[Cytomegalovirus infection in immunocompetent patients. Clinical and immunological considerations].

Cytomegalovirus primary infection is considered dangerous for some kinds of patients: immunocompromised (HIV-infected and transplanted patients), newborns with congenital infection, and immunocompetent patients in critical condition. CMV infection is usually asymptomatic or only mildly symptomatic in immunocompetent hosts. We collected all cases of acute CMV infection that came to our attention during the period November 2009 - May 2011 to analyze their clinical features. Immunoenzymatic methods (ELISA) were used for the detection of specific IgM and IgG antibodies in every case. We observed 73 cases of acute CMV infection. The male-female ratio was 1.5/1. [Background]: Functional connectivity alterations in the lateral and medial hypothalamic networks have been associated with the development and maintenance of obesity, but the possible impact on the structural properties of these networks remains largely unexplored. Also, obesity-related gut dysbiosis may delineate specific hypothalamic alterations within obese conditions. Inhibition of glial proliferation in vitro by serum from patients with multiple sclerosis

Primary cell cultures from fetal rat CNS have been employed to evaluate the effects caused by the addition of serum from patients affected by multiple sclerosis (MS). MS-serum supplemented media caused a decrease in [3H]-thymidine incorporation into the cultures, thus indicating an inhibitory effect on proliferating glial cells. Sera from patients in remission stage of the disease showed an inhibitory effect not significatively lower than those from patients in acute stage. These results suggest that glial cells may be a target of circulating factors present in MS.

The epidemiology of mumps in Italy.

In Italy, although vaccination has been recommended for a number of years, vaccination coverage for mumps is still sub-optimal. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the seroprevalence of mumps antibodies in the Italian population, stratified by age, gender and geographical area. The proportion of individuals positive for mumps antibodies remained stable in the age classes 0–11 months and 1 year (25.4% and 30.8%, respectively) and showed a continuous increase after the second year of life.
