Bayesian subcohort selection for longitudinal covariate measurements in follow-up studies

2016

We consider planning longitudinal covariate measurements in follow-up studies where covariates are time-varying. We assume that the entire cohort cannot be selected for longitudinal measurements due to financial limitations and study how a subset of the cohort should be selected optimally in order to obtain precise estimates of covariate effects in a survival model. In our approach, the study will be designed sequentially utilizing the data collected in previous measurements of the individuals as prior information. We propose using a Bayesian optimality criterion in the subcohort selections, which is compared with simple random sampling using simulated and real follow-up data. This study ex…

General anesthesia for oral and dental care in paediatric patients with special needs : a systematic review

2020

Background The objective of this study is to conduct a systematic review of the literature on the characteristics, needs and current situation of dental care for pediatric patients with special needs. Material and methods An exhaustive search for literature published until June 1, 2020. It was carried out using PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane and EBSCO, with the following keywords: Oral Surgical Procedures and Dentistry, Operational and Anesthesia, General Y (Spanish[lang] or English[lang] ) Y (infant[MeSH] Or child[MeSH] Or adolescent[MeSH]). The research was carried out following the PRISMA research methodology. Results The most common indication for general anesthesia (GA) was t…

Factors of good visual outcome in acute post-cataract endophthalmitis (friends group)

2009

International audience; Purpose: To analyze initial clinical factors of good visual outcome in patients with acute endophthalmitis following cataract surgery. Methods: A prospective study was performed in 4 University hospital (Dijon, Grenoble, Lyon, Saint-Etienne, FRIENDS group) on 100 patients with acute post-cataract endophthalmitis. Factors related to cataract surgery (complications), the initial presentation and the microbiological identification were analyzed according to the final visual outcome using univariate and multivariate analysis (SPSS 12.0). Results: 46% out of the patients had a final visual acuity less than or equal to 0.3 logMar (good visual outcome) at 6 months while 10%…

Aqueous enzymatic process assisted by microwave extraction of oil from yellow horn (Xanthoceras sorbifolia Bunge.) seed kernels and its quality evalu…

2013

Abstract In this study, aqueous enzymatic process (AEP) assisted by microwave extraction (ME) of oil from yellow horn ( Xanthoceras sorbifolia Bunge.) seed kernel was investigated. Central composite design (CCD) and response surface methodology (RSM) were used to optimise an enzyme cocktail (cellulase, hemicellulase, pectinase) for AEP. The main factors of ME were also studied. A maximal oil extraction yield of 55.8% was achieved under optimal conditions. Moreover, scanning electron microscope (SEM) was applied to characterise the extraction process. Analysing chemical composition of the extracted oil by GC–MS showed that the content of unsaturated fatty acids by this emerging method (91.18…

Rejection odds and rejection ratios: A proposal for statistical practice in testing hypotheses

2016

Much of science is (rightly or wrongly) driven by hypothesis testing. Even in situations where the hypothesis testing paradigm is correct, the common practice of basing inferences solely on p-values has been under intense criticism for over 50 years. We propose, as an alternative, the use of the odds of a correct rejection of the null hypothesis to incorrect rejection. Both pre-experimental versions (involving the power and Type I error) and post-experimental versions (depending on the actual data) are considered. Implementations are provided that range from depending only on the p-value to consideration of full Bayesian analysis. A surprise is that all implementations -- even the full Baye…

Rejoinder: fractures in the edifice of PLS

2023

Purpose This study aims to provide a response to the commentary by Yuan on the paper “Marketing or Methodology” in this issue of EJM. Design/methodology/approach Conceptual argument and statistical discussion. Findings The authors find that some of Yuan’s arguments are incorrect, or unclear. Further, rather than contradicting the authors’ conclusions, the material provided by Yuan in his commentary actually provides additional reasons to avoid partial least squares (PLS) in marketing research. As such, Yuan’s commentary is best understood as additional evidence speaking against the use of PLS in real-world research. Research limitations/implications This rejoinder, coupled with Yuan’s comm…

Assessment of methodologies and data used to calculate desalination costs

2017

Abstract In desalination, similarly with other industries, the cost of the final product is one of the most important criteria that define the commercial success of a specific technology. Therefore, when new projects are planned or new technologies are proposed, the analysis of the expected costs attracts a lot of attention and is compared to (perceived) costs of state-of-the-art desalination or costs of alternative fresh water supply options. This comparison only makes sense if the cost assessment methodologies are based on the same principles and use common assumptions. This paper assesses: (i) the methodologies used to calculate the water cost; (ii) the boundary conditions and (iii) the …

«Desmontando» a Calderón: la dramaturgia crítica de Francisco Ruiz Ramón

2017

The study examines the critical point of view and research methodology that was applied by Francisco Ruiz Ramon (1930-2015) to analyze Spanish Theater, from its excellent Historia del teatro espanol (1967) to his latest research focused on Pedro Calderon de la Barca (1600-1681) and, especially, in its review as a contemporary classic in the history of European theater. To do it, the study pays particular attention to Ruiz Ramon’s biographical and academic circumstances and the critical currents that inspired its «Calderon reading» model, which contributed decisively in the renewal of Golden Age Theather historiography

Ocena wiarygodności internetowych serwisów wybranych polskich wyższych uczelni niepublicznych

2019

Celem artykułu jest dokonanie i przedstawienie oceny wiarygodności internetowych serwisów wybranych polskich wyższych uczelni niepublicznych. Koncepcja, metody badań: Sięgając do definicji terminów związanych z pojęciem wiarygodność odniesiono je do serwisów internetowych. Na tej podstawie stworzono konceptualne ramy oceny wiarygodności dla takich serwisów. Ramy te posłużyły do oceny wiarygodności internetowych serwisów wybranych wyższych uczelni niepublicznych w Polsce z wykorzystaniem metody sondażowej i oryginalnego narzędzia. Ranking wiarygodności badanych serwisów internetowych utworzono wykorzystując metodę TOPSIS. Wyniki i wnioski: W artykule pokazano, że zestaw cech i kryteriów używ…
