Photocatalytic oxidation of trans-ferulic acid to vanillin on TiO2 and WO3-loaded TiO2 catalysts

2015

Abstract The photocatalytic oxidation of trans-ferulic acid to vanillin in water has been studied by using various TiO2 and WO3-loaded TiO2 samples as catalysts. Different values of selectivity were obtained depending on the physico-chemical properties of the single samples and a vanillin selectivity of 10% was reached in the presence of the commercial TiO2 Merck. Higher selectivity values were obtained by impregnation of TiO2 with H2WO4 followed by calcination. The increased production of vanillin exhibited by the obtained WO3-loaded TiO2 powders was attributed to a reduced further oxidation of the aldehyde caused by the presence of the practically inactive tungsten trioxide hydrate on the…

Investigation of Multicomponent Sorption in Polymers from Fluid Mixtures at Supercritical Conditions:  The Case of the Carbon Dioxide/Vinylidenefluor…

2008

The simultaneous sorption of carbon dioxide and vinylidene fluoride (VDF) in poly(vinylidenefluoride) from their supercritical (sc) mixtures was studied using an experimental method, already described in a previous publication, based on the gas-chromatographic determination of the equilibrium composition of the fluid phase in contact with the polymer. Argon was added to the system as a nonabsorbable molecular probe in the polymer to take into account the effect of the volume swelling on the measurement. Sorption behavior has been studied at 50 °C by changing the composition and the density of the supercritical phase. We have found that VDF dissolves in its polymer with concentrations much l…

No-Flow Temperature in Injection Molding Simulation

2010

Most injection molding simulation packages use the no-flow temperature (NFT) as a means of determining whether the polymer flows or is solid. The NFT is not well defined, and a standard method for measuring it does not exist. A sensitivity analysis of the filling stage has been carried out with two different packages [VISI Flow (Vero Software Limited, Gloucestershire, UK) and Moldflow (Autodesk, Inc., San Rafael, CA)] to estimate the influence of the NFT on the main processing parameters. The NFT has a large influence on the thickness of the frozen layer, but it does not appreciably affect the filling pressure. Because the NFT affects the frozen layer, an effect on the estimation of shrinka…

Gamma radiation of EVA-AA/MMA swollen systems to obtain mechanically improved blends

2002

In this work a "new" way to obtain "compatibilised" blends of rubber-glassy thermoplastic components is presented. Polyethylen-vinyl acetate acrylic acid terpolymer is swollen by methylmetacrylate and the system is irradiated through gamma rays in order to induce polymerisation of the monomer. Solubility and dynamic mechanical tests indicate the formation of a two phase system, even though in presence of strong interactions between the two components. Mechanical tensile behaviour is that of a ductile material with appreciable modulus values.

Thermal properties of e-beam cured epoxy/thermoplastic matrices for advanced composite materials

2007

The aim of this work is to investigate the possibility to improve the thermal behaviour of epoxy based systems, cured by ionizing radiation, in order to produce matrices for advanced carbon fibres composites. Blends of two epoxy monomers, difunctional and trifunctional, have been polymerized by e-beam irradiation and the dynamic mechanical thermal properties have been investigated. The increase of the concentration of the trifunctional epoxy monomer in the blend causes a marked increase of the Tg, but strongly decreases the reactivity. Subsequently, blends of the same epoxy monomers with a high Tg thermoplastic toughening agent have been considered and their reactivity and the thermal prope…

Ion transport through membranes: A computer experiment

1983

Abstract Gramicidin-A is a linear pentadecapeptide antibiotic, which forms transmembrane channels; these have a number of interesting conductance characteristics [1, 2 and Refs. therein], as for example high specific ion fluxes (a single channel carries about 10 7 sodium ions/sec at 25 °C, 1 M NaCl and 100 mV transmembrane d.d.p.) have a remarkable ion selectivity among the monovalent cations. The permeability ratios with respect to sodium were found to be in following order H + (150) > NH 4 + (8.9) > Cs + (5.8) > Rb + (5.5) > K + (3.9) > Na + (1.0) > Li + (0.33). The channel is impermeable to anions and to divalent cations and it exhibits saturation and maxima in conductance as a function …

Solid State NMR Structure Analysis of the Antimicrobial Peptide Gramicidin S in Lipid Membranes: Concentration-Dependent Re-alignment and Self-Assemb…

2008

Antimicrobial peptides can kill bacteria by permeabilizing their cell membrane, as these amphiphilicmolecules interact favourably with lipid bilayers. This mechanism of action is attributed eitherto the formation of a peptide “carpet” on the membrane surface, or to a transmembranepore. However, the structure of such a pore has not yet been resolved under relevant conditions.Gramicidin S is a symmetrical cyclic β-sheet decapeptide, which has been previouslyshown by solid state NMR to lie flat on the membrane surface at low peptide:lipid ratios (≤ 1:80).Using highly sensitive 19F-NMR, supported by 15N-labelling,we found that gramicidin S can flip into an upright transmembrane alignment at hig…

Membrane Lipid-Polypeptide Molecular Associations in Non Aqueous Solvent. Effect of Phosphatidylcholine Concentration and Temperature and their Influ…

1986

Abstract The use of an Ultrastyragel 500 A column for the study of interactions between phosphatidylcholine and gramicidin A in tetra-hydrofuran is described. Analysis of vacant peak has allowed to establish the influence that eluent lipid composition, concentration of injected gramicidin and temperature have on the interaction. At 20[ddot] C, for the assayed phospholipid concentration range (0.04 to 0.14 %, w/v), the lipid/polypeptide molar binding ratio, BR, varies from 1.3 to 6.9. An increase in temperature from 20 to 40[ddot] C causes a decrease in BR of about 20 %. On the other hand, the interaction releases some of the water bound to the lipid polar head, suggesting that the binding i…

New Porphyrin/Fe-Loaded TiO2 Composites as Heterogeneous Photo-Fenton Catalysts for the Efficient Degradation of 4-Nitrophenol

2013

A new class of porphyrin(Pp)/Fe co-loaded TiO2 composites opportunely prepared by impregnation of [5,10,15,20-tetra(4-tert-butylphenyl)] porphyrin (H2Pp) or Cu(II)[5,10,15,20-tetra(4-tert-butylphenyl)] porphyrin (CuPp) onto Fe-loaded TiO2 particles showed high activities by carrying out the degradation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) as probe reaction in aqueous suspension under heterogeneous photo-Fenton-like reactions by using UV-visible light. The combination of porphyrin-Fe-TiO2 in the presence of H2O2 showed to be more efficient than the simple bare TiO2 or Fe-TiO2.
