kLa MEASUREMENT IN BIOREACTORS
2010
For accurately measuring kLa in bioreactors the dynamic pressure method (DPM) was introduced by Linek et al. (1993). In this work a simplified version of the same method is discussed. With respect to the original DPM, the simplified version greatly simplifies data treatment. In fact final constant slope observable in the usual semi-log diagram of residual driving force versus time may be simply corrected to obtain the real kLa value with negligible inaccuracy. Experimental data obtained on a lab-size stirred tank reactor confirm all model predictions, including the feature that the adoption of large pressure changes may lead to a better accuracy.
Vortex shape in unbaffled stirred vessels: experimental study via digital image analysis
2011
There is a growing interest in using unbaffled stirred tanks for addressing certain processing needs. In this work, digital image analysis coupled with a suitable shadowgraphy-based technique is used to investigate the shape of the free-surface vortex that forms in uncovered unbaffled stirred tanks. The technique is based on back-lighting the vessel and suitably averaging vortex shape over time. Impeller clearance from vessel bottom and tank filling level are varied to investigate their influence on vortex shape. A correlation is finally proposed to fully describe vortex shape also when the vortex encompasses the impeller.
EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF DILUTE SOLID-LIQUID SUSPENSION IN AN UNBAFFLED STIRRED VESSELS BY A NOVEL PULSED LASER BASED IMAGE ANALYSIS TECHNIQUE
2009
The availability of experimental information on solid distribution inside stirred tanks is a topic of great importance in several industrial applications. The measurement of solid particle distribution in turbulent multiphase flow is not simple and the development of suitable measurement techniques is still in progress. In this work a novel non-intrusive technique for measuring particle concentration fields in solid-liquid systems is employed. The technique makes use of a laser sheet, a high sensitivity digital camera for image acquisition and a Matlab procedure for post-processing the acquired images. Experimental data are here obtained for the case of an unbaffled stirred tank. Stable tor…
Vacuum air-lift bioreactor for microalgae production
2017
Microalgae production is receiving an increasing interest both by research institutions and commercial companies (Di Caprio et al., 2016). This is due to the growing consciousness of the need to move towards renewable, sustainable feedstoks for commodities production (Wang et al., 2012). However, process development at industrial scale, either based on open or closed photobioreactors, still is in a rather early stage and there is room for further development (Morweiser et al., 2010), especially aimed at reducing process costs. In this work an innovative low-cost technology for microalgae production, currently under development at Palermo University, is described. The main ways through which…
Valorization of waste solvents through supercritical water gasification
2017
The supercritical water gasification of various organic species belonging to the groups of organic acids, aldehydes, ketones, alcohols and phenols, has been studied as a possible waste disposal method for polluted water stream produced in industries and laboratories. Gasification has been investigated using a 200 cm3 down flow reactor working continuously at 24 MPa and 660 °C. Supercritical water gasification (SCWG) is effective for the syngas production at very high conversion rate for all the species investigates, but phenol. Phenol, when mixed with other species, has an inhibitory effect of the radical chain gasification mechanism that dramatically reduced the gasification performance. …
Kefiran-based Scaffolds For Biomedical Applications
2018
Kefiran is an exopolysaccharide produced by microorganisms present in kefir grains, with several health promoting properties. A optimized protocol was developed for the separation of kefiran from kefir grains, allowing to reach a yield 4÷5 % without using toxic or expensive chemicals. The capability of kefiran to produce scaffold via Thermally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS) technique was investigated and porous scaffolds structure was obtained. Separated kefiran and scaffolds were analyzed via DSC and different thermal properties between purified kefiran and scaffold were revealed. XRD analysis revealed different structure between kefiran and scaffolds. The porous scaffold structure can be…
Hot water injection in relation to 1982-84 microseismic events at Campi Flegrei Caldera by thermo-hydro-mechanical simulation
2020
The repeated deformations and seismic unrests at Campi Flegrei caldera (southern Italy) have been identified due to a fluid injection source in volcano active area. We investigated the role of hot water injection in the seismic unrests of 1982-1984 with a view to gaining insights into the caldera’s dynamics, by applying coupled TOUGHREACT-FLAC3D simulator to our computational domain of 10 × 1 × 3 km with a single-phase steam isothermal (HM) and non-isothermal (THM) simulations comparison. The results indicated that the overlying caprock blocks the uprising hot water injection, leading to the building up of pore pressure and shear stress underneath over time. This process substantially modif…
Are Toll-like receptors and decoy receptors involved in the immunopathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus and lupus-like syndromes?
2011
In this paper we focus our attention on the role of two families of receptors, Toll-like receptors (TLR) and decoy receptors (DcR) involved in the generation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and lupus-like syndromes in human and mouse models. To date, these molecules were described in several autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, antiphospholipids syndrome, bowel inflammation, and SLE. Here, we summarize the findings of recent investigations on TLR and DcR and their role in the immunopathogenesis of the SLE.
2015
The feminization of migrations, especially in the Mediterranean countries of Europe, is associated with new forms of exploitation of migrant labor. This article aims to analyze from this point of view the market of domestic and care work of migrant women in the homes of Italian families, placing it in relation to the deficiencies of national social policies. The analysis of this phenomenon in the Italian context - developed with the support of a series of interviews with migrant workers - reveals about these women and their families of origin the violation of certain fundamental human rights : primarily the right to the family unity, bound by the rules of family reunification, by the cohabi…
