneling Magnetoresistance Multilayer Stacks
2020
The effect of annealing temperatures on the tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) of MgO-based magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) has been investigated for annealing between 190 and 370°C. The TMR shows a maximum value of 215% at an annealing temperature of 330°C. A strong sensitivity of the TMR and the exchange bias of the pinned ferromagnetic layers on the annealing temperature are observed. Depending on sensor application requirements, the MTJ can be optimized either for stability and pinning strength or for a high TMR signal by choosing the appropriate annealing temperature. The switching mechanism of the ferromagnetic layers in the MTJ and the influence of the annealing on the layer properties,…
An anomalous wave formation at the Al/Cu interface during magnetic pulse welding
2020
This paper reports an anomalous wave formation at an Al/Cu bimetallic interface produced by magnetic pulse welding. The mechanism of the anomalous wave formation is investigated using both metallurgical characterization and the interface kinematics. It reveals that the anomalous wave is formed with the combination of the intermediate zone and the interdiffusion zone with a thickness of 70 nm, wherein the intermediate zone is caused by the local melting due to the high shear instability, and the interdiffusion zone is formed below the melting point of aluminum combined with ultrahigh heating and cooling rates of about 10^13 °C s^−1. A multiphysics simulation of impact welding has been perfor…
Structural characterization of TiO2/TiN O (δ-doping) heterostructures on (1 1 0)TiO2 substrates
2003
Abstract TiO2/TiNxOy δ-doping structures were grown on the top of (1 1 0)TiO2 rutile substrates by low pressure metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy (LP-MOVPE) technique at 750 °C. The samples were analyzed by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and X-ray diffraction techniques (rocking curves and φ-scans). The presence of satellites in the (1 1 0)TiO2 rocking curve revealed the epitaxial growth of 10 period δ-doping structures. The thickness of the TiO2 layers, 84 nm, was deduced from the satellites period. HRTEM observations showed around 1.5 nm thick δ-doping layers, where the presence of nitrogen was detected by EELS. The analy…
High temperature oxidation of Mg2(Si-Sn)
2016
Abstract High temperature oxidation of Mg 2 Si 1- x Sn x alloys ( x = 0.1 0.6) has been investigated. The oxidation rate was slow for temperatures below 430 °C. In the temperature range between 430500 °C all the alloys exhibited breakaway oxidation. The onset temperature of the breakaway region in general decreased with increasing level of Sn in the alloy. The breakaway behavior is explained by a combination of the formation of a non-protective MgO layer and the formation of Sn-rich liquid at the interface between the oxide and Mg depleted Mg 2 Sn.
Melting temperature prediction by thermoelastic instability: An ab initio modelling, for periclase (MgO)
2021
Abstract Melting temperature (TM) is a crucial physical property of solids and plays an important role for the characterization of materials, allowing us to understand their behavior at non-ambient conditions. The present investigation aims i) to provide a physically sound basis to the estimation of TM through a “critical temperature” (TC), which signals the onset of thermodynamic instability due to a change of the isothermal bulk modulus from positive to negative at a given PC-VC-TC point, such that (∂P/∂V)VC,TC = -(∂2F/∂V2) VC,TC = 0; ii) to discuss the case of periclase (MgO), for which accurate melting temperature observations as a function of pressure are available. Using first princip…
EPR in glass ceramics
2019
Abstract The development of novel materials requires a profound understanding of the relationship between a material's performance and its structural properties. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is a well-established technique for a direct detection and identification of paramagnetic defects in solids. This chapter provides an overview of the applicability of continuous wave EPR spectroscopy in the studies of glass ceramics focusing on transition metal (Mn2 +, Cu2 +, Cr3 +) and rare earth (Gd3 +, Eu2 +, Er3 +, Yb3 +) ion local structure analysis. EPR spectra features of the above-mentioned paramagnetic probes in glasses and glass ceramics are compared and discussed in detail. The chapt…
Effect of surface finishing on the oxidation behaviour of a ferritic stainless steel
2017
Abstract The corrosion behaviour and the oxidation mechanism of a ferritic stainless steel, K41X (AISI 441), were evaluated at 800 °C in water vapour hydrogen enriched atmosphere. Mirror polished samples were compared to as-rolled K41X material. Two different oxidation behaviours were observed depending on the surface finishing: a protective double (Cr,Mn) 3 O 4 /Cr 2 O 3 scale formed on the polished samples whereas external Fe 3 O 4 and (Cr,Fe) 2 O 3 oxides grew on the raw steel. Moreover, isotopic marker experiments combined with SIMS analyses revealed different growth mechanisms. The influence of surface finishing on the corrosion products and growth mechanisms was apprehended by means o…
Tandem laser-gas metal arc welding joining of 20 mm thick super duplex stainless steel: An experimental and numerical study
2020
The present work covers the topic of strains and stresses prediction in case of welded steel structures. Steel sheets of 20 mm thickness made in UR™2507Cu are welded using a laser and gas metal arc welding processes combination. The focused laser beam leads the arc in a Y-shape chamfer geometry. Both sources are 20 mm apart from each other in order to avoid any synergic effect with each other. In order to predict residual strain, a 3D unsteady numerical simulation has been developed in COMSOL finite element software. A volume heat source has been identified based on the temperature measurements made by 10 K-type thermocouples, implanted inside the workpiece. The 50 mm deep holes are drille…
Electrical and thermomechanical properties of CVI- Si3N4 porous rice husk ash infiltrated by Al-Mg-Si alloys
2017
Abstract The effect of following processing parameters on the electrical and thermomechanical properties of Al/Si3N4 deposited silica composites was investigated using the Taguchi method and analysis of variance (ANOVA): infiltration temperature and time, atmosphere, effect of Si3N4 coating, porosity content in the preforms, and magnesium content in the alloy. The contributions of each of the parameters to modulus of elasticity, electrical resistivity, coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), and thermal diffusivity of the resulting composites were determined. The maximum modulus of elasticity and electrical resistivity of obtained composites were 265 GPa, and 1.37 × 10−3 Ω m, respectively. …
Vapor plume and melted zone behavior during dissimilar laser welding of titanium to aluminum alloy
2020
The present study deals with continuous Yb:YAG laser welding of pure titanium to aluminum alloy A5754 performed with different beam offsets to the joint line. Spectroscopic and morphological characterization of vapor plume exiting the keyhole was combined with post-mortem observation and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis of the welds. The laser beam centered on the joint line resulted in periodic transversal inclination of a vapor jet on the aluminum side associated with a local increase of melt width and an intense spatter formation. Such behavior can be attributed to the instability of the keyhole wall from the aluminum side. The beam offset on the titanium side led to …
