Catalytic Functionalization of Methane and Light Alkanes in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

2014

International audience; The development of catalytic methods for the effective functionalization of methane yet remains a challenge. The best system known to date is the so-called Catalytica Process based on the use of platinum catalysts to convert methane into methyl bisulfate with a TOF rate of 10−3 s. In this contribution, we report a series of silver complexes containing perfluorinated tris(indazolyl)borate ligands that catalyze the functionalization of methane into ethyl propionate upon reaction with ethyl diazoacetate (EDA) by using supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) as the reaction medium. The employment of this reaction medium has also allowed the functionalization of ethane, prop…

Molecular Selectivity of CH 4 –C 2 H 6 Mixed Hydrates: A GCMC Study

2021

International audience; In this paper, we report the first grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation study aiming at characterizing the competitive trapping of CH4 and C2H6 molecules into clathrate hydrates under temperature conditions typical of those encountered at the surface of Titan. Various compositions of the fluid in contact with the clathrate phase have been considered in the simulations, including pure methane, pure ethane, and mixed fluids made of various methane/ethane ratios. The trapping isotherms obtained from the simulations clearly show that ethane molecules can be enclathrated at lower pressures than methane molecules. In addition, they provide evidence that the methane molec…

Diffuse and focused carbon dioxide and methane emissions from the Sousaki geothermal system, Greece

2006

[1] We report first data on chemical composition of the gas emitted by the geothermal system of Sousaki, Greece. Gas manifestations display typical geothermal gas composition with CO2 as the main component and CH4 and H2S as minor species. Soil gas composition derives from the mixing of two end-members (atmospheric air and geothermal gas). Soil CO2 fluxes range from<2 to 33,400 g m−2 d−1. The estimated diffuse output of hydrothermal CO2, estimated for an area of 0.015 km2, is about 630 g s−1, while a tentative estimation of CH4 diffuse output gave a value of about 1.15 g s−1. Point sources accounted for lower flux values of ∼26 g s−1 of CO2, ∼0.1 g s−1 of CH4 and ∼0.02 g s−1 of H2S.

Responses of methane oxidation to temperature and water content in cover soil of a boreal landfill

2007

Abstract Methane oxidation in a cover soil of a landfill located in a boreal climate was studied at temperatures ranging from 1–19 °C and with water content of 7–34% of dry weight (dw), corresponding to 17–81% of water-holding capacity (WHC) in order to better understand the factors regulating CH 4 oxidation at low temperatures. CH 4 consumption was detected at all the temperatures studied (1–19 °C) and an increase in CH 4 consumption rate in consecutive incubations was obtained even at 1 °C, indicating activation or increase in enzymes and/or microorganisms responsible for CH 4 oxidation. CH 4 consumption was reduced with low water content (17%WHC) at all temperatures. The response of CH 4…

Thin-layer chromatography of chlorinated cresols

1977

Abstract The thin-layer chromatography of four chlorinated cresols was studied on five layer materials using eleven solvent systems. Sharp spots were obtained except on Kieselguhr G layers. The best separation of the individual compounds occurred on silica gel-containing layers with dichloromethane as the solvent. Each solvent system was found to cause a different separation on different layers.

Untersuchungen zurFriesschen Verschiebung von Estern derortho- undpara-Methoxybenzoesure

1979

TheFries rearrangement of different methoxy benzoates has been investigated. Frompara-methoxy benzoates the corresponding hydroxy-4′-methoxy benzophenones could be obtained in good yields by treatment withLewis acids (especially TiCl4) in nitromethane at 20°C (4-hydroxy derivatives) or without solvent at 120°C (2-hydroxy derivatives). Under the same conditions only demethylation occurs withortho-methoxy benzoates leading to the corresponding salicylates. Small amounts of hydroxy-2′-methoxy benzophenones were obtained by treatment with polyphosphoric acid.

Influence of Some Ionic Liquids Containing the Trifluoromethanesulfonate Anion on the Vapor–Liquid Equilibria of the Acetone + Methanol System

2011

Isobaric vapor–liquid equilibria (VLE) for the binary systems acetone + 1-butyl-3-ethylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([beim][triflate]), methanol + [beim][triflate], acetone + 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([bmpyr][triflate]), and methanol + [bmpyr][triflate] as well as the VLE for the acetone + methanol + [beim][triflate] and acetone + methanol + [bmpyr][triflate] ternary systems have been obtained at 100 kPa using a recirculating still. The addition of both ionic liquids to the solvent mixtures produced an important salting-out effect, and the azeotrope tended to disappear for small amounts of ionic liquid. The experimental binary data sets were independe…

Silica-supported HgSO4/H2SO4: a convenient reagent for the hydration of alkynes under mild conditions

2010

Abstract The silica-supported aqueous-phase catalyst (SAPC) approach has proven convenient for efficiently performing the hydration of alkynes with HgSO 4 /H 2 SO 4 to give the corresponding carbonyl compounds in dichloromethane under mild conditions. The use of this solid reagent significantly improves the reaction work-up as it merely involves filtering and evaporating the solvent.
