Typology of exogenous organic matters based on chemical and biochemical composition to predict potential nitrogen mineralization
2010
Our aim was to develop a typology predicting potential N availability of exogenous organic matters (EOMs) in soil based on their chemical characteristics. A database of 273 EOMs was constructed including analytical data of biochemical fractionation, organic C and N, and results of N mineralization during incubation of soil–EOM mixtures in controlled conditions. Multiple factor analysis and hierarchical classification were performed to gather EOMs with similar composition and N mineralization behavior. A typology was then defined using composition criteria to predict potential N mineralization. Six classes of EOM potential N mineralization in soil were defined, from high potential N minerali…
Laboratory kinetics of soil denitrification are useful to discriminate soils with potentially high levels of N2O emission on the field scale
2001

Direct C-H metalation with chromium(ii) and iron(ii): transition- metal host/benzenediide guest magnetic inverse-crown complexes
2009
Check M(etal)ate: The chessboard and the figures represent a special reaction in which different low-polarity metals can metalate arenes directly when they are brought into the right position. In a combination of queen (sodium) and knight (chromium or iron), it is possible for the knight (usually the weaker piece) to make a direct deadly hit on the king (benzene) in this game of elemental chess.
2020
Following three previous papers (van Oort et al., 2016, 2017, 2020) dealing with current soil characteristics and geochemical budgets in surface horizons, as well as the impacts of fertilization in subsurface horizons in soils of INRAE’s long term bare fallow experiment (the 42-plots trial), we now present some chronological aspects of soil evolution at the soil’s surface since 1928. For that, we analyzed several series of about 15 samples from the historical sample archive for 10 representative treatments: fertilizers with acidifying effects (ammonium sulphate, ammonium phosphate), fertilizers with dispersive effects (sodium nitrate, sylvinite, and potassium chloride), superphosphate, amen…
Experimental Crystallization of a High-K Arc Basalt: the Golden Pumice, Stromboli Volcano (Italy)
2006
International audience; The near-liquidus crystallization of a high-K basalt (PST-9 golden pumice, 49·4 wt % SiO2, 1·85 wt % K2O, 7·96 wt % MgO) from the present-day activity of Stromboli (Aeolian Islands, Italy) has been experimentally investigated between 1050 and 1175°C, at pressures from 50 to 400 MPa, for melt H2O concentrations between 1·2 and 5·5 wt % and {Delta}NNO ranging from –0·07 to +2·32. A drop-quench device was systematically used. AuPd alloys were used as containers in most cases, resulting in an average Fe loss of 13% for the 34 charges studied. Major crystallizing phases include clinopyroxene, olivine and plagioclase. Fe–Ti oxide was encountered in a few charges. Clinopyro…

Microstructures in shells of the freshwater gastropod Viviparus viviparus: a potential sensor for temperature change?
2013
Abstract Mollusk shells contain a plethora of information on past climate variability. However, only a limited toolkit is currently available to reconstruct such data from the shells. The environmental data of some proxies (e.g. Sr/Ca ratios) is obscured by physiological effects, whereas other proxies, such as δ 18 O, simultaneously provide information on two or more different environmental variables. The present study investigates whether microstructures of the freshwater gastropod Viviparus viviparus provide an alternative means to reconstruct past water temperature. Cold and highly variable temperature regimes resulted in the precipitation of highly unordered first-order lamellae of simp…
The impact of high-temperature, short-time thermal treatment on texture and weight loss of green asparagus
1997
The kinetics of the degradation of texture and loss of weight of green asparagus heated to between 100 and 130 °C was studied. The texture of the asparagus was evaluated with two types of cells fitted to a universal texturometer: one cell measured resistance to cutting with a wire and the other was a Kramer cell. The two methods enabled distinction between the different thermal treatments, although the Kramer cell gave information about the behaviour of parts of the spear further away from the tip. The thermally induced degradation of the texture and loss of weight followed first-order kinetics. With respect to the texture, the parameters obtained with the wire cell 2.5, 5 and 7.5 cm from t…
