Solid state conformational behavior and interactions of a series of aromatic oligoamide foldamers

2016

The topic of this thesis is aromatic oligoamide foldamers. The literary review of the thesis discusses the general features of foldamers and their design and then focuses on the specific examples of aromatic oligoamide foldamers. The experimental part of the thesis discusses the design and preparation of a family of aromatic oligoamide foldamers that can adopt a helical conformation. The folding is directed by intramolecular hydrogen bonding and stabilized by intramolecular aromatic interactions. The focus of the thesis is the analysis of the solid state conformations of ten foldamer analogues. The analysis is based on forty different crystal structures which are determined using single cry…

Boosting Long-Term Stability of Pure Formamidinium Perovskite Solar Cells by Ambient Air Additive Assisted Fabrication

2021

Due to the high industrial interest for perovskite-based photovoltaic devices, there is an urgent need to fabricate them under ambient atmosphere, not limited to low relative humidity (RH) conditions. The formamidinium lead iodide (FAPI) perovskite α-black phase is not stable at room temperature and is challenging to stabilize in an ambient environment. In this work, we show that pure FAPI perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have a dramatic increase of device long-term stability when prepared under ambient air compared to FAPI PSCs made under nitrogen, both fabricated with N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP). The T80 parameter, the time in which the efficiency drops to 80% of the initial value, increases f…

Staphylococcus epidermidis biofilmu veidošana un rezistences pret meticilīnu noteikšana, lietojot fenotipiskās un molekulāri bioloģiskās izmeklēšanas…

2018

ChemInform Abstract: One-Step Synthesis, Crystallographic Studies and Antimicrobial Activity of New 4-Diazopyrazole Derivatives.

2010

Summary A number of new 4-diazopyrazole derivatives were prepared by the reaction of 1- R -3-methyl-5(R 1 -substituted)benzamidopyrazoles with a sevenfold excess of nitrous acid in acetic medium. The compounds were tested for activity against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus faecalis, Listeria monocytogenes, Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis and Paecilomyces varioti . The highest microbial susceptibility was shown by Gram-positive bacteria, with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) in the range 0.5–12.5 μg/mL. For S aureus the R 1 substituents were screened utilizing the Topliss operational scheme. The 4-nitro g…

Photoinduced DNA Lesions in Dormant Bacteria. The Peculiar Route Leading to Spore Photoproduct Unraveled by Multiscale Molecular Dynamics

2020

Some bacterial species enter a dormant state in the form of spores to resist to unfavorable external conditions. Spores are resistant to a wide series of stress agents, including UV radiation, and can last for tens to hundreds of years. Due to the suspension of biological functions such as DNA repair, they accumulate DNA damage upon exposure to UV radiation. Differently from active organisms, the most common DNA photoproduct in spores are not cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers, but rather the so-called spore photoproduct. This non-canonical photochemistry results from the dry state of DNA and the binding to small acid soluble proteins that drastically modify the structure and photoreactivity of …

Staphylococcus prevails in the skin microbiota of long-term immunodeficient mice

2012

Summary Host-commensal relationships in the skin are a complex system governed by variables related to the host, the bacteria and the environment. A disruption of this system may lead to new steady states, which, in turn, may lead to disease. We have studied one such disruption by characterizing the skin micro- biota in healthy and immunodepressed (ID) mice. A detailed anatomopathological study failed to reveal any difference between the skin of healthy and ID mice. We sequenced the 16S rDNA V1-V2 gene region to saturation in 10 healthy and 10 ID 8 week- old mice, and found than all of the healthy and two of the ID mice had bacterial communities that were similar in composition to that of h…

Frame fungi on insulated windows.

1985

Insulated windows (fixed triple glass window elements), became common in Finland during and after the energy crisis. Moisture tends to condense along the edges causing mold growth on the frames. Nine houses with insulated glass windows and eight with other types of window were studied. Fungus samples were taken from the window edges and from the inside air and cultivated on malt extract agar. In five of the houses with insulated windows there was visible mold growth on the window edges. The predominant fungus was Aureobasidium pullulans. With other types of windows there was only one case of visible mold. The concentrations of fungi were about the same in the air of houses with both types o…

Pattern of polyamines and related monoacetyl derivatives in chick embryo retina during development.

1994

Polyamines and related monoacetyl derivatives were studied in chick embryo retina during development (6th-19th day). Putrescine, which is high in the first phase of retinogenesis, is necessary to sustain both tissue proliferation and via N-acetylputrescine, gamma-aminobutyric acid synthesis. A later increase in spermidine and particularly spermine may play a role in the last phase of development when the retina reaches maturation. The presence of N1-acetylspermidine already at the 8th day indicates that in chick embryo retina, putrescine synthesis can depend on two separate pathways. The first involves ornithine decarboxylase activity; the second, spermidine/spermine N1-acetyltransferase an…

Free and conjugated polyamine content in Citrus sinensis Osbeck, cultivar Brasiliano N.L.92, a Navel orange, at different maturation stages

2004

Biogenic amines, synthesized during physiological metabolic processes of all living organisms, are present in food. At low concentrations, polyamines are essential for cell renewal and growth, but they can be detrimental when consumed in high amount through the diet as they could support abnormal cell growth pathologies. The daily human diet contains more putrescine than spermidine or spermine, mostly derived from fruits. In general, orange fruits contain high levels of put, a fact that could limit their utilization in the daily diet besides the benefits contributed by their strong antioxidant properties. There is therefore an increasing interest in finding plant foods with low polyamine co…
